Culgoa Floodplain National Park is a remote park in outback Queensland, around 230km SW of Saint George. Formerly Byra station, it now protects 61900ha of low-lying alluvial floodplains. A great place for a remote camping trip to a less visited park, to enjoy a week camping in silence.
In part 1 of 2, I visit Byra Lagoon, Redbank Hut, the cattle yards, and an old pastoral ruin, along with camping at the campgrounds and exploring the surrounds on my solo trip.

Hi mate. Great videos. The tree scar is a natural one, caused by either another tree falling across the living tree or a sapling next to the main trunk that died. Aboriginal tree scars are usually higher on the tree, and will often exhibit some scarring on the sap wood. Keep up the good work.

hey brett i think its really good what your doing wish i could do it. Im going to retire in a couple of years.ill be 62. then hopefully i can do what your doing. ive just paid my house off so now im pretty free. it scares me to do what you are doing. at least this way when im old i have a place to stay rent free. take care mate love your vids

Not many people like the nothingness out there where you are,or at least,that is the way it's perceived.You and I can see lots of beauty in the different shades and colours,patterns and ruins etc.Oh man,watching you being happy on the open road makes me happy,and somewhat envious 😊 The jiggle hose is a good option for what you are using it for,the only way I can stand using one though is if I store it laid out in a straight line,very annoying trying to make it straight every time,especially in winter. A little sad seeing the dead creatures,but that's part of the cycle I guess. Oh,that white fabric I've seen used as,like a ceiling to keep the space a bit cooler in a tin shed,and stop some of the dust and stuff falling in your face whilst sleeping at night. All the best to you as you keep Roaming the outback 👍😊

Thanks Wayne. yes much to see for those like us. I'm sure you'll get planning a trip away soon put some km's on your Defender. Was thinking a short bamboo stick would be helpful for the jiggle hose, just use rubber bands to get it straight for those 2 minutes I need it.

Very interesting Brett and nice photography. I particularly like the drone shots to the horizon, it shows the vastness of our land. I have always enjoyed the tranquility and isolation of the outback. The feeling that we, my wife and I are the only people here at the moment. The only sound is natural, not like the cities and towns where there is a constant hum in the background. I have asked a great many people if they here the background hum of society, and most tell me that until I pointed it out, they never realized it was there. Car tyres running on bitumen and engines, air conditioners on factories, office blocks and shopping centres etc.. I have watched RU-vid videos of people camping/exploring in other parts of the world and a lot of the time you can here that hum. I think we are so lucky we can escape it...

98% of the time I had just nature to myself. Again, unfortunately, there's a flight path overhead. Probably Brisbane to Perth flights. At least I know society hasn't collapsed while I'm away camping away from it all. I particularly noticed that hum while I was living on Cape York, each time I went to Cairns I was blown away again by the insanity of society and constant noise, both visual and auditory. After a couple days I readjusted and didn't notice it. We are indeed lucky. Thanks

1) Noogoora Burr. It's right up there with Bathurst Burr as the two greatest problems in the wool industry. I hope you cleaned your tyres at the exit :-) 2) I remember when the Jiggle Syphon came along in the 80's - we all bought them. They are a marvel and you should always carry a couple of them. Today we have Tanami Pumps for fuel and water which match each drum type / shape. 3) Cast Iron ? You mean corrugated iron galvanised sheeting. :-) Were you thinking of roast pork in the cast iron pot ?? 4) The electricity was probably 32v DC driven from batteries powered by a single cylinder diesel. 5) The concrete trough is late 70's early 80's. Quite new. 6) Shingle-back lizard ?? 7) That goat was probably shot by the rangers. 8) The contrast is stark. From light pastel to deep red. Must be the geology. I watched it all. Great. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks and cheers.

Thanks for the name Ade. The ground in some places was nothing but a matting of thorny seed a cm deep! Yes, corrugated iron.. I caught that while I was editing.. It appears to be a shingleback. A beautifully designed skull.

Thanks for sharing that mate. Absolutely beautiful country. No noise of industry, only the music of nature at its finest. watching you as you reset (walk barefoot) and the smile on your dial, really good to see. Just an idea for that jiggle hose... get a length of poly tube and end caps, it would fit just laid out behind your seats. I cant wait till i've got my Disco operational again, not long now. So, living vicariously through you is helping keep me sane :) Cheers for sharing cobber. Hoorroo for now.

There is evidence that indigenous people would scar the trees near water areas for various reasons including making canoes! Sometimes you can spot trees that are trained to grow in a cross shape marking water spots.

Good advice Brett I walked upstream a couple of klms and then back through the gorge Really crumbly edges which were pretty tricky to climb up without them crumbling and falling on me Then extremely difficult to walk quietly down the gorge because of all the grass and logs The burrs you had in your tyre we called (at Injune) goats head burrs- like two sets of goats horns

yes, I only found a couple of spots where I entered the gorge safely. Goats head makes sense.. My thongs still have bits embedded in them!

Hi Brett, awesome video. I have a question about your Defender. How many kilometres does it have on it and in that time have you ever had any major issues with the 200Tdi? All the best.

Thanks George. Done 385000km.. Only issue were gearbox blew up about 60000km ago, but I had plenty of notice it was on its way out. And had a complete engine rebuild about 18000km due to a stuffed crankshaft keyway requiring a new crankshaft. Otherwise it keeps ticking on over.

Is it all 4x4 out that way Brett or would a well equipped high clearance 2 wheel drive be able to get there, and what about towing a high clearance off road caravan go ?? Keep it up, love your stuff mate.

Ideally stick with a 4x4, but there were quite a few well graded gravel tracks that a 2wd could do just fine. As you'll see in part 2 some sections are dust holes that a 2wd may not get through. Off road caravan again likely to get into most parts of the park. If it rains tracks become impassable. Other section rocky as, so decent offroad tyres required to take the punishment.

@@RoamingTheOutback I was there over the night of 9th June. Didn't go further than the very first campsite at a Lagoon. 5kms toward Redbank hut I turned around for fear of getting bogged, although it didn't rain at all for my time there. Totally worth it for the Budgies. I'll have to watch your vids again, but surely you'd have mentioned if there were massive swarms of Budgies? It was hard to record them, and I only have action cam and iPhone, but I did get some footage. They really would throw off predators because it's so hard to distinguish individuals.
