you said slip stitch for the thumb but did sc. am I sliping or single crocheting ?

I personally used a proper slip stitch. The chain 2 counts as a double crochet, using the sc instead of a slip stitch would make that a chain 3 and to me would just look off. I saw what you saw though, she joins with a sc, not a slip.
