A splendid video, as always! It's indeed quite annoying to speak of Finland when there was no Finland, or it was just a tiny fraction of the land southwest (now called Finland Proper). Having watched a whole bunch of history videos over the years and written dozens of comments, it's bothersome, to say the least. It gets old to always write something along the lines of "the area now called Finland". Thus I won't blame you for taking the shortcut. It doesn't even cause any misunderstandings, after all.

It's true of all nations. There was a time when no borders existed. Most countries have changed names & all have changed who lived there, at some time or times. I wish people would just understand this. It IS tedious to explain that of course we know too & are just using a place name that indicates an area. 😂

Thank you, Antti! I am laerning so much I didn't know I could learn, like Tapio drawn as a tree. I was raised with animism, but when I had tried to look this up in English as a kid, there was nothing available on even Ukko. And what sources there were for history were from a Swedish or soviet viewpoint, not Finnish. I am finding meanings for symbols my grandma could only say were protective or good luck, but not their names, or tell me why. And I am grateful to nearby cultures for putting up sources that led me to find this but this is what rings true to me. I have found a couple of things that i just always felt but hadnt been taught outright, or pucked up from grandma but didn't know were cultural or didn't know had Finnic terms, like väki & haltija.

My Grandma Saari (who had a BornAgainPagan bumper sticker on her truck my whole childhood) was first generation Finnish-American. She was my closest family member. Her parents and her dads brother invaded Michigan. Then after they had 8 living kids they move to California around 1950. But, they moved to Quincy where there is still plenty of snow, fir and pine so they could be loggers. I'm only 25% Finnish but that's the most out of the 10 other "nationalities" I'm told I'm a mutt of. I was raise more over with the redwoods and ocean. But, I would go visit my more Finnish family as a kid. We even went ice fishing New Years day 1999. Wake up when it's dark and go hangout on a frozen lake. I don't know, it seemed sorta Finnish. Laumojen hallitsemistahan tuo on. Tuohon on yksinkertainen vastaus. Jumala ei hyväksy mitään murhaa. Jumala antoi ihmiselle vapaan tahdon, jotta ihminen voisi olla oma yksilö, harjoittaa moraalia sekä lähestyä Jumalaa omasta tahdostaan. Ihmisen pahuus on vapaan tahdon hinta.
@ollikoskiniemi6221
@ollikoskiniemi6221 10 месяцев назад

we often learn about how the Lithuanians are Europe's last Pagans . How ever this is not so , the eastern Finns of the Volga region = Mari , Udmurt & Mordvinia's are in fact the last standing . Half of Mari are still practicing there ancestoral faith = Chi Mari Yula , while of the other half most are syncretic practicing both religions . They still have a priesthood the Karts & practice there religion in sacred groves . The Udmurt's are largely Christian but there is a small Pagan minority .
@Anttimation

We had a band of Udmurts playing in high school and telling about their culture. It was pretty cool. Much of the studying of Finnish mythology was/is done by comparing it with that of the related peoples'. Finns (like most other Europeans for that matter) were divided between different tribes during that time, but there still existed some sort of common Finnish cultural identity already during the Merovingian period (8th century). So calling these tribes Finns is not really wrong.

@Anttimation 11 месяцев назад
Yeah. Not entirely right either but I go with it for the sake of convenience.
@vasara2385
@vasara2385 11 месяцев назад
@@Anttimation Well, all these tribes had the exact same origin anyway, and the tribal divisions happened within the area that is now Finland. Finns arrived at Finland’s southwestern coast from northern Estonia. Some stayed in southwestern Finland, some went north to Satakunta, Ostrobothnia and southern Lapland, and some went east to Tavastia and Karelia. Later during the Middle Ages, some peasants from southern Tavastia and Karelia went to the Lakeland area in eastern Finland to settle these sparsely populated areas at the request by the Swedish crown who wanted to expand the territory of the realm as a buffer against Novgorod/Russia. Later during the 1600s, there were also migrations to Ingria from the Lakeland area. This is at least how I understand it.
@Anttimation
@Anttimation 11 месяцев назад
@@vasara2385 Yes, it is the history of these ancestors of ours that this series covers. I'm not disagreeing with you at all! To add to the soup, and another why I say it's not entirely correct to say Finns in the context of Iron Age/Middle Ages is that 'Finns' is often used in the sources but sometimes refers specifically to Finns in (today's) Finland proper, sometimes to Sami/Lapps etc, who at the time didn't identify as one people although from today's POV we could (justifiably) say so.

This is a rather accurate narrative of Finnish history. The anti-church agenda makes it less professional, however. @@Anttimation You are welcome! This one is actually considered to be factual (and it was the late 10th century so I imagine a bishop of Prague would have held a significant influence). These tensions would have resulted in bringing over the Teutonic Order to these lands, which would shape the southern Baltic region politics for centuries to come. These guys were playing their own game of thrones, spreading enlightenment (terror and exploitation) to pagan Prussians and in less then 100 years pretty much entirely pacified the population and built dozens of castles throughout the area. They even launched raids against the Lithuanians who by then would have adopted Catholicism as their state religion, but the Teutonic Order knights would have considered them bad pagans nonetheless (it was a lot of fertile land though, so). The ancient Finns strongly identified with their tribe. This is evidenced by the fact that tribes would have their own specific material culture used to identify them as a member of a tribe.
