I planted daffodils around the garden border as a vole deterrent. That hasn’t worked perfectly, but I think it helps. Every year, the daffodils flop over after blooming, and this takes up precious garden space. I usually tie them up to make the garden tidier and to get them out of the way, but after researching this year, I read you shouldn’t do that because it keeps the sun off the leaves and prevents the process of feeding the bulbs. Of course, I’ve read not to cut the leaves off because of the same reason. Then I read of someone who cuts her daffodils back about halfway and has no problems with flowering the next year. So, I decided to give that a try and reclaim my garden space. I’ve tied the daffodils in years past and had no flowering problems, and it takes a lot of time and string to tie each bundle. I have a lot of daffodils. Cutting them takes less time, looks neater, and I hope leaves enough of the plant to collect from the sun. I hope it works and doesn’t harm the plants. They’ve been without flowers for a month or so before cutting, so I’m hoping they’ve been fed a good amount already. I hope to see good results next February when those beautiful yellow flowers burst into the cold winter air declaring Spring is coming!
