CSB 2020 UPDATE - A Look at Some Changes to the CSB (Christian Standard Bible) 

I bought the Holman in 2013 or so. I liked it. ( I love the KJV, NKJ, NASB and AMPLIFIED) I use it a lot though. I went to my bookstore (MARDELS) and they had two bibles side by side!. I was going for a new NKJ! I grabbed the wrong one and got home realized it was the CSB. New to me!! I called the store and the guy said it used to be the Holman but now called the CSB!!. But I’m not gonna get another nor a 2020 NASB. But I love all my bibles. It’s new to me everyday!! Read a few verses go back awhile later and it’s like I never read them. Isn’t the HOLY SPIRIT just grand!!😊😊🥰🥰

I agree that people make too big of a deal out of these kinds of things. We live in a "have it your way" society where people have to have "strong opinions" about everything. For my part, I'm thankful for translations like the CSB and ESV that want to refine their text to make it as sharp as possible, and I'm also thankful for translations like the NASB that keep things consistent for decades. Just "give thanks with a grateful heart".

However, l am in two minds about the NASB 1995 and 2020. I love the former. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Tim for the clarity regarding the changes. I too have seen a lot of buzz online regarding the CSB 2020 update. The wording and grammar are important but it seems that some have gotten rather wound by the changes. (both good and bad). It does sound like the translators are taking great care with the smallest details. I am sure I will pick a new version at some point, but I don't feel the need to rush.

The CSB is probably my least referenced translation in my Bible app, thanks for the video, I'll have to spend a little more time with it.

Thank you for the new info on the CSB and the changes being made. Right now I have the CSB app on my iPhone and iPad. So any changes that are made, the app is updated right away. But I still want to get an actual book version of the CSB. It's good to know that when I do buy the CSB, I'll make sure to get the updated one

I have purchased these Bibles in the CSB translation. She reads Truth, (in) courage Devotional Bible, Day by Day Chronoligical Bible, CSB Study Bible, Life Connections Study Bible, Life Essential Interactive Study Bible and I purchased He Reads Truth for hubby. The life connections and life essentials are great Bibles with so many questions posed to readers they are wonderful for groups, or any instant Bible Studies for 1 or more. The Day by Day is good for questions to individual reader too. Gave many gifts of the woman's devotion Bible, (in) courage, ladies love it. Holman is publishing very good specific types of helpful extras. I am enjoying the CSB translation, just started with it last year. Use along with more word for word translations at times. I enjoy all you videos Brother. Thanks for your prospective!✝️🙏

The CSB website provides a detailed list of all the changes made in 2020 update, and also share which versions of the CSB have them.

Overall, I think the 2020 sounds a little more traditional and I think it's an improvement. But I still wish they hadn't done it. People have to be able to rely on a Bible.

Thanks for sharing. It seems to me most of the changes were made for clarity. I'm encouraged when translators use restraint in making changes. The nature of many of the changes sound to me like they were made as a result of reader complaints toward a more traditional wording. Btw, my CSB Study Bible is the 2017 version.

UASV Bible is scheduled to be out in a few months. Stands for the Updated American Standard Version, which is a completely revised updated version of the American Standard Version pretty much a whole new version so there goes that confusion again with updated and revised. Although the revised type Bibles already use the word "revised" and " new" so I guess updated is the only word left lol (although several years ago there's actually a Bible that's online which is referred to as the Refreshed American Standard Version aka RASV lol.

I have been using the csb bible app and I noticed on the 2020 revision, there are fewer footnotes. But, yes, the csb has the potential to become a standard translation if pastors using the NIV would give it a chance.

The verse by verse BIBLE has the changes. So I AM happy to see THAT. It was done in 2020 so I guess all future ones WILL incorporate the updates.

Just bought a 2017 CSB for use as a “readers bible” to read large chunks of scripture more effectively. But I still study using the ESV ( the Reformation Study Bible) or the 95 NASB. My church uses the NIV and it’s just OK.

Having looked through the first several changes, essentially they are now using the KJV wording.

