Cruella is a 2021 Disney movie that reimagines the history of 101 Dalmatians main villain Cruella De Vil, turning her into a budding fashion designer growing up during the 1970s London fashion scene. The movie tried to tap into traditional cinema tropes about the fashion industry, young ingenue has talent, gains favor with established fashion designer, and then decides to get revenge when wronged. I won't say the movie plot nor costumes were revolutionary, but they were a pretty interesting walk through 20th century British fashion history, which I personally loved. Cruella is meant to represent punk aesthetics, alla Vivienne Westwood, while her nemesis the Baroness Von Hellman represents the fashion establishment, like Christian Dior & Chanel. The movie is full of references to Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Charles James, John Galliano, Thierry Mugler and more but does that make it a good fashion film?

which considering this is cruella kinda works for me. we know how her future ends, she becomes the biggest designer & loses her mind wanting a dalmation coat. the punk looks and "i am woman hear me roar" set up her delusion. she thinks she's a rebel, but she's not, & she ends up the villain in the end. that's just me though

I understand she's Cruella and Cruella equals fur but I think it made perfect sense there wasn't any. The plot sets up her descent into villainary, to the point where she disregards morals for fashion. This is a gradual process not immediate and we see hints towards this in the film

@@strifecloud6930 ... What? No they didn't? I mean sure, trauma can happen to anyone, doesn't mean that the story set it up, which was my point from the beginning. You are trying to address both points not realizing that in doing so you are contradicting the other. You can't say something can change her personality from this movie to the next one (that would make something like skinning puppies realistic to this character), and then say they actually did leave hints or a cliffhanger, because that actually didn't happen. There's nothing in this movie that suggests she is going to become the Cruella of the previous live actions or even the one from the animated movie, period.

I appreciate that pushback on Liberty being "the most fashionable" store in 70's London. My mother always dressed me in Biba, as a little girl. I may well have been the best-dressed kid in the entire 70's, and photographic evidence backs me up. There's no way any Liberty-outfitted child could have competed with Biba-clad me. The fact that she didn’t wear a fur bothered me. Like that’s what was most impactful about her! I remember watching the original Disney movie cartoon and she had this gigantic coat that almost looked like a mane, it made her look so creepy cause combined with her posture it made her look almost animal like. People being scared of her sending a bad message by wearing fur… she’s literally a villain? Her name is Cruella ffs, why in hell would she be sending a good message? The whole animal rights issue could have been easily solved with synthetic fur. We see guns in movies all the time, I don’t like them I won’t buy one and the ones they use in the movie are fake why can’t the same basic logic be applied with fur as well
@zoeeallyyson

i actually think her not wearing fur was a good addition in way? like i think this was cruella's backstory of how she became how she was and in the animated film she tries to take roger and anita's dogs specifically so i think introducing her without it allowed her characterization to be better and maybe in a sequel she could become darker and don it. does that make sense?

@SweetJeopardy
@SweetJeopardy Год назад
@@poonywooon Exactly! Not only is it fiction, but fantasy at that. The movie presented a surreal version of a time and a place, it by no means attempts to be considered anything close to a period piece nor do the same constraints apply. Cruella isn't like "Marie Antoinette" and those Converse sneakers (or the entire wardrobe choices in "Little Women" ) and neither should its fashion analysis since world-building operates under a different set of rules for its creative choices. Spoilers: In my opinion they did cruella dirty just like Maleficent. She is supposed to be a villain not an antihero. They just kept throwing in stuff like her mum dying and her real mom wanting to kill her to make her likable and explaining why she's evil and so made her too relatable. On top of that her acting evil just was cringey because you know the movie isn’t on the side of being evil. This is why Disney sucks at making villain movies, they’re so used to making good guy/girl movies that they fail the villain movies.
@lol-ot4pn
@lol-ot4pn 3 года назад
They dont suck at making villain movies. Its just not what people “prefer” nor is it what THEY want to make. The main reason shes evil is because she has blood of someone “evil”. Not because her mother died and her real mother wanting to kill her. At the end of the movie no one with a half decent brain thinks cruella is someone nice and good and relatable. “Antihero” is and always will be a better route when making a good story about someone who mostly has a “negative” personality. Because villainy like serial killers, psychopaths, animal cruelty made for the sake of villainy is boring storytelling wise.

For anyone who may be confused as to why she didn't wear any fur.....The movie is supposed to be Cruella in her younger days, before She was the evil Ms. De Vil. She doesn't develop her obsession with fur until she's much older. Also, they end the movie with a cliff hanger, if they are planning on making a 2d one I think that's when they will show Her passion for "The ultimate fur coat!" I hope that makes sense, stay safe everyone :)

The "moth dress" inside of the vault reminded me of Alexandrr McQueen's Spring/Summer 2001 Collection- VOSS, when in the finally the four glass walls smashed onto the ground, revealing a naked Michelle Olley wearing a mask with moths all over her body.

Could you also discuss the 90’s Cruella fashions? I think camp was more of the aesthetic for those? Are there also fashion nods/ influences that came into the imagining of those looks? I love your videos and it’s always fascinating to hear from you the underlying references, nods and inspirations that helped shape the fashion you are discussing. And, yes, that last Cruella look is to die for🤯

A trapeze dress with a bias cut does mimic an A-line (and is comfortable while still maintaining a tailored look, it’s my favorite summer office go to with a blazer thrown on to push it further towards business and away from casual), but the Baroness should know there is a difference between the two of she’s claiming to be a classically educated fashion designer. I do have designer friends who wouldn’t know the difference between a trapeze cut and an a-line, but they’re self taught and it’s not like a lot of the fashion terminology for cuts and styles is part of the normal high school coursework.
@MintyAndee
@MintyAndee 3 года назад
An a-line can have a minimal waist in the cut while a trapeze will just go straight from the shoulders and tends to have a more voluminous skirt. A-lines can lean on tailoring to give it shape while a trapeze cut leans on fabric type or manipulation to give it shape (jersey and bias cuts being particularly dominant). I think you could argue a trapeze cut is a type of a-line, but not all a-lines are trapeze cuts.

When I watched the movie, I gathered that the moth scene was a nod to Mcqueen's Spring/Summer 2001 Voss show. With the vault door dropping to reveal the Mcqueen-style dress and the moths flying out while the audience was kept waiting all called back to that stunning show. Although it's obvious they didn't make this movie for fashion-lovers, I still got adore all the nods they managed to slip in!

My favorite costume was the ‘Garbage’ dress. Jenny said it was supposed to be a dress made from the Baroness’s past collections with news papers focusing on Cruella upstaging the Baroness. This was to say that the Baroness was garbage and yesterday’s news. I’m not a fashion history buff, I barely passed my Survey of Historic Costume class in college. I enjoy more the creativity and work of making wearable art. I do view clothing more as art than functional and I love how this movie highlights that. “I consider normal the cruelest insult.” Is one of the best lines in the film.

And miss thing wears ALL KINDS of furs, just to get that point across that she IS the villain, and makes it looks good. I swear it is like McQueen had a fucking field day, and it gags me everytime😍😍💕 And what's better, Ms.Close was CONTRACTUALLY allowed to keep every single outfit.
