Not as incredible as one might think. It is an old, tried and tested invention. The DHC2 Beaver has been using flaperons since its first flight in 1947. btw the Ju-87 Stuka already used slotted ailerons, that while not real flaperons, did help low-speed characteristics a lot.

Been using flaperons on model planes for 30+ years
@429thunderjet2
@429thunderjet2 2 года назад
@@mrbmp09 yes but these aren't usually what we think of as flaperons are they? Because the drooping ailerons are separate from the actual flaps. When thinking of flaperons I envision one piece, narrow corded, pretty much full length of the wing, mounted slightly below and trailing the wing trailing edge. Like the German storch, kitfox, zenith 701-801 etc. While they provide excellent roll authority otherwise, flaperons at anywhere near full flap setting lose a lot of roll authority. So in a stiff crosswind you can't use much flap deflection. That's why Mike elected not to use flaperons I think. 🤔

@@kittyhawk3831 I certainly hope so! He is scheduled to be at the Garmin booth, along with Flight Chops (Steve Thorne) and Steve's new RV-14. Since today is July 21st and it starts on the 26th, AND he has his AW Certificate (which means the airplane has been flying already and the FAA has sent out an inspector to look it over), I would assume that barring some seriously unforeseen circumstance (which wouldn't have to do with the airplane), he will be at Air Venture.

You’re certainly right about not getting to enjoy how quiet they are, but that quietness is still important. Noise during movement between two objects means either friction or impact is occurring, and if either of those are occurring, wear and damage is also occurring (even if it’s minute). The quieter an assembly is during its movement, the longer it will last before it needs repair.

Being an engineer myself, this series makes me feel so bad about myslef. Every little part has to go through several stages, from the first idea, to the initial design, material chose, stress calculatipn and the thickness required. Watching that assembly on solidworks and realizing it was just one among many others, made me question myself about my skills. This is so much done in such short amount of time. I'm so full of admiration for mike, I have no idea how he does that.

He might be one of those "sleep optional" type people, with how much work he does late at night. Plus, he's probably putting in a lot of his free time into this project, as well as his regular work hours, whereas you're probably only putting in your regular work hours at your job. What I'm trying to say is this: IDK if he works any faster than you do, but he probably puts in more hours per day than you do, and that's enough to explain the difference. When you love your work, it's no longer a job, and I can tell that Mike loves his work.

Hi Mike! I was never really into aviation, until I ran into a random RU-vid video of Draco. I was captivated and sought out anything I could watch. I was heartbroken when you crashed. Now I’ve been watching the Scrappy build since day one. I am truly amazed at your pure engineering talent. I am so excited to see Scrappy finally fly. I am saddened by the fact that I will probably never get to see him in person. But I will be following any adventures you happen to post. If you ever make it to Portland, Oregon know that you have a family of fans. You have inspired my 12 year old son to want to learn to fly (Me as well…) and we are researching that process now. He also thinks he might want to be an aviation engineer as well. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. And for inspiring a whole new generation of pilots.
