I grew up with a grandfather who owned a lumbermill as a young man and cut and hauled lumber with his brother using mules and skids to pull the logs out of the woods. Later, after his brother lost his leg in a horrible mill accident, he built new houses from scratch. My grandfather would draw a plan on a paper grocery sack and then take 2x4s and frame a home on cement blocks I would help mix the bonding cement for. He gave me my first hammer at 8, after he taught me to drive his Ford 1949 F1 half ton. This was 1960. Watching this is like watching my Daddy Ben work a problem out just because something old is valuable to "some" of us. Thank you.

When I was a teenager, I got a 62 Saab 96 running from 2 different cars. The one i fixed looked a lot like the one you rescued. That car had a 2 cycle 3 cylinder engine. I am 64 years old so that tells you how long it's been. I wish I had that car back 55 miles a gallon. My grandpa tried to give me his Saab 95, I think, that was the station wagon type. It was parked out back beside his garage for years. He proudly gave me the keys, I unlocked the door, hopped into the driver's seat and immediately fell all the way to the ground! The unibody was rusted completely away. It was useless. but I was able to pull the engine out of that to put in my 62. Lot's of memories of that car.

Old 3 cylinder 2 stroke Saabs were great point to point racing cars! Tremendous Torque for hill climbing! Had one for years a '58. They would overheat if they sat since the water pump only pumped when it was moving. You could put any kind of oil in the tank with the gas! Fun Car!

@@zw5509 Not true. As long as the engine was turning , so was the water pump on both the 1st and 2nd generation 2 stroke SAABs. 1st generation the water pump was the back half of the generator, so one pully on the front drove both the generator, and the water pump

That car does indeed have a V-4 engine in it. It is a later model SAAB 96. Earlier models had a 2-stroke inline 3 cylinder engine. I know...my family had two of them back in the late 60s-early 70s. One thing that may surprise you is the free-wheeling feature of the transmission. It was a great fuel saver and reduced engine wear by a considerable amount. Great car to drive and it has a full underside panel useful for keeping precipitation out of the engine bay.

You are correct but forgot the dual roll bars in the pillars , the crafty method of raising the back seat squab for children , the method of releasing the back seat back , the hole for skis , the through ventilation system and the tubular anchor for the seat belts, the gear shift on the steering column , not to mention the forward tilting bonnet ( hood for you yanks) in case the safety catch failed , brakes power assisted .both mine were red ., l last one 1973 . Fantastic rally car. SAAB - SVENSKA AEROBOTAN hence rumour they were made by aeronautical engineers from bits of saab viggan fighter jet .

Cody's comment at the end resonated with me. He said at first, he was skeptical whether or not the car was actually going to come out of the trees. He didn't know how it was going to work but kept chipping away at it and finally it came. Seems like that's the story of all great challenges. We know what we want the outcome to be but don't know how it will play out. It seems the key is to keep working faithfully, doesn't it? We aren't required to know how we will get there but we are required to do the work and persevere.

We know what the outcome should be, the rest of the work is getting it there. I'v got a few of those going myself. It's what we learn while doing it that is lifes take away, consciousness is continuous. Bless be: no matter how mundane there is the take away, our learning is permanent; becomes part of our being, goes with. I mourne the tree, go have lunch and think. You are plotting the death of a living thing. Think just how to use your saw to loose the wheel. You did right. Oh go away life was just fine before reasons unkown motivated death of a living thing.

