The new CNC plasma table is put to work on the first parts for the dozer. Now that the engine location is settled and grill, hood, dash and seat positions are known, we can modify the frame to accommodate the operator and confirm the location of operation controls. Meanwhile, we are looking at track options and begin thinking about track design and are ready to start on the track drive controls.

I think you said on one of the vids that you were going to weld the track plates to the drive chain for your cat tracks. May I suggest that you weld brackets to the chain then bolt the track plates on to the brackets. Although it may be more work at first. it will be much easier to change out the plates when you need to. Also the full size machines all have bolt on track plates, it would be more authentic like the big machines. Just a thought from a fellow machinist. I love how you have kept both machines as authentic as you can with certain limitations you are working with!

I'll have to consider that, but I don't see ever wearing out the tracks considering this will not be used all that much. I might damage a track, so being able to replace one might be important. Need to figure out a way to do that without a huge amount of additional work. It might be easier to just break the chain and replace the track pad and chain link together. Hmm...

Frank. Rethink what you said about your connecting rod linkages for the trunnions. The hydrostats are both facing the same direction so the actuators will both go the same direction for either forward or reverse. The only issue you might have is connecting the right hand lever to the correct actuator since they’re both on the left side of the hydrostat.
@woodandmetalshoptime8048
@woodandmetalshoptime8048 2 года назад
You are correct (and paying attention!) In an upcoming episode, I think #11 (I just uploaded #12) you'll see the solution. Once I sat down and drew it out, it was obvious, they both move in the same direction for forward and reverse.

For you linkage to the trunions you could take a peace a flat bar drill 3 holes in it the center hole would be a pivot point, then drill a hole above and below your pivot point then attach your linkages when you push the peace of flat bar shifter ahead your linkage above the pivot point will move forward while the bottom one goes backwards

Just finished episode 9, and am watching episode 10. How are you going to drive one track forward, and the other track in reverse, for a pivot within itself? This question has been bothering me since the first time I saw the two drive gear boxes. That will work great in the forward, and reverse, but what about when turning? I know the gear boxes have differentials internally which will allow braking for one side while driving the other side, but how are you going to have one track forward, and one track in reverse? The little Truck dozer from the sixties did a great job with this but it was all with belt drive to each track.
@woodandmetalshoptime8048
@woodandmetalshoptime8048 2 года назад
One axle drives the right track, the other axle drives the left track. Each is controlled independently. There are no brakes. Episodes 3 and 4 show how the axles are modified to accomplish this. The drive sprockets are on diagonally opposite corners as a result.

I have a 4x4' table and that table is nice. The start should be in the inside of circle and outside of the outside. I think that is a setting on your software. We have different hard/soft but we both have plasma. Nice cut. Sounds as if you have a 40 amp plasma and doing good. Expect dross. You are not using a laser which is cleaner. The kerf size is needed on the size of holes. e.g. when you draw a line there is thickness of cut. Is it outside, inside or on the line ? on the line really - but half of the kerf is inside the hole. see software. Like you were doing - remember dogs and grandchildren need eye protection. Welder goggles work. They want to look. Eyes will get cataracts or floaters.

Great video! Just a suggestion, I ran heavy equipment for many years and ran a John Deere hydrostat dozer quite often. It had two foot pedals to control forward and reverse for each track that leaves your right hand free to control the blade which you need to do constantly. It would make your life much easier to have pedals but you have probably already made it with levers...... Will the blade have tilt or angle?
@woodandmetalshoptime8048

Those goof-ups to keep talking about on the edge if you look on the back you'll probably see a spot or rust right there. I have been around an awful lot of plasma cutters in my life and I have never seen one that cut without "any" slag left on the part. In fact, in any shop, I've been in if they gave me parts to fit or weld with no more slag on than what your parts have I would be tickled pink.
@woodandmetalshoptime8048
@woodandmetalshoptime8048 2 года назад
Hey, Steve, I discovered that the notches in the edge of the workpiece are caused by the angle of entry of the torch. I've changed it from 90 degrees to 60 degrees and the notches have almost completely disappeared. Slag or dross on the bottom surface, of course, is a fact of life. The challenge, as you've noted, is to minimize it to reduce clean up labor.

45 min video of which 35 minutes was talking about what your going to do and 5 minutes showing what you've done off camera and 5 minutes of actual work being done. Unfortunately all these build series turn out that way. 90% talk 5% off camera work and 5% actual work. Not critsizing, just wishing for more actual footage of the work being done. For me Ideally id like a 5 min. intro, the weeks work in fast forward perhaps with a voice overly explanation of methods and reasons. I hope Im not out of line with my suggestion. I love the build and wish to "see" more of it! Thanks...joe