Personally I prefer the Luke 1:46 phrase 'my soul praises the greatness of the Lord' to 'my soul magnifies the Lord. ' In the first one, the Lord is already great. In the second one, the Lord seems small, and must be made to appear greater by our work.

very interesting prospectives you have on all the translation ... based on your information, am considering purchasing one of the Goat-Skin ESV bibles ... however cant tell, base on Bible descriptions, the true size of the Bible in question ... an area titled 'Features' give one dimension, and the area titled 'Product Detail' gives another dimension, what is the difference? ... am looking for ESV, Goat-Skin, Black, 1-verse per line, cross reference, and a dimension that will house a typical sheet of paper (8.5 x 11) folded in-half (8.5 x 5.5) ...

I have to admit that the plethora of translations, and the constant revisionsand/or updates have left me totally confused...and unhappy.., When I started looking into various translation....a few weeks ago, I was amazed at the variety I found. Having been a Catholic, since the late 80’s, I had pretty much stuck with the RSV:CE (my fav), and the NAB, which I think we can all agree is an abysmal translation. I did have a copy of thd NKJV, but had not used it much.., I had spent some years with my family, involved with a large non denim evangelical church (Chutch of Christ?), I did become familiar with thd NIV, but never had a copy... When attending Bible Studies, I would use my Catholic Study Bible... I have an MAR from a Catholic institution...so my theology remained definitely Catholic... They later switched to the ESV, which I knew nothing about.... Having listened to lots of commentary about thd most popular translations, I have made the decision to stay with the NKJV, the RSV, and the ESV. I use the Ignatius Press NT Study Bible....Annotated by Scott Hahn and a colleague..Curtis... I suddenly can’t remember his last name, though I know it🙃. You should take a look at it, and review it. The notes are excellent...but written from a Catholic perspective, of course. Nevertheless, it is worth exploring. I particularly like the NKJV, and keep returning to it. Probably because I grew up hearing the KJV, like everyone else... I’m discovering Scrioture all over again, and at 77, thst is a very good thing... I have a decent collection of very old Bibles...and a few newer ones, and sm happily adding to it. Sorry to be so long... The isolation imposed by COVID invites reflection.🥺

I just got my CSB and NASB2020 in the mail today, idk which one I’ll end up liking more, I feel safer with the NASB, just because it’s more literal, but I like the CSB for getting more understanding, I feel like it speaks the “heart language” better than the NASB.

Bibles are getting updated like smartphones do. It's so confusing and sometimes discouraging..

Will there ever be an end to these updates? This is at least something that the KJV and even NKJV guys have in their favor -- the text is stable. It never changes. I guess the NKJV theoretically could be revised at some point but Thomas Nelson seems to understand that that would not be a good idea.

I messaged them directly and they have said that it will be a 12-18 months before the updated version will be rolled out, (as of August 2020).

I just looked through my CSB bibles (12 of them) and found only one of them was the 2020 version despite the fact that 3 of them were purchased this year (2023) and 4 others are from 2022 the last 5 were from 2021 making them all from after the update. The fact that I can buy a brand new CSB bible in 2023 and it is still the 2017 version is very annoying to me as I find it difficult to keep up with all these translation updates to even know when to check to see if I'm getting the newest version. While you downplayed the update as minor, I found there were a significant number of changes (admittedly small ones) that were not listed. They need to keep a text fairly stable in my opinion and unfortunately this has left me with a negative reaction to the CSB in general as it already had a massive update from the HCSB. The CSB was a version I had just really began using to become more familiar with (that is why I am just now seeing your video) and now I know I do not even have the current text to refer to other than in one specific reference. I suppose all the younger people using digital content just get the text updated automatically but having purchased physical study bibles I will either have to update them or live with it. I do know this will likely bias me against ever using it as a main translation despite a couple of excellent study bibles only available in the CSB. I know it shouldn't but it probably will hehe. I guess this is part of the reason I still default the the NKJV.

It is hard to know if you are getting a 2017 or 2020. For example yesterday I got a 2017 w/o updates. After getting 2020 in various other BIBLES. Both are good but would prefer to get latest NOW. A minor update is when you can choose. A major update is when you are stuck with the old.

So here's the problem with these "updates"; the publishers aren't being transparent in their marketing by differentiating between the old and the new. Of course that info is on the publisher/copyright page, but one should not have to go through the hassle of wishful purchasing only to discover that the item ordered is in fact not the updated text. This can be avoided if the publishers were transparent and labeled the updated editions. All the money these publishers spend on advertising they could do this easily. As regard to the so called "updating" of the text, it seems to be the trend among publisher's today to one up one another by updating their text. Why not wait at minimum a decade before updating the text. And within that 10 year timeframe, various texts would be analyzed and whichever changes or improvements, etc., would be set to apply ("updated") by the next schedule. IMO, constantly updating the text of Scripture just seems to come across as either sloppy scholarship or trying to keep up with the Joneses.