A little more than 30 years ago my brother and I had gotten a contract from a bank to clean up a foreclosed property of the abandoned vehicles the previous owner had left there. There were 9 heavy trucks and 4 light trucks and vans and 23 cars one of which was one of those old SAAB’s a rust bucket but otherwise identical to that one right down to the color and V4 engine. The previous owner had built a driveway behind it that was about 4 ft higher than the ground where the car was and it had a steep embankment (about a 70 degree slope) that was about a foot away from the cars bumper and a swamp started about 3 ft from the other bumper. When we got it about half way up the slope, something under the car got snagged on something and proceeded to pull the bottom of the car in half so the roof was all that was holding the car in 1 piece. It suddenly came free from whatever it was snagged on and the rear half of the car twisted up on the driver side to about a 45 degree angle which popped the rear window out of the car sending it flying through the air for about 20 ft and landing on a pile of bowling ball sized rocks with sharp points and jagged edges on them. Somehow the window didn’t break. We pulled the car the rest of the way up to level ground where the rear floor section snagged into the gravel and folded it up even more at the rear bumper until it folded it forward onto the front section of the car. To load the sections on the trailer to haul them out we just cut the A pillars at the windshield and winched each piece onto the trailer separately. We did save 3 of the heavy trucks and 2 of the other cars for ourselves, sold 4 cars, and 1 van and light truck, had 1 van and 3 cars stolen one night, and we scrapped or parted out the rest. I could tell about the adventures of the rest of that property cleanup but it would be the size of a humor novel, but it was hilarious at least once per vehicle other than the ones that were stolen, and definitely proved to be an adventure. For example me riding over ruts, boulders and logs pumping a squeeze ball to keep gas going to keep it running while on the front fender on a 47 Studebaker Dump truck wrapped around the turn signal canister like it was a saddle horn during a rodeo while my brother drove it out (fuel line was too short to reach the cab). He had hooked the fuel line to the input of the fuel pump instead of directly to the carburetor and I didn’t pay attention to that fact because if I stopped pumping it the truck would stall out after about 5 seconds because the fuel pump didn’t work. He hit a log hard enough to blow out the front tire which rang my chimes on the turn signal so I quit pumping the squeeze ball only to find the trucks fuel pump had started working. Any bull rider in a rodeo would have been proud to have made such a ride.

I seen a picture (I think from the 90's) of a bicycle that was chained to a tree by a young man before He went off to fight in WWII never to return. It was about 3 feet off the ground, completely one with the tree.

I haven't ever seen a SAAB like that either. Though I am no fan of SAAB, there can't be that many of those left, and I am a sucker for the oddballs that you don't see everyday. I have also never seen trees grown up though a car to that degree. This one is definitely a unique challenge, but one that it is certainly worth attempting. That car has definitely been there at least forty years, and probably longer that that. This is certainly one that you can prove is not a fake, lol.

This was interesting. I did a total restoration of one of these Saabs back in 1987 , mine was a 1971 this one is a 67 or 68 the 69 had blinkers on the front fenders. 67 was the firts year for the V4 engine. Good luck with the restoration.

I had this type of car in Sweden as my first car. The SAAB V4 is not overpowered in any way, but it was fun to drive. The free wheel made the car different from other cars in a good way. It was also a very good car in wintertime.

Wow, I think I've seen this particular vehicle on some urbex/abandoned car page before, it was so unique how the bumper became one with the tree, it was like a natural art installation. When I've seen it, I thought that poor Saab is probably gonna rot there forever in peace, nobody's gonna bother to cut out all those trees for a weird, crumpled wreck of a car... but you did! Amazing job! I hope the car is saveable, though the trees and time probably did a bit too much damage... it's gonna be a lot of work for sure. But that car was a rally legend, I bet it'll be fun to drive once it's finished.

I've been through this. The most direct method is to top the tree and then cut it again, at, or below ground level. It is miserable work but it does allow for a speedier removal of the vehicle. Then it's just a matter of reducing the wood that's left attached to the vehicle, which always seems far easier once the vehicle is back at the shop.

Yep, it’s actually a Ford V-4 engine with a 4 speed manual on the column and front wheel drive. Grew up with one of these ‘68 SAAB 96’s and spent countless hours working on it with my dad. Very cool car that got great gas mileage and was terrific in the snow, not fun to get parts for though. Can’t tell you how many of those tail light assemblies we went through, they stick out and they’re the first thing that gets hit in the parking lot!
@hotwheelsbob2000
@hotwheelsbob2000 2 года назад
That is the same drivetrain that was used in the 1962 Mustang prototype. I always wanted to get a V4, 4 speed out of a Saab and build the Mustang 2 seater around it.
@mjg263
@mjg263 2 года назад
@@hotwheelsbob2000 that would’ve been awesome! I think it was a big mistake not to bring that engine to the US. Imagine what a hot seller an economical well built V-4 would have been at the dawn of the compact car era when the Japanese took over the car market.
