Googs Track South Australia - 4wd Solo Touring

Googs Track in South Australia is located a short drive North of Ceduna. In September 2015 I completed a solo crossing in my Land Rover Defender over 4 days. Googs Track is a single vehicle track crossing 363 sand dunes from South to North. It passes through the Yumbarra Conservation Park and Yellabinna Regional Reserve.
The Track was constructed by John ‘Goog’ Denton between 1976 to 1979. It is 4wd only access due to the sandy dunes, not suitable for soft roaders. There are no facilities along its route so travellers much be totally self sufficient for fuel, food and water. A sand flag is highly recommended.
Highlights along the track are Googs Lake and Mount Finke, both providing basic campsites.
I completed the exploration from Ceduna ending in Glendambo, an approximate distance of 570km. Goog’s Track is a well known trail for 4WD and adventure enthusiasts.

I made the decision at 19 years to leave everything behind (which was nothing) and travelled the world on my own in the Merchant navy and when I left I carried on. One life, one time.

Amazing landscape, reminds me of a trip when we were supposed to take the Great Central Road to the east from Laverton. The road was closed, so we detoured across the Nullarbor Plain by highway. Somewhere east of Ceduna we took a track north passing Kingoonya. The landscape looked much like this video. Great memories !

GREETINGS FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA. GREAT VIDEO. I WAS MORE OR LESS OUT THIS WAY BACK IN 1962 IN A SERIES 2 LAND ROVER WHEN THE NULLARBOUR WAS JUST A TRACK AND THERE WAS AN OLD METAL GATE SEPARATING SOUTH AND WESTERN AUSTRALIA. I TOO WAS TRAVELLING SOLO AND WAS 21 AT THE TIME. NO SATELLITE PHONES IN THOSE DAYS!!!

Just came across this fabulous post of yours and very enjoyable watch. Friends have recently completed this trip and loved it. I too had a mechanic (a friend actually) install 4 new shock absorbers and major service and PRE trip on my 1997 Disco back in 1999. I departed on the first leg of my trip at 0300hrs. 2 hours in on inland QLD gravel roads 3 shock absorbers had lost the mounting nuts. That required a limp into the nearest town and about 3 hours delay. Since then I check everything every time.

Great work Brett - and so much more authentic than many of those commercial efforts we see on the box. Spinning wheels and product placements left, right and centre drive me mental. Your vids capture what I like about taking the deefer out on the tracks - and you've whet my appetite for another trip! Love it. Long time watcher of your vids, and now a supporter on your new patreon site (great initiative!).

Like you, I longed to 'roam', but unlike yourself, being married with a family was the prohibitive factor for me. I simply couldn't spare the time nor money to travel tp the places I wanted to. But now, mid forties, I am preparing my vehicle and creating an itinerary. Finally, it's going to happen, the way I want it to. This is occurring much later in life than I'd hoped... my former wife and I talked about heading off on such a trip with the kids and a camper, but again, life got in the way. But, so long as I go everywhere in Australia I want to go before I die, I'll be buried with a smile on my dial. Cheers for the inspiration to finally get out there. See you on the tracks!

Fantastic video, Brett! I was totally impressed with your trail repairs as well. I hope you properly fixed your exhaust, but even more, I hope you kept your bottle cap washer! That's the kind of character all old trucks need ;)

Thanks Scott. Yes the exhaust was properly repaired a few months later and to this day I still have the bottle cap in place!

Beautifull video. I travelled back in 1984 with another bloke from Perth to Darwin. From Canarvon to Katherine on and of we had a lot of grevel, no bitume roads in those years. It really felt like travelling in the outback when leaving York WA after a few days. I hitchhiked from Katherine to Townsville and from there took the Greyhound to Melbourne. The silence with only some native birds and the sandflies brought back manny good memories from my traveling around the whole of Australia. Yust awesome to see your video great video mate, good on you.

Thanks Maurice. I can only image how incredible the experience was back then before bitumen made everything easily accessible. An adventure I could only dream of today in Australia.

I've been on a track near this one ( but different ) many years ago. Opens up to big sand dunes and big beautiful open white sand beaches.. beautiful spot. A time when I actually bothered to go somewhere unlike lately...😁 ( I was with some people who new the area well and had 4 wheel drives ).

Great edit Brett was good to watch and see what the Googs track is about. As a 110 200tdi driver I can appreciate how tiring those dunes would be.

Thanks mate. Yes it can take its toll after a day driving. Still don't think I'd feel right ever driving anything else.

Always enjoy following your videos, My Defender has not had as many trips in the remote outback yet but time permitting this will change soon. Great work.
