Plastic is a lot stronger under compression than you're giving it credit for. Under tension? Absolutely not. Not known for shear strength either, but under compression different plastics can be incredibly resilient.
@richardenrooijen
@richardenrooijen 2 года назад
@Ernest Sipes why is it poor design? the metal parts are broken and bend... but the plastic retainer is still going strong. So perhaps there is nothing wrong with this way of mounting them. I don't know why they didn't use bolts like everybody els does, I really doesn't make sense to me, but it works like intended so it seems.
@davidfence6939
@davidfence6939 2 года назад
@@richardenrooijen working as intended doesn't make it good. Explain why these kinds of vehicles the SKYROCKET in price to repair out of warranty. Honda and Toyota have some issues, but don't enjoy costing an another mortgage to fix like European cars now. Also there's a reason Fiats aren't sold in the States anymore! They're a horrible vehicle and so few are even running in the US anymore. If you have one running it's a unicorn. Again...you can keep the over-engineered European crap.

Love the fisher price plastic teething collars holding up the strut assembly
@nigelcox1451
@nigelcox1451 2 года назад
This is a cheap method employed on a growing number of European cars. The top mount locates the strut, the weight of the vehicle holds it there. Even over a jump, max downward travel of the wheel should not drop the mount out of its location. The top cover just acts as a sort of drop stop, but should not suffer much stress. Make a bit of a clonk over enthusiastic humps though. Interesting to see how the Jeep is using Fiat engineering. In Europe we have a Fiat 500X, which is a clone of the smallest Jeep. We thought the Fiat used the Jeep structure, seems it is the other way around. Probably not a good idea to overstress it with serious off-road jaunts.

I have to agree and disagree at the same time. Funny enough It all mostly depends on trim model - if you pay more for trailhawk trim you will get more robust suspension parts. If you pick up laredo or limited... Well yea it's a mall queen. But even so if you buy TH you have to mod it out of the box ;). If you look at Renegade or Compass that is just very far cousin of Fiat500 (Renegade is redesign Fiat500XL and Compass is just moded renegade platform).

I was working on a 1969 Ford econoline van back in the early 80s. Needed water pump. Going up to the last bolt on the water pump, I thought to myself this was going way too easy for a ford. 5 hours later, with the help of my brother we had to chip away part of the timing case and sneak a hacksaw and saw for 2 hours to cut the last bolt behind the pump. Turned out the stem of the last bolt welded itself to the water pump housing. The few times I have worked on fords have left me with nasty injuries. Haven't touched a ford since then.

I bought a second that had had a whack in the front end and had been repaired. The front alignment was dodgy and I took it to a well known suspension business who thoroughly sorted out the problem and in the process they checked the steering rack. The female part which accepts the tie rod in end had massive crack in it presumably from the aforementioned whack. I could have been in real trouble if it had given way at high speed.

That subframe blocking the control arm front bolt is straight up a VW design. Wife’s 2013 VW 2.0 Turbo beetle with DSG transmission not only required the subframe loosened , but the engine to transmission dog bone mount removed to give the sub frame enough downward movement and the bolt enough front clearance by swinging the transmission forward to pull the bolt out. Otherwise it would hit the tranny pan. Furthermore, that VW did not have any camber adjustment so, if you miscentered the subframe upon retightening, your camber could be permanently messed up....unless you paid an alignment shop to realign the subframe via a special alignment. $$$.

Looks like the customer left you a picnic lunch in the back. My dad made moon shine when I was a kid and we lived in the middle east. He would include a bottle in the car for the guys to drink when he needed work done. Always had to tell them to fix the car first. 👀

The way the strut is held up is clever, would need to be a very strong polymer to remain elastic but also retain shape for my tastes. But still, really cool solution.

That front suspension and steering is very much like a late 80s early 90s WV

I can see the explanation to a customer. Well you see I had to take the car half way apart to get one bolt out to change a single part then put it all back together fixed. also seems like engineers build a car around a single fastener.

our shop just did struts like that on an old Saturn, none of us had ever seen that 2 piece plastic lock. you need the inner tie rod tool that looks like a muffler clamp, its got teeth on both sides to grip and it has a 3/8 dive on it, thats all i use now on inners i can't get a wrench on.

I know this is the body shop's problem, but I wonder if the frame is bent too?

Imagine that, breaking a "Jeep" by running it off the road. I remember when breaking a Jeep was hard to do.

“Going very easily!”: famous last words, indeed. In my ERs, anyone saying how ‘quiet’ that shift was going was eligible for a head slap. NEVER challenge ‘worse’, as it will then go to hell.
