Crosswind frightens wife - Grumman Tiger single engine takeoff and landing in gusty wind conditions

The variable direction and 25 knot wind gusts made for an exciting takeoff and landing this day. Jen was a bit frightened and the turbulence created an uncofortable flight from takeoff to landing. On the first landing attempt we had to go-around because we were too high and fast on final approach. The second attempt was better and even though the winds were tossing us around like we were inside a washing machine we managed to find an opening and had a relatively mild touch-down.

Nice job Mate, I like how you let your speed build just after liftoff and you kept the centerline nicely during landing, well done Sir. My wife comes with me on some very challenging days just like yours, they make great co-pilots and I also respect their views after the flight, seems to make us better pilots in the end :)

Been there done that. I have to take over from the right seat because my friend was not sure he could land his Piper 235, so I landed the plane from the right seat. Wind 360 @ 18 gusting to 25, the runway was 270. Very interesting landing . Fly safe and God bless.

Liking the the 360 camera views.. is the work flow harder? That was choppy winds..Tigers are not fun in turbulence.

Yeah feels like the inside of a washing machine when the air is like that. The 360 has larger file sizes so records less footage before filling up the memory card but the thing I like least is I have to convert the file type before i can edit in Premiere pro. Converting the file type takes a long time.

It might be the camera angle, but it looks the flaps were not retracted during the climb out on the Go around. If that was the case, using a clean wing approach on higher wind situations might be more prudent, runway permitting.

You’re brave for taking her up on a day like that. Good job wrestling it in… did you have 10 degrees of flaps down around the pattern on that go around?

I cant remember if the flaps were fully retracted on the go around. I remember being pretty busy with the controls and dancing on the pedals so its possible I forgot about retracting the flaps. Many of those details are lost during the video editing and won't show up in the final clip

Hey, nice landing! I have three questions though: It seems like you aim for a point way behind the numbers. That shortens the runway a lot. Why not aiming for the numbers or even before? Second: isn't rotating at 55 a little bit too early in these gusty conditions? Say a gust hits you right before take-off indicating 55, you rotate and suddenly you're back at maybe below 50. The stall warning even beeped. Third question: did you have to fly or was it just for fun reasons? I mean 14G25... 😱😁 Just my 2 cents! Nontheless! Nicely landed!

There is a tower on short final when landing on this runway, so usually tend to be higher on final. On this day had 10degrees of flaps and a faster approach speed in case winds changed or if there was wind shear so close to ground. The higher speed made me overshoot the runway. I agree with you about rotating at 55, would have been better to pick up a little more speed. This plane does not have too much of a window beyond rotating speed before the nose wheel begins to shimmy at higher speeds. I think flying GA is pretty much always optional, we never really need to do it, but it's a lot of fun and a great way of exploring the North East. I cant remember exactly on this day but I think we were going somewhere nearby for lunch and ended up turning around and returning back to DXR because the turbulence was uncomfortable. I have flown before in higher wind gusts conditions but the turbulence was less and the direction variability wasn't as much. I think the changing direction of the wind/gusts made this day more challenging than other days where the wind gusts were higher but the direction was constant

Flew in gusty conditions before, but I think the big difference this day was the variable direction from the wind. On final the gusts would switch angle on you and that made it more difficult I think.

Is it possible (only you know, and this isn’t a critique) that it would be good not to share your doubts with a non pilot passenger? After you took off, when she asked about it being better on landing and you showed doubt, or “hope” but doubt it will be better. Etc. Was just thinking a passenger would maybe prefer to hear “it’s not a problem...it just requires more concentration but well within my limits” etc.? Maybe your wife has so much confidence n you it’s ok, but it seems like showing doubt, pointing out that you almost hit a bird, etc. might make her more nervous. I’m just a student pilot. My father was a pilot and I don’t think he ever shared doubt or gave the I impression that hints were iffy, though he certainly flew in tough situations. I’ve wondered myself about when I get my PPL how much to share with passenger. Sometimes on crosswind landings pilots are doing a lot of adjusting of the yoke and quickly and a non flying passenger, it could look like things are out of control and scare them, I mean if they saw a driver of a car (the only thing they have to compare with) making all kinds of quick left and right on the steering wheel they would think the driver was nuts...I don’t know if maybe smart to tell passenger it can be “normal” with many adjustments on the yoke but that I’d doesn’t mean he plane is almost out of control. I don’t know. Just a thought.

You have a good point, with another passenger I probably would self censor more of the conversation. My wife has flown many hours with me and prefers to be in the loop as much as possible. We have flown together through other more stressful situations (once had to make a precautionary landing due to loss of electrical power) so I have a good sense of how she will react. Situations like this where I know the landing will be challenging and the winds are going to bounce us around a lot while on final and close to the ground, the sight picture for the passenger could be pretty frightening. Crabbing in for landing with the nose pointed off center low to the ground can be confusing and can scare your passenger if they have no idea that is a normal part of landing in a crosswind. Telling them that you expect to be crabbed when coming in for landing and that they should not be frightened because it's normal can help with their anxiety of the unknown. Ultimately, each passenger has to be considered separately on a case by case. I would not recommend taking someone up for their first time if the weather and wind conditions are not calm/mild. You have no way of knowing how they would react and it can quickly turn into a bad day for everyone.

I went the other day on a short trip from my 1600 feet 40 feet wide grass runway...it was dead calm..then 30 min into the flight opposing the forcast the wind became gusting 25 variable... i almost shit my pants as that was the second flight after 7 month (due to aircraft in maintanace ) its a tripacer mostly fabric so really light ..there is as it is already no margine for error really on my strip

Wow! That's crazy. Did you return back to the grass strip Or divert to a larger runway nearby? I would think you need to maintain more airspeed on approach to counter the wind gusts but that could also cause you to float which can become a problem on a short strip

@@ArtMJenB yes I returned ... the tripacer does not really float ..I took it as an advantage but it was crazy..I did not know where to counteract the wind drift first..I had a hard touch down cose I let her drop a little fast ...what let me to the decission to get down as soon as possible was the turbulent air ..I hit 4 times in a row the ceiling with the head...I just wanted to get down...
