That Arachne beta is outstanding; it's been my primary version since it came out. I print a lot of tiny functional parts with intricate features and this variable line width is doing a fantastic job at cleaning up the path. Works just as well as S3D in many cases. Very excited for the merge

As a guess, the odd infill pattern on the cylinder may be due to the old engine trying to solve the infill along either X or Y as much as possible (Sensible to only move one axis at a time as much as possible to prevent inaccuracies with material placement). It then looks like it's trying to approximate by "Squaring the circle" as much as it can instead of tracing the arc. If you look closely, one part of it has it doing parallel lines until it gets infeasible to continue due to the narrowness of the direction of travel (Possibly controlled by minimum infill length settings) then the less dominant axis takes over and it can more readily trace the curve until it reaches the other side and it goes back to it's funky ways. I see this as being a huge improvement: Time saved for more efficient tracing. Les vibration introduced on model because it's not doing so many direction changes - less chance for a tall model to work itself loose. More efficient use of material / less chance for blobbing from over extrusion. EDIT: Less retraction so less chance of extruder breakage of filament.

Nice preview for the upcoming Cura. I like that new line type mode, especially the seams. I use the support blocker feature a lot when I'm testing new functional models. I change the blocks to a cutting mesh and adjust the settings so I can turn off features I don't want to print. Saves hours of printing and meters of filament when you're trying to fine tune the size or shape of a particular feature in a model. Great content as always.

The crushed inner walls issue is often caused by the mathematical discrepancies that processors have with floating point numbers. When you code with floating point you cannot properly use the "equals" operator, you use programming techniques to effectively ask "near enough equal to" The work around is often to drop the inner line width by a really small value, say to 0.39 or 0.38 instead of 0.4 This will make near zero difference to the amount of filament extruded for each section (and they are inner walls anyway) but it will spoof the slicer into thinking the final inner wall is "near enough equal to" the available space in the model

Good info, thanks. The new engine should help. Try creating a flat disc say 25mm in diameter with a 5mm hole in the center, one layer high. Slice it in Cura with concentric lines and look at it. Then slightly change the outer diameter, say to 27mm and slice again. Cura has a lot of trouble getting this right, you have to tweak the line width each time you change the outer diameter if you want a nicely printed flat disk with no overlaps, zig zag lines or missing lines.

That's interesting. I've definitely had problems printing thin walls (1 line width) on Cura due to this behavior and could not figure it out. Other slicers didn't have the same problem. Trying to make the wall a bit thicker always resulted in other strangeness. I'll have to try the same prints with arachne engine and see how it goes 👍

Apparently alot of the reason for this new release was because of the large request for Mingda profiles, rightfully so. The rock 3 pro is hands down the best printer on the market. I was blown away by how good it was. I've got every great budget printer (ender5 plus, cr10s pro v2, artillery x1 v4, cr6 se etc) and it absolutely blows them all away. Super impressive machine and glad to see it getting a well deserved spot in Cura. Can't wait for the new cura 4.9 cus the 4.8 was packed full of bugs. Thanks Chep for another great video!......and P.S. Chuck please give the Mingda Rock 3 Pro a review. You'll definitely love the printer, truly top notch.

Tried out Cura 4.9, was ok with it till I noticed something out of the ordinary. Was setting up after installing Micro-Swiss direct drive. What I noticed was when printing my extruder temperature was changing. My PETG runs at 240C, that's how I set it. About 2 minutes into the print it went to 260C then after awhile to 255C. I thought I had wxtruder problems. I changed... hotend, main logic board. to no avail. Out of the clear blue I edited the gcode, guess what... it was changing my temperature. So I edited out the changes and its ok. How Come? This was on the Cura XYZ Cube. Any ideas>

I've always thought Cura was more powerful than Prusa Slicer and a bit more organized but god is it slow. Slow to start, slow to slice and memory heavy. No, we don't generate G2 and G3 commands with Arachne. All paths generated by Arachne are still G0 and G1. They're are now only positioned differently and they can vary in line width along a path, so these fill the shape more efficiently.

This new engine looks really promising! Did they optimize the printing order to reduce travels ? I feel like I see some nonsense travels sometimes...
@Crazyates11
@Crazyates11 3 года назад
There are two options you can search for: “Optimize wall printing order” and “Infill travel optimization”
@LenordeFPV
@LenordeFPV 3 года назад
@@Crazyates11 Thank you! I already use both options. But when slicing a cylinder for example, it will start the skirt from one side, then it will travel to another side for the cylinder walls, and finally a third travel for a feature next to the cylinder. All of these travels could be greatly reduced if it starteed from the same point of the circle everytime. On more complex shapes, it is even more obvious to see the nozzle travel from one side to the opposite, then coming back almost next to the first point...
@JelleSpijker
@JelleSpijker 3 года назад
We worked on the algorithms for generating and placing walls with variable line widths. A side result is that these might now be open lines and not closed loops. That could mean that you will see a slight increase in the number of travels. But keep it mind that the total time a printer travels is nothing compared to the time it actually print. So optimizing these moves won't bring that much time reduction. While optimizing wall line placement will bring greater print time reductions.
@LenordeFPV
@LenordeFPV 3 года назад
@@JelleSpijker Thank you for this explanation! I just tried Arachne, and it is awesome for cylindrical parts. Even with these additional travels for open lines, the print time is reduced because the infill is much more efficient. I was pointing out the starting point of a closed loop that is sometimes far away from the last printing head position. The goal would not be to reduce the printing time but rather the impact of oozing/stringing. When it crosses the whole print, it can leave material at an undesired location. My example is very specific, and I'm still not an expert in 3D printing, so I don't know if this case is really an issue. Also, if I understand correctly, it is not possible to "see in the future" and look at the next feature to print before deciding where to start a loop.
@JelleSpijker
@JelleSpijker 3 года назад
Yes, absolutely correct there are more benefits then just a print time reduction. But unfortunately we have to prioritize what we work on and since there are already measures in place to reduce oozing, travel optimization is a bit lower on our backlog. Especially since these types of problems are hard to solve for all scenarios. But these are also the interesting math problems to solve, so no worries we developers will ofcourse try to optimize them anyway.

