Our apprentice Jesper is making a bent lamination chair as a school project. It is inspired by the "Rope Lounger Chair" made by Lignum: • Making a Rope Lounger ...
However we use a different method for ripping the bent lamination into two pieces. Instead of using a skilsaw we use a ripping blade in the spindle moulder.
We use a shop-made plywood ring fence (with a sheet of plastic as a cover for safety) and a 250mm (10") Z12 ripping blade @ 6000rpm.
We removed all but one wheel on the power feeder in order to be able to follow the curves of the lamination while sawing. Feed rate 2m (7') /minute. Depth of cut 10mm (3/8") per pass.
We sawed until it was roughly 15mm (9/16") material left and cut the rest with a hand saw. The wheel of the power feeder was located above this area to make sure that pressure was not exercised right above the blade.