And this is one reason why I am really looking forward to the Legacy Standard Bible in 2021 that will have zero revisions or updates for the next 50 years.

Hello Tim, do you think atoning sacrifice was better rendered as was for the 21st century reader's understanding instead of mercy seat?

I heard recently on a video (not one of yours) that the HCSB was branded a Southern Baptist Bible, not just because of coming out of Lifeway, but because a number of scriptures were worded in a way to strongly support Southern Baptist doctrine. The same video also suggested that the CSB was conceived in order to remove these overt doctrinal biases in favour of a more balanced ecumenical translation. I'd love you to do a thorough investigation into this and report your findings in a video.

Personally, the CSB and ESV are updating/revising too much for my liking. I'm sticking with the NIV, NKJV, NASB and checking out other versions like the RSV or NRSV. At least until they get settled.

Personally, CSB 2017 is an update/a revision of the HCSB (which has a lot of updates too) already. 2017 is fine, it does not need an update yet. But sadly they did. I'm wondering why are they publishing a text that they aren't sure if what they did is more accurate? So how can I be sure of this 2020 update that it is an "accurate" update if sooner or later they will update it again in the name of "accuracy and readability"? Again, I hope CSB and ESV will stop frequently updating its text. Unless there is an advancement in the field of Biblical studies and changes in the English language. Because CSB 2017 (for me personally) is an excellent update of an update.

CSB Bible, the " Wallflower" of the Bible translation DANCE. Everybody wants to dance with the ESV.

I do not have a copy of the CSB, but I do prefer the unchanged pericopes to the new 2020 Changs. I would have to stick with the 2017 edition when I do purchase my copy of CSB (in Goat skin, of course). Just my .02 cents!

I just purchased my first CSB via Amazon. Item is in transit. It's a Personal size large print leathersoft edition. I didnt know about the 2020 update until after I purchased. I have no idea if It's the 2017 version or if it has the 2020 update. I think the publisher should really clarify exactly what version they are selling. And if they put out an update, they should pull the 2017 versions off the shelves and replace them with the 2020 text. I know the updates are minor but this just bothers me.

I chuckled a bit with the "Nanny" change. I also thought of the TV show "The Nanny" :-) I think they updated because of the 'love' of the HCSB readers with more formal terminology (just my opinion also) :-) Thankfully, I have both to compare: - HCSB (2009): Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth so You should tell me, ‘Carry them at your breast, as a nursing woman carries a baby,’ to the land that You swore to give their fathers? (Numbers 11:12) - CSB (2017): Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth so you should tell me, ‘Carry them at your breast, as a nanny carries a baby,’ to the land that you swore to give their fathers? (Numbers 11:12)

I'm reading through the 2020 now, and I don't have a 2017 text to compare it to, but I find the CSB frustrating. Part of me likes it because it's sort of a dressed up version of the NLT, but some of the choices they've made are just...frustrating. They'll oversimplify some words (presumably to make the text more readable in modern English) like changing serpent to snake, But in other instances they'll say "host" for army. "A great host" sounds more literary and better in my opinion, but it's really out of character for the rest of the book. It really is a schizophrenic translation to me. And in some cases, the alternate translations they provide in the notes sound better to me than what's in the text. It's maddening. 😂

I was disappointed that they did not update psalm 91:3 from “bird trap” to almost anything else! I know “Fowlers snare” is a net to catch birds but reading aloud to a congregation that they’ll be protected from a “bird trap” just sounds goofy. Oh and the very familiar Jeremiah 33:3. Why the word “incomprehensible?” First, what good is it for God to reveal to me something that’s incomprehensible? Second, it’s just not a good read aloud word in the context of the verse. CSB is my favorite translation but I cringe every time I come to these places in we’ll known passages. Thanks for your channel.

What about the change in Genesis 3:16 or was CSB always that way? When it talks about the woman’s curse.

I guess I'm in the minority here but generally speaking I don't see a significant problem with updating a Bible translation now and again.