Dear "CHEP", I have tried the arachne alpha edition, and I appreciate the afforts Ultimaker team made. Specifically the inner walls are clean, without zig-zag. But there is another point: THE SKIN IS ABSORBED IN INNER WALLS IN THE time info preview. Generally is a much better engine because require less acceleration, and less retraction, and the quality and time of the printer are highly impacted. It will not implemented in the 4.9

My ender 3 max has been working great but when I try to print any new or existing projects it will not go to center of bed it wants to print in the home corner. I am not sure if clicked on wrong button or reset something I shouldn't have. Any suggestions would be great.

Did you set the dimensions of the bed in the machine profile of your slicer to match the Max bed?

@@FilamentFriday I figured it out I somehow clicked on origin of center in my printer profile. I unchecked it and now it works. New at this 3d printing stuff so still learning but thanks for the reply.

"It automatically goes into line type" What has yours been going into? Mine has done that for a long time now...

The default was material. But it remembers the last one you visited. It is really more to help us developers. wlwe got a bit tired of asking to switch to line type, when someone reported or asked something. A lot of new user's didn't know you could switch and often shared screenshot that were a bit harder to comprehend, because you didn't see the type of lines.

Since my upgrade to Cura 4.9.1 I have not been able to print anything - nada, zilch, nothing! I have leveled the bed very many times, even bringing the nozzle closer than I usually do. Nothing will stick! Cleaned print bed, used glue. Nothing will stick. It seems that the nozzle is to far above the bed on the first layer. I checked Z offset = 0. Any recommendations or settings I should check? Very frustrating because I was printing fine before.

After further investigation, my problem doesn't seem related to Cura. Just a coincidence that it started at the same time as the new Cura download. Can't print my old files either. It is a mystery to me.

Can't say much more than 'don't worry' at the moment. Cura itself is going to remain open source, free, and usable without an account.

Is it just with me or people are also having a problem which is right at the start of the print, cura sets the temperature back to 0 for both extruder and heatbed. Also I dont have proof but I think it might be causing my printer to jam, the fillament melts up the heatbreak and solidifies there. I didnt have this after I started printing with the SD card and lubricated the fan. Idk if its related yet.

Ciao e possibile sapere Setting for tpu??
@remcoburema7001
@remcoburema7001 3 года назад
You'll have to change the material to TPU in the drop-down menu in the top middle of the screen in 'Prepare' mode. Once the material menu is open, go to 'Generic' and select TPU 95A, or something else applicable (if you know the brand for example). Materials for more specific brands can be downloaded from 'Marketplace' (the button in the top right corner, next to sign in ... you won't need to sign in. Menu may take a while to load. If it doesn't show up, check if it's the right diameter.).

Thanks for the 4.9 beta review. I have installed 4.9 and have a question about the Color Scheme menu. My Color Scheme menu does not show the "Starts" option plus it has two other options which are "Only show top layer" and " Show 5 detailed layers". (These two options are also shown in 4.8) Also, a header at the top of the Color Scheme list says " Compatibility Mode" Anyone have any idea why my Color Scheme menu is different? And if possible, I would like to find out why I only have the vertical scroll bar when I am in the Preview screen. I have never had the horizonal animation bar in 4.8 and now in 4.9 I have researched some threads on this subject but have not had any success. I thought it was because I only had a cpu chip based GPU, but I recently Installed a Nvidia GPU but Cura still doesn't give me the animation option. (Note, I have set up the Nvidia software so Cura uses the Nvidia GPU.)

@johnkemper1581 3 года назад
@@FilamentFriday Maybe. My son gave me the graphics card. It is fairly old, but as far as performance its pretty powerful and has 4 GB of onboard memory. However, it might not support what ever function Cura needs. Do you know what video card is in you system?

@@FilamentFriday I found the setting that was forcing the "Compatibility Mode" I referenced above. Under "Preferences" / "General" there was a setting called "Force layer view compatibility mode" . On my installs of Cura, that line item was selected. I unselected that item in both my 4.8 and 4.9 installs and now I have the horizonal animation bar and all the "Line Type" menus are correct. Yea!

When you select settings you can add the BOTTOM LAYERS option and set it to 0 and/or the TOP LAYERS also. Be careful that the lower or upper layers can support what you are doing though or it may fail, spectacularly ;)

Per default the wall and skin are set to 0 for the modifier. CHEP removed these from the modifier, so it generated them as specified in the global settings.

@remcoburema7001 3 года назад
The naming scheme for Cura and libraries is moslty Greek/Roman mythology. Arachne is named after the myth, where a 'boastful' woman got turned into a spider by the godess of weaving (think it might be Athena) for daring to win(?) in a competition against her.
