Honestly I wasn't too jazzed about the fluid ABIs at first, but now that Tasha's is out and I can actually read how they wrote it, I see they emphasized that not every dwarf has that +2 Con for example, only dwarf adventurers. I was all for swapping out cultural stuff or other things you would learn, but it didn't make sense to me to swap out genetic stuff just because you never met your parents or whatever. Well, knowing say every elf NPC doesn't have a +2 to Dex from their lineage, it just so happens that most elf adventurers get that +2 edge, now it makes a LOT more sense to be able swap it. Idk why but before the release I had the feeling the official wording would change my mind.

Yeah, on the one hand, saying all Orcs are strong and tough would seem to make a lot of sense. And that would be true even if they were raised by humans. I want to make a custom dragonborn where one parent was a dragon and one was a kobald. He gets +2 to constitution and +1 to strength. He has the breath weapon of his draconic heritage but the pact tactics of a kobald. The back story for this is "There was a female dragon who was doted on by an army of kobolds. They took care of her every need and want to such a point that she felt an emotion akin to love for the hard working little buggers. So enamoured by their constant dotting she she began to mate with them, however she never took care of the children she sired due to how the kobolds took care of her every want and need, including her own children's wants and needs to keep her mind at ease. The children had the constitution of a dragon and a bit of their strength too but were bigger then kobolds and thus more hard working as they took on the teachings of the kobolds to serve their mother. Not all the dragonborn half-breeds stayed with the mother dragon or the kobold brood. They found new ways to take care of their mother, some dipping into science as artificers, some into magic as wizards, some into faith like clerics or some that learned how to weave magic into their words. others mastered their strength to fight to protect their mother dragon from harm or hunt for supplies as rangers." i think this would make an amazing story for a dragonborn starting out. though i doubt i can just give a dragonborn darkvision out the gate.

I have already created my own fixes for redundant armor and weapon proficiency given by your race. You may choose to either receive Proficiency in your races weapons, or you can get +1 on attacks with 1 of them . If your class provides Light and Medium armor proficiency, the race instead gives you the Medium Armor Mastery feat instead. I thought about giving expertise on 1 weapon instead of the proficiency in all, but I felt that it would unbalance the game, especially at upper levels, since there is no other way to get expertise on a weapon that I know of, but a flat +1 bonus with 1 weapon for race seemed manageable and fair. Medium Armor Mastery is a good feat, removing some of the penalties of Medium armor, but not overpowered, and may not be useful for every character if they want to stick with Light armor. If they plan to move toward Heavy armor as fast as they can, it can still help them until they can afford it.

Racial abilities are tied to your race. No backstory can change your race, because you dont become more attracted (CHA) by living with beautiful creatures, or healthier (CON) by living with dwarfs, etc. I think it should therefore be used by DMs (only) to create variations of races, like the Elf variants listed under high elf, and then make it available to players to prevent munchkins.

Then at least allow them to split the +2 just like the human variant forces you to do. That's why allowing you to swap ability scores on existing races, even as a variant rule, still doesn't allow you a +3 in a stat. Ok, the customizing origin is WAY better than the custom lineage. I get that the custom lineage can be useful for certain races, but when thinking about elves, dwarves or dragonborns, just to name a few, you will always have a WORSE race in the end. Some races may fit for this option though. Now, the custom origin is a whole different story. You can change the ASI, proficiencies and language, but you don't automatically lose EVERY SINGLE race trait. And THIS is what makes this the better option. To this date, the new sourcebook VRGTR got the Lineage system, which is a better option as the custom lineage, because, even if you lose your original racial traits, you get new racial traits in exchange. (Not just a single trait of your choice)

I like the principle of being able to swap out proficiencies from your race, but as soon as you pointed out that a dwarf could end up with 7 tools (9 if you count the ones they could get from background), I thought it could end up being a bit silly. When you look at what the tool proficiencies offer according to XGE, they're actually pretty good. I'd argue they're equivalent to about half a skill (maybe a tad more). I'd probably limit the number of swaps to 2 or 3. TL;DR - I'm a bit sour about my vuman artificer 'wasting' their free feat on Skilled for tool proficiencies.

