Weymouth Quay 01.09.1993. Class 37 - 37421 FAILS ON THE QUAY BRANCH!

I'm not sure how this came about or how I even came to know 37421 would attempt a transverse of the Weymouth Quay line. I got on the train at Westbury and if my camcorder date was correct, 1st September 1993 was a Wednesday.
The usual spot by B&Q as the line joins Commercial Road sees 37421 stop and wait for the British Transport Police to clear the line, then its all over as quickly as it starts. I wasn't aware of another loco waiting at Weymouth so I can only conclude they didn't want to chance a tits up total failure clogging up Weymouth's streets entirely for hours until a rescue loco could be drafted from Westbury or Bournemouth. When the smoke pours out you can also see something, maybe smoke or coolant? coming out the left hand side of the locomotive but pouring downwards? perhaps a fire control system?
If you remember what happened leave me a comment, I didn't shoot any more footage that day so it couldn't of run the line.

excellent catch 👍sadly since this video was taken they have closed it down and the track has been lifted what a waste😡 it would have made a lovely tourist attraction haven't the council got better things to do

About 8 years ago when the threat started I wrote to my MP about it, with suggestions of how it could be retained including using the former Quay Station for expansion of the theatre, like productions of The Railway Children-Live etc. A had a snooty letter back saying there were no plans and it wasn't in grave danger of being removed. I never believed the answer, and I was right. Weymouth was so backward thinking by removing a part of their heritage. The most infuriating bit was the alleged rotten sleepers on the line making it impassable by rolling stock, which turned out to be a complete falsehood as when it was lifted the whole lot was in great order and with concrete sleepers. Yes, remember this event as it bowled me out for scooping the Quay branch...in fact that's me wandering across in my leather jacket at 1m34s! It was the ECS for the Wednesdays only Weymouth Quay to Yeovil Pen Mill & return to Weymouth charter train (as such) which cost £15 from memory? The only consolation was that 37097 (or 197...forget now) was mustered to work the evening train back to Bristol with 421 dit.

Isn't the chap in hi-vis at 1:38 pulling the fire handle that sits on the fours corners of class 37/4's? Why would he be doing that, seemed to be no sign or panic of a loco fire? A mistake? Maybe though it turned on the Quay loco lighting system that Class 33/1's were fitted with?

The last one went down in 1999. If ukexpat is living abroad then what’s the traffic in Weymouth got to do with him now? Shame he needed to rant here when the quay branch operated for over 100 years and was a real feature of the Weymouth scene... unlike him!

Check the BBC today in the Dorset region, this line needs help as the council want to tear up the line, which is in almost perfect condition and of course the property people will win the day unless people get this shared and opposed by public protest.

This train ran for 6-8 Wednesdays through the summer of 1993; this was 1/9/93 as I was probably stood next to you!

3:03 did another engine pull the train back (if so, what class), or could the class 37 go in reverse! At least it didn't stop in the middle of the road!

Seeing this nonsense reminds me of my teenage years on Weymouth quay when this sort of chaos happened every day in the summer. It was a bloody great nuisance then and an even greater one now when more stupid idiots wish to disrupt the whole of the town centre's traffic to watch a stupid, wrongly named, "Special" train. The arrogance of the few ignorant decadent idiots is unbelievable. They are blocking one of the town's strategic roadways, they are causing delay and disruption to thousands, one day they will seriously injure or kill some unlucky soul because the emergency services can't get through. Trains are for railways not busy roads.at the height of the summer season.