You know....this can be frustrating....when will it end? You buy a Bible translation in good faith and before you know it they change it again....and again.....and again. I bought several HCSBs and I had to rebuy the CSB....now we are forced to buy ANOTHER update of the CSB

They made a mistake on backtrack translating the word languages , back to the somewhat improper - tongues. That is my main complaint. Speaking in a "tongue" for us native English speakers, has an American Indian "speak in fork-tongue" primative nuance. The better word is language(s), and is supported by the real language context of the history of the New Testament. (For example, Acts 2)

I got a NEW CSB bible today and it is NOT the 2020 update. If it IS..it will say 2020 text on the copyright page.

The CSB and NKJV may be the ONLY 2 NEW translations this century. ESV updated RSV.. NASB..I guess in 1977 was NEW based on critical text.

I have a massive problem with csb. and it goes back to when they were called the hcsb. An absolute error that they have not fixed yet. Matthew 16:26 they use the word life instead of soul this changes the message from spiritual to physical it is a grotesque error in judgment and clearly we're not led by the Holy Spirit. The way it profits me, is that I won't suffer while I'm alive. When the message was, what good does material things do you if you spend eternity in hell? That if you trust in that you're not trusting in God. By changing that single word, it destroys the message. The original word literally means breath. but by implication means life, Spirit, or soul depending on how it's used. In this case it clearly meant soul. That they would mess this up from the beginning and then not fix it after two major updates shows me they're not going to which means that to me my family and my congregation this Bible is off-limits.

CSB needs to be consistent, if they don’t they will loose out to the ESV, as is they whom I assume , who they are targeting. It’s a great translation but it cannot put out a premium bible and not the update text. I think they have I was told, ESV and NIV all have made update up they ave a target audience and it is a sold base. ESV like the NASB band NIV haves lexicons Greek and Hebrew text that reflect their translation CSB does not so in my view they need to stabilised their translation, put out a Concordance and and Greek ad Hebrew interlinear, then they packing a big punch. Notwithstanding, CSB is number 4 on the top selling bibles. If it stabilises then who knows in England where the NIV, RSV, NRSV have a strong clientele weigh Hoddler and Stoughton the English arm of Zondervan for the NIV, and Collins for the ESV- changing the American English for the British. CSB, hass been my go to for the past two years. We in England are not exposed with our Liberal mindset to theses issues of translations. ESV, is like the App,e of Bible translation and NIV is like the Samsung, and the CSB which is now becoming a top translation os like the Huawei- excellent translation similar to that of the ESV in its top bibles... But it need a British market that will make a big difference.

There are heavenly planes, the "lower heavens" is the realm of the cosmic powers/ princes etc. The True Church rules with[in] Christ in the higher heavens. This change back to the popular " power of the air" was very unnecessary!

I wish these publishers would just leave their translations alone. I guess sales have dropped.

I like CSB because I liked HCSB and the 2017 version seems to be a real translation. Not just update as in CSB 2020. ESV..revised 2016. NASB 1995..best of 3 . NKJV..1982..apparently a new translation but sounds like KJV. KJV ..1769. Just based on what is currently accurate I favour CSB 2017/ 2020 ESV 2016 NASB 1995 NKJV 1982 KJV 1769. I hope it stops for awhile.

I have been studying the document that Tim refers to in the video. I found that 20% of the OT passages are a reversion to the NIV renderings and a whopping 80%! of the NT passages revert to the NIV. I say "reversion" and "revert" because the NIV precedes the CSB in time. The CSB (HCSB) first saw the light of day way back in 1999, the NIV about two decades earlier. It has taken the CSB committee 20 years (1999-2020) to decide that the NIV got it mostly right (80% of changes) for the NT and somewhat right (20% of changes) for the OT. When they tell us in this same document that they are done with making changes, should we believe them?

Why does the CSB have missing verses

Honestly unless one has a Bible falling apart, i would encourage people not buy Bibles at all. They should definitely keep the coat of many colors BECAUSE THAT DEFINITELY ALTERS THE IMPACT OF THE COAT AND THEREFORE ALTERS SCRIPTURE.

All updates are a $$$ grab, as churches will invariably order new copies of these updated bibles in bulk, and other resources will also gets sales boosts as a result (new study bibles, concordances, etc). Seriously, do we really need more than one new bible every 50 years? English doesn't change that much!
