Cub Cadet Dozer Build Episode 13, "Which Hole is That?"

The engine belt tensioner is finished while the hydrostat control is assembled and installed. Frame modifications and drive hub extensions are added and the first drive sprocket is mounted. It's beginning to look a little bit like a bulldozer!
Using parts from two vintage Cub Cadet garden tractors, along with metal fabrication and welding work, we are building a mini dozer from (almost) scratch.
I use a Langmuir Systems Crossfire Pro plasma table with a Razorcut 45CNC plasma cutter and a machine torch to create many needed parts. At times we shift to the Bridgeport-clone knee/vertical mill or South Bend 10 inch lathe to complete a machining step. Occasionally, the South Bend shaper or the Logan lathe is called on for specialty work.
A Hobart Handler welder is my primary MIG welder, and it comes into play at nearly every step. If I'm not running the welder, an Oxy/Acetylene torch or the Eastwood Cut 40 plasma cutter is fired up for some molten metal removal.
Making a mini-dozer will add to the collection of equipment that I previously built, including the mini-motor grader and the tandem axle Cub Cadet dump truck/gator.
Dewalt and Makita grinders and drills, eVolution metal cutting saws, a Grizzly metal cutting band saw and Jet grinders and sanders see regular use in my projects.

Amazing attention to detail, Frank. I do similar things, but with wood … and they are toys. It’s the build that’s important and my grandchild’s eyes when they see what I’ve made for them.

My little cousin became an engineer. Growing up, he would try and fix everything he would find on the street. We lived in government housing and had little money. I remember he built me a bike from scraps. I'm so proud of him because he was always meant to be what he is and he accomplished it. 1st engineer in the family. Your build reminds me of him and how he could turn anything into anything, if you know what I mean. As for me, I was never really good at building things but I always encouraged him to go to school for it, so in my eyes, I've accomplished a lot.

I think the drive system is genius. when I saw you operate it I noticed how effortlessly it turned I noticed the engine pitch didn't change much, that is why I wanted to watch the build, to see how you did it without braking it. It's great. Keep up the good work.

I agree, the mods to the differentials is unique & also very creative. Gets you that "spin in place" just like the big boys while keeping it Cub Cadet pure. I like it. I restored an old Struck Mini Dozer awhile back which uses belts & a reverse jack shaft to accompolish the same spin in place result. Not nearly as sturdy as yours will be but functional. Keep thinking outside the box!

I had a suspicion you were van engineer with the machinery you have. I also see tw osides to you. I see someone who is good at engineering and working problems out to get a result in the work with a serious attitude to what he does. I also see a soft side in your heart with your dogs. They come to see you and you melt a bit to give them some time. A decent honest person who builds what he wants when he wants. I like making things but I dont have all of the tools and materials, but I manage to get by and make small things. I have always dreamed of building my ideal kit car . I drew a car on the back of one of my exercise books while at school back in the early 70's. I am nearly 60 now and still havent managed to build a kit car or the car of my dreams. Life has just got in the way. lol. I enjoy the vids and at my age, I learn while watching these types of vids, just in case I decide to do something on a larger scale.

Great solution for the controls, but I would highly recommend that you space them equally from the center of the tractor. You can cut a piece of the outer tube off to space the handle for the inner shaft towards the center of the tractor. For the future, I would highly recommend that you step up to large holes using a bit that is at least 1/2 the diameter of the finished size. If larger than 3/4" three steps. On the hubs, just make a sleeve that fills the gap from 7/16" to 1/2" studs. A half inch OD tube with a 7/16" ID would work, you may have to bore the tube out slightly. I hope my comments don't offend you, I know how difficult building a one off project is and how you have to constantly adjust from what is believed to what is necessary. I think you are doing a great job.
@shunloc9704

To center the wheel spacers consider welding a tube that fits the inside of the wheel spacer to the face of the axle flange. If this is a snug running fit, the sleeve will also transfer the sprocket vertical loads into the axle rather than relying on friction between the spacer and flange to stay centered.

