I make hats for my entire family every ear for my family for Christmas. They tell me that that's all they want from me 😅. I always sell them. If you want to make a really nice hat and not bulky on the top like the one she does, follow my steps: 1. Chain 45 + 1 2. In the 2nd chain from the hook, do 1 slip stitch. Do another slip stitch in the next 5 chains. Then do 1/2 double crochets to the end of the row. You will have a total of 46 stitches. 3. Chain 1 and turn your work around. Do 40 1/2 double crochets and 6 slip stitches. - 46 stitches. 4. Chain 1 and in the back loops only repeat row 2. 5. Chain 1 and repeat row 3. Continue to the end on your desired size, repeating rowa 2 and 3. Make sure you always have the same number of stitches. NOW, WITH REGARDS TO YOUR QUESTION: 1. Lengh: most of my hats are about 11 inches long. 2. Width: my hats depends on each person's head. Some have a bigger head some smaller. Mostly it's about 22-23 inches. I recommend you when you get to the width of 22 inches to close your work, and try it on. You might need to remove a row or two, or you might need to add a little more rows. But I find that this is the best way to make the perfect hat. It goes the same for the length. I like my hat to be folded to fully cover my ears so instead if 47 stitches, I make 51. My daughter likes it shorter so I just do the 47 stitches. If you follow my directions let me know how it goes. I'll love to hear back good news 😊

You can just use Bobby pins, works the same way and saves money if you already have laying around.

You don't need the markers for hats. Not the ones simple as this! When you finish every row, make sure you chain 1, and then turn your work around. Start the next row working in the second stitch from the hook. I promise you, you will always have the same number of stitches when your done. I’ve made over 100 hats so far and my technique never got me wrong

That's for a small adult head size if it's a larger head like mine you need about 59-62 rows. It also depends on the yarn you use.

You could be missing/skipping stitches which would cause your rows to get smaller/decrease

I would suggest counting your stitches every row, you might be skipping one or two at the beginning of the row or in the middle. If you are using a dark color it may be harder to see every stitch. Your stitches will get easier to see as you figure out your tension 😁

Make sure you are chaining one before you do another row!
