In today's video we show you how we built a DIY spray booth that captures powder from coating. This booth will also help manage overspray and fumes from sprayable paints. This could include cerakote or even spray paint.

White melamine would have saved ya on the cleanup in the future, without having to paint. Like the lazy susan idea and will probably incorporate that into mine for Cerakote.

Yeah we built this thing from as much recycled materials as possible which is why we had to paint but you are absolutely right; melamine would work great for interior walls.

We used the Eastwood gun for many years then stepped up to a Redline. The Eastwood is really decent.

Yeah there's 2 versions. I used the cheapo single voltage one for years and it worked fine, especially for single stage colors. I've never used the dual voltage but I hear it has it's advantages. Are both sold out?

Jake built his powdercoating oven. It's steel framed with galvanized sheet metal over. Insulation between with conventional oven elements and a PID controller.

Just curious, does any of the over spray go through the filter and end up on the fan or wall behind it?

It depends on a few factors: filtration ratings, spray technique and filter condition. Strong fans allow you to run a higher MERV rating filter because it will draw vacuum through the filter. Higher filtration rates means more particles are collected. Filter condition is also very important; if you allow the filter to become too filled up then the fans will struggle and may draw vacuum from around the filter edges or areas not sealed well enough. Lastly, your technique for spraying will effect the rate at which filters fill up. Some people powdercoat with very high output, literal clouds of powder. And while this is effective for many, it does result in a lot more "overspray" which plugs filters faster, and will remain suspended in air until it finds somewhere to go. Lots of factors effect the effectiveness of these basic filtration setups.

Be careful spraying powder directly into an electrical motor like that....pro booths use explosion proof fans for a good reason....boom!

The motors are AC Synchronous, there are no brushes or other things to cause sparks. But still, good advice.

I don't know if that's DIRECTLY into the motor. There is a filter in between. Always wise to be cautious and plan accordingly though.

@@shanesubashe787 just googled , Dan is right… found a link referring to an incident related to a dust fire started in a powder coating shop. I work in an industry with high voltage, dust fire/explosions are a major concern. I’ve seen video of a guy opening a 480v panel, the dust/static electricity exploded and he runs away on fire..he later dies. Of course I’m writing all this because I just finished my own spray booth built with same design and equipment. Now I’m going to re-evaluate my options. A hobby ain’t worth burning down my shop. Dan you have saved my bacon😬

Hey Mattola6, we have shot roughly 20 different components now with this setup; all of which have had excellent dry powder adhesion. We have not ohm tested from the clamp to the substrate yet because it has worked just fine.

what fans did you use? I’ve recently watched your video and built a small powder coating cabinet and I posted it and a gentleman says it shouldn’t have used the fans I’ve used because in my career fire because of spark from the fan what’s your thoughts on that? I just bought the fans from Home Depot

Hi John, these are run of the mill box fans. So brushed center mounted motors. I'll just copy my response to another question in the comments: "" Hey Steve, we haven't seen had any issues with this setup. Now, this is only my experience using my own setup, so it could very well be a potential hazard. It's up to the builder to decide what components to use and filters and the use of the materials. When I spray powder, I don't like to spray large clouds. I take my time and manage material usage and overspray carefully. I would wager excessive materials suspended in air could pose a greater risk of fire. Long story short: I recommend the builder do their research and decide what will work best and be safest for their setup. 🙂🤘"" So it's really up to you whether you're comfortable using this type of fan or not. I've never had an issue but I do use decent filters and clean them often. Plus I don't spray heavy amounts. I'm really cognizant of how much overspray I produce.
