Totally humble and down to Earth and will talk to you just like anyone else.. And not to mention totally driven. What an absolute icon in our industry. I wonder if the inspectors all crowd into a van just to take a trip to Mike's hanger and marvel at the engineering and workmanship. Must be tough for them to return to inspecting 30 year old Cessna's after that.

The DAR shows up to look at his build logs. Mike just brings his super computer downstairs and has him watch a playlist of episodes. DAR gets 20 minutes through, signs airworthiness, spends rest of time playing with flap control 😆

Been in aviation most all my life { 74 now } and have never seen flaps or ailerons run that smooth or parts fit that precise.....amazed

Seeing the wings on has been something your fans have been waiting for for such a long time. Scrappy is going to be able to do so many things that other planes of comparable size won't be able to do. Your designs are astonishing and your search for perfection is going to lead to one hell of a plane. I'm sure there are many fans out there who feel as I do. The engineering, design and finish of these mechanical parts is incredible.

This guy is starting to give the Rutan brothers a run for their money. Thankfully there is enough room here for all aviation geniuses.

At first I thought, “That is a ridiculous number of inspection panels.” Of course, now it all makes sense. Let’s see, dual slats, Fowler flaps and flaperons all integrated together. FAA inspector, “Geez, Mike, OK I guess. I mean, geez Mike!”

I think I'm as excited as Mike to see Scrappy fly. My wife said what are you so excited about, I said Mike Patey just released a new Scrappy video.

The enthusiasm emanating from this man (Mike) is very contagious. luckily there is no remedy against that.

Yes. Lots of parts, but still an elegant design! And... you nested new design features within fully functional traditional mechanisms. AND... this is generation one! Epic!!!

Every video makes me do a facepalm and sit in awe of Mike's creativity. Just coming up with this stuff is next level. But then the computer software work, the CNC work, the assembly work and the 12 year old kid that comes out when the first test is over with.... someone is going to owe their life to the capabilities this aircraft has.

The genius of Mike Patey........where unimaginable fantasy and reality become one. Thanks Mike. I thought after the mighty DRACO (one amazing piece of Mike Patey design) met it's demise and the idea of Scrappy was began I thought that no way could Draco ever be topped........good lord have I learned a lesson about not limiting Mike Patey's ability to WOW!!

So, so many heavy pieces/parts adding up. Bushings intermittently used w/minimal rotation would be 80% lighter, last as long w/lube. That big engine might not notice. What a beautiful bird. Cant wait to see her fly. Moving civil aviation ahead in a big step.

As someone who lives somewhat local, I'd love to watch Scrappy fly someday.

This plane is mechanically absurd complex and refined, its an engineers wet dream and you Sir are living it! So amazing to see everything come together.

I'll admit that initially, I wanted you to rebuild Draco before building Scrappy, but I can't imagine a better wild ride than the Scrappy build! That plane is going to be awesome when finished!

Mike I can't wait to see the re-entry heat shield tiles go on. Outstanding. Just outstanding. As far as the FAA inspector being surprised - I'd bet that just about every FAA employee watches Mike's build videos and get just as excited as we do when a new one pops up. They probably drew straws to see who gets to go out and sign it off.

Being an engineer myself, this series makes me feel so bad about myslef. Every little part has to go through several stages, from the first idea, to the initial design, material chose, stress calculatipn and the thickness required. Watching that assembly on solidworks and realizing it was just one among many others, made me question myself about my skills. This is so much done in such short amount of time. I'm so full of admiration for mike, I have no idea how he does that.

Hi Mike! I was never really into aviation, until I ran into a random RU-vid video of Draco. I was captivated and sought out anything I could watch. I was heartbroken when you crashed. Now I’ve been watching the Scrappy build since day one. I am truly amazed at your pure engineering talent. I am so excited to see Scrappy finally fly. I am saddened by the fact that I will probably never get to see him in person. But I will be following any adventures you happen to post. If you ever make it to Portland, Oregon know that you have a family of fans. You have inspired my 12 year old son to want to learn to fly (Me as well…) and we are researching that process now. He also thinks he might want to be an aviation engineer as well. Thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. And for inspiring a whole new generation of pilots.
