“I Just Died In Your Arms” was Cutting Crew’s debut single coming off their first album with Virgin Records and would go on to become the group’s biggest hit.

The song was written by lead singer Nick Van Eede who has a very unique voice which we’ll explore in more detail as we also look at his vocal type.

Great track and vocal analysis Ken. Love these, think I’ve watched most of them now. I wanted to let you know that what you said at the end really struck a chord with me. Ive just released a song all about what you’ve said called “Too Many Songs.” Which laments the days of writing with depth, emotion and meaning. @9:25 I like it when you point out the little things like that. It brings them "down to earth" a little, makes them more real. I find I tend to subconsciously assume that "the pros don't make mistakes." Hearing some of these things in songs that are absolute classics helps inspire confidence!

That song is a bona fide classic, the embodiment of 80s pop! 🙂 I knew that the Nick van Eede is from England, but you can really hear it in that isolated track here and there. This is indeed a fantastic song, and the guitar playing is just awesome, so memorable. You won't hear hit songs with that much lead guitar anymore. Guitaris Kevin MacMichael worked with Robert Plant after he left Cutting Crew.

The staccato delivery matches that part of the rhythm. I bet cover versions miss this essential part of the song. Singers usually want to show their chops rather than sing what's proper for the song. I don't sing it staccato either, for the record. Love this song. "I've been in love before" is another great song by them.

i sing this song and i don't do the staccato either.. not a fan of staccato hard onset singing.. and 99.99% of the audience doesn't care anyway.. only musicians care but they don't count ;)

Yes Cutting Crew are British. You can really hear it in a couple of their other songs. One For The Mockingbird is a good example of that.

Also, there’s a reason that much of the music I listen to is not very recent. The newest I listen to is stuff like John Legend, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars. Most of today’s music doesn’t have the soul and passion that even stuff in the 90’s had. Back then people actually had talent. Nowadays everything is auto tuned to the point of sounding more like a robot.

Totally agreed, Ken. Better a diamond with a flaw, than a pebble without. These songs and artists are diamonds, while today's seem but pebbles. They may be perfectly rounded, but lifeless and dull in comparison. I tend to like those airy vocals because I can do a much better job imitating them. Great tune. It would be interesting to hear some more of these '80s pop tracks.
