Hi I'm Brian with Next Level Homestead. If this is your first time here... welcome! I'm glad you're here! If you're a longtime friend, welcome back!!
For most of my life I was a city boy, gardening in the suburbs. I was the first generation in my family to not grow up on a farm and somehow it was still there inside me. So now my wife Emilie, son Noah and I have moved to a small farm (at least it will be) and we're documenting our journey on this channel. Building gardens and chicken coops, buying a dairy cow and who knows what else lies in store. But we can't wait to take you with us!

One method I've used to get small, young creatures used to me is to just sit in the enclosure, and let them come up to you. It will take time. But their curiosity will eventually get the better of them. I'm not exactly sure why it works, but I think it's because they interpret a large, tall 'creature' (us) as threatening. Getting down to their level seems to help a lot.

The breeder suggested that too. We will have to try it

I foster cats and this is what I do with my newbies. Just grab my phone or a book and just hang out with them until they are comfortable with me. Also helps I feed them 😊
@lindasmashnuk
@lindasmashnuk 2 месяца назад
To start with, do NOT look them in the eyes...it is threatening to them, even sit with your back to them so they can sneak up and sniff you.
@Debra309
@Debra309 2 месяца назад
@@lindasmashnuk 100% agree. When I first got sheep, I quietly sat low in a beach chair near where they fed. I did not talk to them, just sat. Never reached out in an attempted to pet the top of their head as sheep are very skittish. It took a week or two of sitting quietly before they started feeling comfortable. Once I gained their trust, I slowly reach under their chin and beside their cheeks for a scratch. Wasn’t too long after that I was brushing them, (hair sheep). Probably didn’t hurt knowing I was the one providing food twice a day, too. Lol
@davinasquirrel7672
@davinasquirrel7672 2 месяца назад
I concur, this is the way to get critters to not be afraid of you. Works for cats, chickens, all sorts. Particularly any prey animal (cats are both predator and prey). I agree with not looking directly at them, this is a predator move and triggers prey fear. After a while, you can talk softly, but never make any sudden moves. For cats I also allow them to have a long sniff interrogation before I slowly give them a stroke on the cheek. For chickens, I tend to give them hand feeding when confident enough. And yes, the sitting down part is often a really good way for them to be less afraid, particularly for smaller animals.

When I saw all those snails, I was wondering if they would be safe for your chickens to eat. And this is what I found on the Internet: "Yes, chickens can eat snails. They are omnivores and will often consume insects, worms, snails, and even small rodents as part of their natural diet. However, it's essential to ensure that the snails are not contaminated with pesticides or other harmful substances before feeding them to chickens."

I follow a younger couple in Alaska who live largely off the grid who have a bunch of chickens for eggs and meat. They feed their chickens the butchering scraps from caribou, and moose, and let them pick the the fish carcasses, (mostly salmon) clean after filleting them. The chickens devour them all with gusto!. I'm sure they must be producing the best ever eggs!

I didn't realize your homestead was so big. The first few videos I watched were centered around your tiered garden beds and the tomato challenge. You have such a relaxed setting for Bella and Daisy and now your boys. And that in turn must be refreshing to wake up to. Hope you continue to get well so you can enjoy it all. God bless you all.❤🙏🇨🇦

Excellent choice. I have sheep. When friends show an interest in introducing sheep into their homestead, I always encourage starting off with two male lambs. Test the waters so to speak and see if sheep are the right fit. If so, bring in a ewe. If not, you will have lamb chops in a few months.

Great camera work Emily - getting the sheep out of the car without re injuring his leg would have been impossible without your help. Oh they are SO cute and I love that Bella is sort of familiar to them - that's great; less stress for everyone. And she doesn't seem bothered by them either - hopefully she'll begin to see them as her charges and protecting them. Great name choices too. Hooray for more freedom for Daisy too. And a terrific idea to have them all share the corral in a safe way while they get to know one another. Your little farm is rapidly changing and growing into the vision you designed. And the farm fam is growing along with it. Cow, lambs, chickens, rabbits, cat, dog, and who knows what's next! :D Glad to see your snail population drop though. Those thing must have their purpose but ick. Hooray for you being right about your knee. Sometimes stuff gets tweaked and caring for the injury ourselves works fine. So happy to hear that your knee is better, Brian! As we age, we adapt. It's simply a fact of life. 🙂You'll love having ceiling fans. We have one in almost every room, and I absolutely couldn't live here without them. Also, I feel you on the snails! Ugh! But so pleased to see all the other happy beasties at your place (well, maybe not the lambs just yet). ❤

Hi Brian and family. I recently came across your channel and my crazy self binged all the videos from the beginning. Even though our weather is very different, your style of videos really got me hooked… Real and relatable. I live in an apartment 🇨🇦 but dreaming of the day i can buy land and start my homestead. Thanks for sharing your homestead with us. Now i am caught up. Happy to see the cuteness’s 🐑 😂. Looking forward to the next video. Stay safe.

Hi Brian. Glad your better. Maybe the lambs will get used to everyone more if when anyone has time they can sit by them and talk to them. I think Ollie and Otis might calm down more. I can see Bella doesn't phase them at all. Like you said they're use to seeing that kind of dog. Now they have to get use to seeing you all. Daisy seemed really happy to explore the whole pasture without being tethered. I'm glad Scar is still there. Hope everything works out with the lambs.😊
