Like many on here I am a beginner (although I’ve been making beanies for probably 4 years) and your pace and style of direction is perfect! I’m working with a mandala yarn that is really tiny and almost gave up using it until I found this tutorial. My confidence has increased as I’ve worked through the video, and I’m getting to finally make something with this amazing color changing yarn. Thank you!!!

Begin your half-double crochet, and before you finish the stitch, cut the yarn and add the new color for the rest of the stitch. It's similar to changing colors in this tutorial, but it's using a single crochet. I think it will help you get the idea though... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DqdyABuR0u0.html (see the 8:00 minute mark on how to change colors). Have fun!

I'm making placemats for my dining room table with this stitch. It's beautiful, I can whip up one placemat in 2 evenings (did one a day when I was on bedrest) I do them with 65 stitches per row, starting with 67 for my foundation chain. I just love this stitch. I do use the stitch marker so I know when to change to back/both loops. But I do have to write down if I'm on back loop or both loops if I set it down for more than a few minutes. Thank you for this tutorial. I also made my dad a scarf using this. After I cut the yarn for the tassels, my dad said he didn't want tassels. It's too bad, as I have a lot of scraps of yarn lol. I am making myself a scarf with tassels, but I'm making mine a different color. Maybe I'll make another scarf with the yarn I used for my dad but with tassels and gift it to someone.

@createandcrochetwithpatricia I used both (not for the same placemats) I did a few with cotton and some with acrylic. I made green ones for st Patrick's day, red/green/white for Christmas, orange and black yarn for Halloween, pink ombre for valentine's day, etc. And some I made that just fit the color scheme of my dining room. This stitch holds up well when washed, which I'm so happy about

I chained 21 but then with the two extra chains - are we now doing 23 for every row?? Thanks. I’m having trouble counting (clearly)
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
The extra two chains are your turning chain and count as your first half-double crochet (hdc). You then do a hdc into the 3rd chain from the loop on your hook (see 3:28 in the video) and continue to do a hdc in each stitch to the end of the chain. You should have 21 stitches including the turning ch2. Hope that helps!

If you are able to order online you should look there. I prefer to shop local whenever possible, but sometimes It’s not possible. I’ve found some great variegated yarn from small shops I don’t have access to, and there is amazon as well (although I try not to use them as they take money out of the pockets of independent sellers). Just a thought. Happy crocheting!
@ninawth
@ninawth 2 года назад
@@lilburro3 Thank you for the advise! I had checked online, but I could only find it in the UK and USA. Importing that into the EU would be so incredibly expensive - multiple times the cost of the yarn itself. Amazon is not really a thing here, either, so it would still have to come from America probably (and also it's one of the most evil entities on this planet, so I wouldn't buy from there even if I could). @createandcrochetwithpatricia
I think I answered this in your previous question. The way crochet pattern work is that you have a pattern repeat. This can be just one row, or several rows. The pattern repeat creates a pattern and texture for the fabric. That pattern is then repeated several times, and not with locking it off after each repeat, which is called fastening off in crochet terminology). I hope this helps.

How do I straighten my edges Any hack?
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
If you are already well along, then blocking the scarf can help. Just search "how to block crochet" on YT and you'll find lots of tutorials. To prevent the edges from going wonky, make sure you are counting your stitches. It is easy to miss a stitch at the beginning or end of a row. Crochet tension can also be an issue, so you can check out this tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PxAVTN_T3mk.html 🙂👍

@@cristinamanian5282 You could always do a little sample and see. I haven't used velvet yarn myself, but I don't see why it would work. You could put one or two tassels in every stitch as I did in the updated version of this tutorial. Let me see if I have this correct. Row two is half double crochet in both loops, row three is a half double crochet in the first and last stitch while the ones in between are half double crochet in the back loop only, then row three is like row two, row four and five are like row three?
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 11 месяцев назад
Row two starts and ends with hdc in both loops, but with 1 hdc in the top loop of each stitch in between. Row three is 1 hdc in both loops of all the stitches (you have written it the other way around). You then repeat rows two and three until the scarf is the length you like. So row four is a repeat of row two, row five is a repeat of three, row six is a repeat of row two, row seven is a repeat of row three...and so on. The written pattern is in the description box below the video, so that may help you as well (click on see more, or more...).

@@gfitz6001 yes, the back loop is the stitch to go into, there can be some confusion because each stitch actually has 3 parts and there is a 'back bump, that is at the back of the stitch. But the two obvious stitches that are facing you are the back loop and front loop. @createandcrochetwithpatricia
@createandcrochetwithpatricia 10 месяцев назад
For sure! Use the size hook recommended for the yarn of your choice (it will say on the wrapping). You can also use a larger hook for the number 4 yarn...a 4.5mm or 5mm would be fine. It just makes the stitches bigger and looser, but that may be what you want! Crochet is very forgiving and you can change things up all the time. Try what you want and if you don't like it, just unravel and try again!

@@createandcrochetwithpatricia so I need a ball of yarn that weights 85grams
@createandcrochetwithpatricia
@@randnstars8225 ...not necessarily, I always use the length and gauge of yarn. So I would recommend approximately 260 meters of yarn in a number 4, medium weight (or worsted) yarn. The Lion Brand Ferris Wheel yarn happens to be 85 gms per ball. However, a different brand of yarn might weigh more, but not have the same length of yarn. For example, Bernat Handicrafter yarn weighs 50 gm per ball, but is only 73 meters in length. If you pro-rate that, 85 grams would only be 124 meters and that is not enough for this project.

The scarf used one full ball of the Ferris Wheel Yarn which is 85gms (3oz) and has 247 meters (270 yards) of yarn. The finished length is 152 cm (60 inches) without tassels. If you want tassels, you'd need approximately another 13 meters (14 yards). I made a matching hat, which only used about 3/4 of a ball of the same yarn, so there was enough yarn from that ball to make the tassels. :)

Here is a playlist on how to do free-form: ru-vid.com/group/PLVxSmwID02OBSOOK2rrFs8VQybZisCqJA Also, it sounds like your crochet tension is on the tight side, so going up a size in crochet hook is the perfect solution for that!

If you go to settings under the video (the little gear icon) and choose "playback speed". This allows you to slow the video down for easier viewing. Try 0.75 or 0.5 and that will really help!
