@@zahrareza6624 hey, it's gonna be okay. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, except I do have a couple of good national level activities. But I have no activities related to my major, because it's a very uncommon major and in my country there are no resources for either the major in question or even research in general. So no research either. I already applied to my top choice college, hopefully my few good activities and essays will get me in.

If this were any other kind of writing I would be set. I can argue the hell out of whatever I want. I can analyze things like nobody's business. I can create a story about someone else with amazing details and imagery. I can find just the right mix between sincerity and satire to make my essays enjoyable, yet convincing... as long as they're not about me. The second you ask me to write about myself my mind draws a blank. I end up writing about the most boring and typical experience and drastically fail at any attempt to make it sound interesting. The writing is chunky and filled with simple sentences-- as if it were written by a second grader. There's no conclusion; the only thing I’ve learned is that there’s another person I can’t trust and my mental health is much worse than I thought. That is the exact opposite of what an admissions officer wants to hear.

Your tip #8 - the "be yourself" one? - THAT. But.....quirky and individual self, not creepy self. Let's say I have a student who wrote two essays on the same prompt (one of those... write about something that's important to you sort of prompts). The first is about his passionate attachment to his first laptop and how, even though he had better, faster, more accomplished computers since then, he'd earned the money for that first one, and it was kind of symbolic for him. That's kind of quirky, and the essay showcases his goal-setting and persistence. Cool. The second version is about how much he values his time alone in his room at night with the door locked and no one to see him. The first is quirky and individual. The second is heading over into creepy territory. I've had clients want to write essays about a LOT of crazy things - and sometimes the idea is cool, but sometimes the idea is just gross. It's important to know the difference.

Actually, it isn't. However, in this instance, I'm not functioning in an official capacity. I'm not even functioning under the name I use for my day job. If you can't tell the difference between casual usage and formal usage, I recommend a remedial grammar course.

Mention all of that except that you were diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. I'm not trying to be ableist, I myself have PTSD and anxiety. But afaik colleges are kinda iffy about accepting students with mental health issues, so I'm not writing about those either. I did however mention the things that CAUSED them, so you can write that you went through a lot of stress. Just try not to turn it into a sob story, and keep it more about your reflections and experiences and less about the diagnosis. Once you get accepted though, you should probably let them know that you have PTSD and anxiety so they'll make suitable arrangements for you if you need any help.

Good thing I was diagnosed with a chronic illness. This is what I was thinking of writing about how does it sound? During the course of high school, my house was robbed twice. The robbers were part of a Chilean gang and both times broke in through ripping off and climbing through my bedroom window. My family lost a lot during the robbery however the thing we really cared about losing was our feeling of safety. Before the robbery I was greedy I wanted everything; I wanted the newest; I wanted the best. However, because of the robbery I learned how little material items mattered and focused on the people in my life, my relationships, and valuing the things I do have and starting a journey towards minimalism. I went on to interview members of the gang who robbed me and hear their stories and what had led them to a life of crime. This further made me focus on how grateful I was for what I had rather than to care about what I did not have.

Tips for transfer students?? I prepared for the freshman essay, and then decided use my dual-enrolled credit to get an AS, and started my transfer application. That was when I realized how different the transfer app really is, and how bad the essay prompt is. Is there any good way to answer this question without ignoring the prompt? I feel that "why you want to transfer" is typically answered with negativity or a description of past experiences, neither which sound like essays that would admit students to college. Thanks!

My friend read my essay and she said that it was too philosophical. However, that’s the way I express who I am and how I view the world. Without those ideas I feel as if the essay would be too cliche. Is suggesting “philosophical thought” or rather a new perspective a good or bad thing?

I know it's too late, but my advice is to sound accessible and not dramatic to the reader. Express your thoughts in the simpler way otherwise the reader can't be relatable to whatever you want to tell

I had that problem when I was applying for UWC, my essay sounded too philosophical and vague, so I think it could seem insincere. Imagine you are writer. If you tell things in your book that your readers can't relate to, they will not understand you much

How would you feel about achievement as a navy female breaking the odds and because one of the top sailors? Also everywhere I’ve read talks about having letter of recommendations from teachers. I’ve been out of school for two years, it’ll be six when I go back. Would letters of recommendations from Admirals and Captions be the same affect or would they be even better?

Already wrote my essay. Sucks that the limit is only 650 words. I was at 980 words when i realized that and had to proofread my essay multiple times just to have it meet the 650 threshold and still make grammatical sense, and retain certain key details despite the low word limit. 1000 words should be the max.

Alice no i think it’s best to leave yourself vulnerable unless you’re saying something you’re doing that’s alarming to your health (suicide, self harming etc) im sure it is kept confidential

Don’t write anything too serious. My friend wrote about his experience of parental abuse he went through. However, the teacher advised him to shy away from those topics because it can make the reader feel uncomfortable. I mean it is you own experience that might’ve helped you but I don’t think a lot of people would like to read about something like that.

I also wrote about my younger self and how it shaped me into wanting to major in psychology so honestly to say it’s not to much information as long as you word everything in a way that will explain/lead up to the reason of why you chose such major. Another way of thinking about it would be to show them the type of changes in your life that lead you to this path. ;)

My biggest question is is it ok to write about a huge flaw that I had that literally prevented me from being able to appreciate other people and how I managed to grow out of it? I had a huge attitude and ego problem and only really managed to get rid of it a few years ago lol I was just doubtful because it’s a flaw...but the qualities I gained from slowly coming out are really important and lasting I think

I believe it is ok. No one's perfect, not even the admissions person reading your essay. In fact, one of the supplement essay prompts for one of the schools I'm applying to says to write about a time you failed. Your idea sounds really interesting, so go for it.

“The Kath Path” edits essays and she is also studying at Stanford University. Although, she isn’t exactly a tutor. She has some great tips and advice for students applying to college. About the fee, she charges depending on how much editing your essays need. I hope she can help you.

Hello! The topics can be found by punching in "common app essay topics" into google, and it should be the first thing that pops up. Pick one of the seven topics and get writing :) I believe the max amount of words is about 650, but you'll have to double check that

I hear that many immigrants or those from immigrant families, such as myself, use that as a topic. Its totally cool to write about that but I would try to be original and unique. Theres a bunch of good examples online.
