Cheers for the upload - received me Colombia today. For the Nanopresso + Barista kit - took it to the finest setting, than clicked back 8 turns (8 being considered lucky here in China), weighed out 15g of my go-to High Altitude beans (45 seconds - first use) which just about fitted in the double basket. Nice flow and pressure - and considering I give my local Chinese coffee shop the exact same beans - the closest I've achieved to achieving the save quality for flavour and texture as the Barista there does. Impressive

@@GadgetViper My Chinese bought grinder was actually not bad with consistency - but 15g took just under 2 minutes. The Colombia - more even still and 38 seconds with the same beans = sat down and braced aganst me thgh to handle the increased Torque. Bought the crushgrind and put it to the test. The smell when I opened it after grinding was superb! And the taste was so rich! I owned this Haro before but was never really pleased with it for the same reasons here explained. So I switched to grounded coffee (Lavazza) for a while. Years actually. Wanted to go back to grinding beans again so I started looking for one of those expensive electric grinders as I was afraid that a hand grinder would fail me again. But luckily I came across this video which saved me lots of money. Big thanks!

Depending on coarseness they will go faster or slower, more coarse = faster. Also it's easier to turn when more coarse It doesn't make sense to compare using grind clicks which is kind of an arbitrary setting, ideally you should try to make sure grind size is about equivalent on both grinders when testing. It does seem like the Crushgrind is a better built grinder, based on adjustablillity and the more stable burr holder. Most people probably aren't going to top the grinder up to the very top anyway, since there's not enough room on the bottom anyway for all those grounds. The thicker handle is probably a good thing too.

Thanks for another interesting video, Viper. Interesting to see a Dutch company using Japanese ceramic burrs (I’m assuming they are the same Kyocera burrs that the Porlex uses, but perhaps they are a different design to facilitate faster “crushing”). Replacements are available for the Porlex burrs; I wonder whether Crushgrind will offer replacement burrs for their grinder or go the same way as Hario (no replacement part available). I thought your comparison on the hopper and grounds bin volumes was a bit confusing. I would advise against relying on the printed spec from Hario. It would have been interesting to see if you poured the same beans from the Crushgrind into the Hario how much head space was left in the latter (same for the grinds bin). I suspect the Hario Mini can fit a bit more. You were right to mention that the increased fines produced by your Hario may be due to the age of the burrs. One of the usual criticisms of ceramic conical burrs is that they generate more fines than steel burrs. I haven’t seen definitive evidence of this. I also suspect from previous studies regarding the quality of stone ground grains vs grains crushed by steel rollers that an argument can be made for the beneficial thermal properties of ceramics. Also fun to see the Crushgrind without its handle fits in the inner cylinder of the AeroPress (perhaps fully for the original AeroPress?).

Great review! Love those close-ups of the results, and you hit on all the parts of relevance to me - including whether the CrushGrind Colombia can slide into an AeroPress (which I'm happy to see it can, sans handle). So I'm very pleased you got me turned onto this device in your last video (the one presenting several products new to you), and that I already ordered two of them on blind faith. :-) The price is right, and this should be a more-than-worthy successor to my not-so-great Porlex Mini for all my backpacking and travel purposes. Why two of them? I also like to have my full coffee set-up packed and ready to go in my VW camper so I don't have to move dishes and other things back and forth a lot. Amazing how fine the CrushGrind goes, and how many gradations there are. That should make it a cinch to dial in a great espresso grind.

Hi Scott, I'm sure your going to be blown away by the grind quality, it looks as good as what comes out of my Baratza. Regarding fitting it into the Aeropress, it will go in the Aeropress Go (with the handle off) but not the regular Aeropress, the inside diameter of the plunger on the 'Go' is slightly bigger. Thanks for watching :)

I'm having difficulty with the nanopresso pump, it seems to stick quite often, I think I may have gotten a faulty unit as I've tried different coarseness on the grinds but any insights on this if you have any would be helpful. Secondly could you advise grind settings for the grind crush in relation to the nanopress to achieve the best results. The handle is far better on the crushgrind than on the Hario, but the grip is similar. Also, the crush grind requires a little more effort to turn than the Hario. It probably would be quite nice to have a silicone sleeve to put over the body to improve the grip. I haven't really had problems with either grinder, maybe because my hands are naturally tacky ;)

