This slide show depicts the bus scene in Croydon during the transition from conductor to one person operation.
The music is composed by Croydon's very own classical composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912)

Oh the memories!!. Every bus route I recognised as Croydon was where I grew up n went to school!!. The lack of congestion relative to today is breathtaking n a much more relaxed tempo unlike today's over populated environment.. The good old days dare I say it!!.

Great slide show - thank you! What a range of classes from Saunders-bodied, roofbox RT's to DMS's! Whilst not singing their praises (!) it is surprising how modern the DMS's still look after over fifty years.

Reminds me of a very happy time working as a conductor at Streatham Garage. I was mainly on the 118's but we worked; some 159's Saturdays, we seemed mainly to do the Kennington - Croydon section, and 59's Sunday. Old Coulsdon To West Hampstead was the longest route in LT at the time

Absolutely fantastic! Thank you so much for uploading this. I was born in 1965 and grew up in the Croydon area, i must have travelled on 90% of those routes. Great memories of Croydon how it used to be. I remember when the DM's started to arrive, but not sure what routes got them first, may well have been the 64. RM's and a few RT's still ruled on the 109 route, and the RM was king of the 159 route for as long as i can remember. I remember the 115 had been demoted to a single decker by the time i remember them, along with the 289. Shame you did not have a sighting of the infamous 130b, that thing was like a mystery tour, you never seemed to know which route it was going to take, not sure the drivers did either! Some great memories of my childhood, used to ride the bus all the time, i think we could get a day pass for the whole of London for about 40p. but then sadly the zones arrived. Thanks once again.

Fantastic photos. Never seen most of those before. Love seeing the RMs and I think an old roof top box RT on the 64, my local route when I grew up on Ballards Estate. Think it converted to DMS around Dec 1971 just after I started at Archbishop Tenisons on Park Hill. Hated the new buses....... s

I seem to remember that London Transport had to hire in open platform buses from Southend Transport, using their own L.T. drivers and conductors of course, at one time for use on the 190 bus service to Old Coulsdon due to some sort of bus shortage/problems with their own vehicles. I'm thinking this was during the 1980's. They were coloured blue and cream. Anyone else remember this? Perhaps they were used on other routes in the Croydon area aswel.

@@Littlealan1959 As a Southend Bus enthusiast and former Southend Transport Conductor I can tell you more... The buses were our 333-344 which were CJN433C-CJN444C which were Leyland PD3's with Massey Bodywork as well as 345-347 (MHJ345F-MHJ347F) which were East Lancs Bodied PD3's during 1976-1977 which were hired to LT for the sum of £36 per day. They were used on the 190 Thornton Heath-Old Coulsdon. After being hired to LT they went on to be hired to Harlow Depot of London Country to be used on the 397 route. As of today.. 336 is preserved by Mardens of Benfleet,Essex...335 is accommodation up in Scotland.. 337 was scrapped early due to a major accident...347 is a state but awaiting being rebuilt. On a personal note my family originate from Purley and my grandparents married in 1945 at Croydon Town hall and in 1975 I stayed at New Addington at my Aunt and Uncles place and can remember seeing DM's on the C1 series...

@@moleyofsouthend-on-sea8837 Featured on the front of one of the LOTS London Bus Reviews - was it 1976 ? LCBS had Fleetlines from Bournmouth at Leatherhead and acquired a load of Leyland Titan (PD2?) Trainers mostly from Ribble. Cannot think that LT got any other hires in as such, but obviously got into stock over time the Routemaster fleet of LCBS that did not get scrapped (RMC4 excepted), the BMMO OMs by Obsolete Fleet for the Sightseeing Tour. Of course the Atlanteans that mainly were at Croydon had been sold as a block to Hong Kong. Croydon also had the FRM for a while

At least to Purley, possibly further. I took it everyday to get to school from Lombard roundabout to Croydon Airport. The school was Haling Manor, across Purley Way playing fields.

@@tim_longhurst wait i don't think it was the 115 we know today, because it used to be 15A

Enviri yes, there’s no 115 around here today. This was in 70s and 80s.