Well, now I can officially fix my Kobold. -4 is way too severe a detriment to give a playable race. I'd cut it to a -2 STR instead of the -4 STR. I'd give the option to keep sunlight sensitivity and in doing so upgrade to enhanced darkvision. Conversely, I could keep regular darkvision and drop sunlight sensitivity for a kobold hatched and raised on the surface. Replace the beg ability with the dungeon delver feat, since traps are kind of a kobold's bread and butter, and also give them proficiency in one of the tools to create said traps.

I just wished that WOTC would give us ways of incorporating large PCs into D&D. For example, I hate that for races such as Minotaurs and Centaurs that they just don't classify them as large and instead get the "You count as large in regards to carrying capacity and weight". I understand that, from a mechanical standpoint, it wouldn't be viable. Too many bonuses come from being large and there is no way to really counteract that. But damnit, I have been wanting to make Zun-Zun the Ogre Barbarian for a while now and don't want to make him medium lol. I mean sure, I could work with the DM to allow for the same benefit as the other races that are usually large and get the "You count as large" spiel, but its just not the same.

Unless the book does not tell us how to make our own race; I mean not dwarf, human, elf, etc but a race of the player's creation. I see it as a very half-hearted attempt to be an extension of the DMG since I presume a lot of groups just homebrew this thing anyway.

This seems like the laziest way they could possibly have done this. They didn't even try to balance it just essentially said "just house rule it lol". It's rather disappointing. Not to mention how weird it is both attributes can be switched out. This isn't like the barely different human races, it's more like comparing a fennec to an arctic fox. Some of them are so different they're not even able to procreate and edge on different species. It makes it really strange to be able to completely swap out scores like that.

I think this is a very cool feature, but I do agree that Elves and Dwarves get to take advantage of this way more than other races. Not that balances races is really a thing in 5E anyways, but I do feel like this feature would be received better if the original race designs had been set up with custom origins in mind. Oh well. It's optional.

My only gripe i've ever had about this is that all it makes me see is mountain dwarf casters for armor and weapon profs you wouldn't normally have, because i'm used to playing with min-maxers. I feel like it should have just been like the custom lineage and forced everyone to take a +2 +1.

Min maxers mindset, can easilybe dealt with by a like minded dm.... oh y'all want too meta/min max... thats fine, you just enabled hard-core mode/new game plus... The a.i./dm is now 100% aware of your stats and abilities, and is now trying to flat out make you fail

@theodorehunter4765 3 года назад
@@joshuaarnaud993 Your first solution is to "tailor the game" such that it is only harder for the one min-maxxer. As an experienced DM, I know that usually doesn't work. Either the min-maxxer feels picked on (if you take it too far) or they end up feeling like the main protagonist because without them, the extra strong monsters you are throwing at the party would decimate them. Your second solution is to veto the min-max, which is literally the solution of the OP.
@danlehman4646
@danlehman4646 3 года назад
That was my thought as well. It should have been turned to a +2, +1 ability score system with a "point buy" style setup where you get say 10 points to spend. Skill prof is 3 points, Darkvision is 2 points, tool/languange prof is 1 point, etc. (Just picked arbitrary numbers for this example, don't look into it.)

This is unclear in the text, but I don’t think you are supposed to be able to replace each weapon proficiency from being a high elf with a tool, for a total of 4 tool proficiencies. I think it’s intended for you to replace all 4 for 1 tool proficiency because if your race gave you proficiency in martial weapons it wouldn’t be expected that you could replace the proficiencies of each weapon with a tool. I think it would work like a group.
@LordOfDarkness8296
@LordOfDarkness8296 3 года назад
I think the text is quite clear. "Some races and subraces grant proficiencies. These proficiencies are... You can replaces EACH of those proficiencies with a different one of your choice." It doesn't say all of those proficiencies. It says each of those proficiencies.
@LordOfDarkness8296

Add in the fact that the table includes simple weapons and martial weapons SEPARATELY should tell you that you can replace the proficiencies separately

Ultimately I think this will open the door to letting them make other races and subraces with a bit more freedom since they won't really have to worry about where the racial bonuses go as much as they use to. And that's pretty great in my opinion. My biggest gripe with 5e was always the lack of races in 'official' material