@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 3 года назад
This is a ball park, but try 20 clicks from fully closed. If your making a single cup (16g of coffee to around 300g finished weight) time the brew, if it exceeds 3mins you'll need to go a little courser, if it's around 2 mins go a little finer. I like to aim for about 2.5mins (not including the bloom) The Crushgrind has a good consistency, so it will be great for a V60 once you've found the correct grind setting :) good luck
@itsTronBonne
@itsTronBonne 3 года назад
@@GadgetViper Thanks for the reply! I have a countertop grinder, which in the v60 I usually get drawdown between 3-4 mins. I bought the Crushgrind for trips into the office, but even at 30 clicks I've had drawdowns of 5 minutes to even 7 minutes (which I found fascinating, though the taste wasn't... great). The v60 filter appears to get clogged towards the end, not sure what causes this - whether I need to go even coarser, or if it's a technique thing. Regardless, I just pull the filter off that early and the coffee tastes great, so I can live with it. Just found it to be an interesting observation. Not sure if there's any obvious tips other that go coarser?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 3 года назад
@@itsTronBonne 7 mins doesn't sound good, my Crushgrind does a pretty good job with grind consistency, some beans do seem to produce more fines than others, bit if you're getting alot of fines despite a the medium grind, thats certainly not ideal. You could compare the grind size from your dialled in home grinder to the Crushgrind and see if it can go alittle coarser. A 'hack' option would be to tip the grinds on to a sheet of kitchen roll and then use that to add to pour the grinds into the V60 funnel, it traps the very fine powder.
@itsTronBonne
@itsTronBonne 3 года назад
@@GadgetViper finding the testing to be fascinating. On Saturday I was dialing in to find my preferred grind size. 25 clicks took exactly 3mins to drawdown and gave (subjectively) the best end result. Reproduced the test today after work. 4 mins with the grinder as it was. Then I cleaned it thoroughly, and got exactly 4 mins again. I'm taking maticulous notes (this is coffee after all :p), and noted that the flow of drawdown is pretty much at a drip around 2 mins 50sec. Even though there's still a decent amount of water still in the cone. The remaining drip takes another minute to get to that wet sand look at the end. There's no muddiness at all - I'm starting to wonder if it's the V60 filter papers. The grinder itself is holding up well, the consistency is pretty much on point - just not timings I'm used to. I do wish the hopper wasn't plastic though. Noticing some pressure cracks at the top.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 3 года назад
@@itsTronBonne I sometimes get a batch of beans that don't work as well in the V60, some definitely seem to clog the filter paper more than others. I have a Virtuoso grinder for home use, and often have to click it a few times to compensate for the variable. I too love the dialling in process, probably why the V60 is one of my favourite brew methods :)

Whats the process of dialling in a grind for a nanopresso using a columbia grinder? I used a Sumatra grumpy mule and pretty much nailed it by eye on 3 clicks so i thought i would buy square mile red brick and now i cant even make a drinkable pull can you help?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
I'm drinking Red Brick right now too! For some reason the Square Mile Coffee seems to grind differently. It's almost like I can fit an extra gram in the double shot basket. I definitely make adjustments when I switch to the red brick. If you think the grind looks the same coarseness as it did on the Sumatra, then try putting less volume in the basket. Not sure if you're using digital scales or just eyeing it. But it might be that there's actually more coffee in the basket than you think. You'll definitely be able to dial it in. If you're 3 clicks from tight on the Columbia grind, that must be pretty damn fine for the Nanopresso, I usually go slightly coarser when I start a new coffee, then go finer and finer until the Nanopresso extraction goes from a thin continuous flow to an intermittent drip. Hope that helps. I'm currently brewing the red brick with my Aeropress Go, I'm really enjoying the Aeropress again.

Yes it is, but I think when you double grind, you can get a fair amount of very powdery fines that can choke some machines up.

Purchased the CrushGrind because of you and looking forward to using it! Do you prefer a finer grind for a pour over? I'm new to it all.
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
The grind on the pour over is dictated by the extraction time. If the grind is too fine, your extraction will take too long. For a 300ml coffee I'd use 18g and be looking for the pour time to be around 2.5 mins. James Hoffman has a video on his brew method (assuming you're using a V60) I'll get you the link :)

Hey, I've got the Crushgrind, too. What setting would you recommend with the Crushgrind to use on a nanopresso? Especially with the double shot barista kit.

My weight working exactly like your haha,, I would like to ask u Witch alternatívne method is closest one espresso machine.. My Mom using machine at home but I wanna to buy her something to garden when is summer tíme, only boiled water and aeropress or something other ? easy to use and clean ..not to much complicate , any advise ? thanks 😉
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
Having used the Aeropress Go for the last week, I would definitely recommend it, just as long as your Mom doesn't insist on Crema. The Aeropress can make a very strong coffee with small volume (like an espresso but without any Crema) You can add two paper filters instead of one for a bit more pressure. Regarding ease of cleaning, there is NOTHING out there that can rival the Aeropress. I'd get her one, and if she doesn't like it, keep it for yourself ;)

@@GadgetViper Hi, what would you start at (click-wise) on the crushgrind before dialling it in specifically?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 4 года назад
@@1988brettp Hi Brett , it really depends what brew method you're using. If it's a high end espresso machine, then maybe a few clicks, if it's the Aeropress or a V60 Pour over, then it would probably need 10-12 clicks, the adjustment is really fine. I'd say one click on the Hario Mill is like 4 clicks on the Crushgrind.

@@GadgetViper Hey, thanks for the quick reply :) I'm just getting into it, so just getting a De'Longhi Dedica which I guess is a low end espresso machine (with good reviews). So I'll go with somewhere between the two to start with.

@@AyushRaj never tried it, but if you go on Reddit, there is a review of it in r/coffee. Looks ok as long as you treat it carefully and dont need an espresso grind. The Hario Slim will be fine for Aeropress or V60's though.
