Yes, when measured entanglement is broken...but aren't there 'strong' and 'weak' measurements? If you use a strong method of measurement, you derive the information, but degrade the level of entanglement so that it breaks. I'm sure I read, though, that by using weak measurements, you don't get as much information , but you also don't degrade the entanglement to the same level, and the reversibility factor of the pairing is high.... Pretty sure I read an article about there being a 'sweet spot' of measurement that allows the pairing to remain entangled afterwards. Am I crazy?

Just some things to clarify: The San-Ti don't understand human deception. The way I've understood it is that the San-Ti communicate by sharing all of their thoughts with each other (between two individuals or more) in real-time, so there is no room for deception. As for the Sophons, the San-Ti were able to send it to Earth at light-speed since it's a photon, that's why it's already there and why the property of quantum entanglement is important so that the paired Sophon in their homeworld is also updated in real-time.

The fibers cut is so clean that even if it’s cut, they can recover the data. That was the logic in the book that wasn’t covered too much in the show

In the Chinese version of the show they are taking dozens of hard drives, some intact, some sliced. And in properly setup data storage there's redundancy and many disks can fail before you start actually losing data.

The nanofiber trap has always been a bit of a plot contrivance, as in all versions it would have been trivially easy for the drives to have been crushed, set aflame, or sunk into the sea and been irreparably damaged. The TV show also added (and clumsily resolved) the question of encryption. Granted, it does make for a very visually impactful scene... If I were editing the book, I'd have suggested that the nanofibers could be designed to only cut or interact with living cells, allowing them to leave the boat entirely intact sans human life. Make them from a nano material that only physically interacts with a type of protein that human cell walls were made from. Or have them coated in a deadly neurotoxin but have them lose the ability to actually cut things. It's already magical sci-fi material so it could have done whatever Cixin Liu wanted, but still resolved a few plot holes along the way.

I don’t think this is a spoiler, but everything you mentioned about the sophon is explored in the book. I don't think Clarence necessary had a hunch about the countdown not coming. Mainly he was working under the assumption that the countdown reaching 0 doesn't kill you by itself. So far all the victims either ended things by themselves (like Vera) or were killed by someone whose presence was erased (like with Jack). Clarence probably assumed that he could try to prevent Auggie's death even after the countdown ended.

I have read the book, at it leans into the String Theory and extra dimensions heavily. Also this earlier subplot “science is wrong, no experiments on colliders show proper results” also stems from the crisis in string theory and high energy physics at the time. The book was written in the early 2000s. SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK BELOW In the book they tried to unfold a proton and there happened to be a civilization inside, because inner complexity and size of a 10-dimensional proton are immense. They inadvertently destroyed this civilization. That civilization, in the process of dying, tried to burn Trisolaris using unfolded proton as a lens. Also they put a large eye on display in their atmosphere, scaring the San TI (Trisolaris). In the TV series the eye in the sky appeared on Earth instead. As they unfold the proton’s dimensions, it keeps growing in size with every new dimension unfolded. It’s like when we’re talking about that our DNA in every cell is 6 feet in length, or how other things inside our body can be wrapped around the Earths, but they’re folded and quire compact. I would love to see you reacting to the book, reading in chapters. Description from the book of how sophon circuitry worked: “The principles governing micro-scale integrated circuits were completely different from those of conventional circuits, as the base material wasn’t made of atoms, but matter from a single proton. The “p-n junctions” of the circuits were formed by twisting the strong nuclear forces locally on the surface of the proton plane, and the conducting lines were made of mesons that could transmit the nuclear force. Because the surface area for the circuit was extremely large, the circuits were also very large. The circuit lines were as thick as hairs, and an observer close enough could see them with the naked eye.” I commented one of the science misses in the book: Not realistic at all. Even if we forget about dubious dimension unfolding thing. There are fundamental laws that imply lower energy limit of every computation, of every bit stored. A supercomputer would have to weigh more than a proton and radiate a lot of heat, requiring external energy. It’s called Landauer principle. You cannot put a supercomputer inside a proton and expect it to have a mass of a proton, radiate like a proton, interact like a proton Also nothing allows faster than light communication, even quantum entanglement. You cannot send messages with it. It was introduced for convenience of the plot. In real life, every communication would be limited by the same delay Ye Wenje dealt with. I’d probably created a Black Hole lmao In the book Sophons cannot hack every computer or cause complex hallucinations. They can only mess with the colliding particles and create the countdown on retinas, by creating flashes similar to how radiation can expose film. AI inside of Sophons was to mess with the colliders. Entanglement for spying. They’re dual-purpose. Evans talked to the San-Ti through microphone.

