On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Crowded House reaching #2 in the American charts, I’d like to post this video of us performing individually from home a version of Don’t Dream It's Over. We recorded it over a few hours between continents day before yesterday. It was for the "Music From The Front Line" benefit concert in Australia / NZ. I really like the way it sounds and the process of flying tapes back and forth was fun… pure and simple… hope you enjoy too. ~ Neil

This song could be played through a tin can and a string and it would still sound fresher than any song today. 80s masterpiece.

This is one of the world's greatest popular songs, ever!! It's so complete, it lacks nothings: great musicality, rhythm, lyrics, instrumentation, emotion, recording. I never get tired of it. Many thanks to the House.

Nice to know there are so many of us out there who think the same. When I found this song it was when the Berlin Wall came down. It was as if was meant to address that ..yet this was 3 years prior. Many of my own friends never heard of this group then. Now it's as if it was written for today's world. Every word fits into a universal piece of the puzzle..That's genius !

Crowded House owned the airwaves in the spring of '87 with this song... I'd be honored if some fans of mid/late 80s classics would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of LIFE IN A NORTHERN TOWN by Dream Academy and IS THIS LOVE by Whitesnake on my YT channel in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Peace and everybody stay safe.

Indeed. I heard this back when it came out in St Petersburg FL and the rhythm guitar reminds me of how sunlight dances on the tips of waves and how those waves roll on by. That's the immediate image in my mind that this song brings. Two other bands that I enjoy from this time on par with Crowded House are early Aztec Camera and Echo and the Bunnymen. I consider these groups as the pinnacle of 1980s pop music.

@birdsong985

think this song is telling about how adversities in life affect a relationship. >There is freedom within, there is freedom without There is freedom within, or without a relationship. He is admitting his skepticism about the fate of the relationship. He doesn't know if his love will able to pull through the hard times. >Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup The deluge represents the adversities life throws at them, and the paper cup represents his helplessness in the outcome. (For those that don't know, a deluge is a severe flood, or influx of water) >There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost There's a lot of obstacles in this relationship, and a lot of them take a toll >But you'll never see the end of the road >While you're travelling with me He admits that the obstacles will never end >Hey now, hey now >Don't dream it's over >Hey now, hey now >When the world comes in >They come, they come >To build a wall between us >We know they won't win He's trying to comfort her. "Don't wish it's over. Don't let the world tear us apart." >Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof >My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof He suspects that life is trying to tear them apart by all the misfortune happening (Broken down car, a hole in the roof) >In the paper today tales of war and of waste >But you turn right over to the T.V. page A metaphor for how the relationship is working. He's emotionally distraught because of life's adversities, and she wants to pretend like everything is okay. Or she simply has lost interest in trying to sympathize with him. She's ignoring it, nonetheless. >Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum >And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart Towards the end, the tone of the song becomes more upbeat, showing progression. At this point, he's picked himself out of depression, and wants to rebuild the relationship >Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof >Get to know the feeling of liberation and release He reflecting on the fact that only a relationship that has been to the brink of collapse can truly know liberation and release from unsatisfied love. >Don't let them win A final plea for her their love to survive adversity.

This means as much to me as it did at the beginning of the covid-19 outbreak. It will forever be etched in my mind. We were all scared to death. we didn't know what to expect. Crowded House put this out and it was new, during covid, and it's perfect. It gave me hope at the very beginning of the pandemic. It helped me realize the possibilities. I didn't see a lot of other bands jump in this quick but more importantly this song is comforting. Ten months in and this is still my most comforting moment of covid.

Why did it take 67 years to discover Neil and his band? As a lover of music, his genius escaped me for the first 34 years after DDIO...then RU-vid brought his signature song into my life. I first heard this song in 87’. Wasn’t really paying any particular attention to the many other songs playing then but when that first strum started playing, I stopped whatever it was I was doing. I was hooked ever since. What is it about a song such as this? A random collection of notes. Just mere noise on it’s own but brilliantly put together which can conjure up memories both happy & sad. Lyrics that may mean something to one person & mean something else to another. After all these years. It never gets old. A song for the ages.
