Thank you so much! I usually cut out the part of shots where they gopro is dropping into the water but the water was so incredibly flat with perfect cloud reflections that I had to include it - it just look so unreal

It was an adult yep! The fluke on this one had to be at least 10 feet across.

Nah take it slow. Blue whales have been very shy and avoided humans for a very long time. They had good reasons to as well. But they are doing better and better now. And the fact that they are getting closer again nd showing curiosity is a good sign. It shows that they are slowly regaining their trust in us. Give them time. Don't push it.

Its strongly discouraged to touch any whale (especially off the US coasts). The only place I'm aware of where its allowed and initiated by the whales is in Mexico (and even then its only the gray whales). But also yes I am the one that recorded this haha

Propeller maybe! Those tend to be more raised when they scar over though. Its possible they're rake marks from a possible orca attack somewhere in its past because of the spacing and how they look.

@@WMMtravels I think the one nearer the tail is too long for orca. A single extended straight groove. Obviously I wasn't there!

@@guyskillen Yeah for sure! The ones I was referring to were the series of smaller ones more on its back. c: Not super sure what the longer thin ones were from though! we all were wondering about that on the boat since they didn't seem like normal boat strike scarring (if that's what it is of course - maybe it just rubbed up against something)

It is certainly tempting! Though it looks close it was still probably 5 - 6 feet deep. There was only one point where its chin disturbed the surface of the water but it was still probably 4 feet away from the side. We wouldn't have touched it had it been close enough though. Its possible that would have scared/stressed the animal and would have ended this incredibly friendly and rare encounter. It could also be considered marine mammal harassment which does violate some laws.

Same, I would love to be lucky to encounter this whale again one day. It had some recognizable scarring on it (some scrapes on its back and a notch in its fluke) that might make it possible to pick out the individual again should that day come.