For various outside and inside diameters of tubing, take a look at Aircraft Spruce and Speciality. The stock almost every size anyone would need. Their tubing is 4130. They also cut to length, so you can get what you need. The nice thing is, you can choose a wall thickness to work with your desired size tap.for inner threading. They also stock 4130 sheet, aluminum tubing, AN hardware.and control cables.

looking good so far, you have some neat ideas on this build, and im looking forward to the next videos coming up, keep up the good work. as far as the lug problem you are having, the older garden tractors had lug bolts that are about 1 3/4 inch long that go in from the front, i mounted my adapters on my build with those and they tightened up nicely with no issues at all. good luck with this, and cant wait for the next one to watch, thanks for your time and knowledge you share with all of us, wished there was someway i could send you pics of the bolts im talking about.

I have the original wheel bolts that came on these tractors, so I think I know what you are talking about. They are just too small for the 5/8 inch holes in the spacers. I have since installed longer bolts and used the 7/16 inch lug nuts which solved the problem.

Instead of the purchased wheel spacers, you could have made a spacer that looks like a thread bobbin (or wire spool). Would only have to plasma cut two discs, with center hole for a 5" long piece of heavy wall pipe, and the bolt pattern of choice. Could have even sized the pipe to go into the center of the sprocket for extra centering. (Retired engineer here as well).
@woodandmetalshoptime8048

Actually thought about that--I have wheel spacers made exactly like that for putting "duals" on the Cub Cadets (and other garden tractors). But auto wheel spacers are so inexpensive to buy, sometimes you have to decide where you want to spend your time.

You're doing a great job putting the build and the project together. I really do enjoy watching. I think I'd make a spacer to help the 7/16inch bolts. Just using a tapered lug but will center things pretty good but I think the spacers would add additional strength to the 5 inch spacers you're mounting the sprocket on. It should transfer the torque through the assembly better. But I'm that guy who over engineers everything!

I know i asked a few episodes back about how you made the drive axles oppose one another and hadnt had the time as of late to go back to the beginning and figured the only way was to make one side of each axle a free wheel, which would work better as the fab and fitting would be easier as opposed to using zero turn drive motors, requiring four, one for each wheel would be asking alot from a 14hp engine, really enjoy the build...

Instead of using the plastic to put resistance on those levers I would have got some small thin cable and welded down or clamp it down to the metal and wrap it around 3/4 of the way like a cam and strung it to a spring that's attached on the frame somewhere and it would always put pressure on that lever.

I sure hope the face those 7/16 lug nuts are mounting against is tapered. If not, they are going to be relying on very little surface friction to keep them from backing off. Also with such little surface contact could easily create a ring on the lug nut taper causing them to lossen that way also. You need to always go taper to taper or flat face to flat face. Ignore all of this if the hole is tapered, there is no way to see that in the video.

Aren't you thinking backwards? Why add friction to the shafts when that will create more effort for the "return to center" springs to work harder!?

No return to center springs in the plan right now. Friction only. Maybe later?

If needed a more powerful engine could easily be installed, so as long as it is built sturdily down the road you can change your mind if you decide to move something you never intended to. That is the thing about build it yourself, nobody to say you just screwed up your warranty mister!

This "foam" material are wery resonant. I think it should be som more "dead" material used fore the panel. What about using some sort of honeycomb material from paper, or aluminium and paper? Paper are among the best materials in cones due to its "dead" charakter.

I think you would be better off using a sleeve of some type, shouldn't be to hard to fill that space.

WHY NOT USE A 5/8 BUSHING WITH A 7/16 HOLE OR DRILLED TO 7/16 AND WELD THE BUSHING IN SO IT WON'T MOVE

You should check out "Making Stuff" youtube channel for his video "Making Tracks for a Tracked Vehicle or Tank". He does a good job and maybe you can find some ideas from his work...
@GussCustomCreations
@GussCustomCreations 2 года назад
He doesn't make anything he uses a rubber track from a utility vehicle. Not the same thing. It's a Segway scooter with a track.

@kentmckean6795 2 года назад
@@GussCustomCreations Nope. He uses a rubber track, but he fabricates the framework, idlers and tension system. All directly relatable to this project.

@@kentmckean6795 yeah but it's not better just different. I watch that channel also. A dozer is going to be different than a Segway. Not that he doesn't do a great job, it's just a different application. A dozer is heavy and a material mover, not a tracked scooter if you understand what I mean. I also mean no disrespect, just a different type of vehicle.