"Lord" is not an AI. All the communication humanity had wasn't with the fleet but with San-Ti who stayed on a planet. Space fleet is just a tiny part of their civilization. Remember, there was a San-Ti pacifist who answered first to Ye's message. It's cool that they're very different and has their own characters (actually it's well shown in a book, there're a lot of scenes from San-Ti planet, where they have talks and discussions and different opinions and in later books even different factions). So Liu Cixin needed some plot armour to enable San-Ti to communicate with Earth instantly thus the entanglement concept. P.S. Sophon woman explained that Sophops arrived to Earth only a few years ago, before that, they've had an old-school communication with humanity. Also, there's a good reason not to communicate old-school way (not to broadcast so much, so to speak), which is described in second book and I hope we'll see that in Season 2.

I think the writers may have confused ‘quantum decryption’ with ‘quantum-resistant encryption’. My headcanon is that the characters weren’t actually trying to break the encryption using quantum computers. They were just using the word ‘quantum’ as shorthand for qualifying how quantum-resistant the algorithm was which was used to encode the data.

I do respect the fact that you're completely unable to accept there is a live alien who's using the sophons to communicate with them due to the fact you absolutely do not accept quantum entanglement as a form of data transfer. There is a possible (though very unlikely) loophole to overcome the no-signaling theorem in quantum mechanics. If there were a tiny closed time-like curve described by P-CTC model, it can be used to implement a projection operator without the probability of failure, which in turn could enable signaling via entanglement.

So the idea is that even if the drive got sliced, most if not all of the data would be retrievable since the cut would be very thin. They do acknowledge the gamble nature of it in the book, but it was the best way to retrieve the data and not give them time to destroy it.

@telfer3388
@telfer3388 4 месяца назад
The thin clean slice part i get. But then they show the ship practically desintegrate on the shore and colapse on itself. thousands of tons of fuel ignite and the whole thing is just a huge bon fire. So the disk could burn, melt, or be crushed by huge steal construction piesces of the ship falling on it. It was below the deck so it was covered with hundreds of tons of steal by the end. There are so many negative outcomes of this strategy that it becomes hard to suspend disbelief that they actually managed to recover the disk. IT would be more logical if they show the general ship structure intact in the end. Like it;s been said in the video. The effect of a nanofiber cut could be that just after the cut the steal could "reweld itself because of the thinnes of the cut, the friction and the mass etc. So everybody on board would die, a lot of things would be damaged inside the decks ,but the ship itself would not fly apart like that. That way i could begin to believe that there is a posiibility that the disk is recoverable. But the way the scene played out, i just have to conclude that the disk survived by being put inside a case made of plot armour. And that never is a good thing for a script to relay on. i read the books couple of year back so i dont rmemeber if the ship collapsed like that in the book. If it did then it;s on Liu Cixin. But if not it means the added that bit for dramatic effect creating a huge plot hole in the process.

We don't know enough, and even if we did, it's not a terrible crime for a show to take a few liberties. There are a multitude of examples in the sordid history of colonialism where the technological advantage is the only explanation for the absurd disparity in power. Remember technology is not only the gadgets like guns, armour and steel swords, it also includes training, tactics, strategy, administrative systems, logistics etc. Good examples include how the Portuguese dominated in the East based entirely on the mastery of their little ships with cannons. The most stark example I know of almost defies belief, the battle of Cajamarca, where Pizarro's ambush by 168 men utterley defeated Atuahalpa's 7000 strong retinue (armed only with ceremonial axes), and chased away an even larger army camped outside, due to the shock. The Spaniards lost one slave and one other injury. Crucially they only had a handful of cannon and arquebuses, but the ambush, cavalry charge, guns, armour, toledo steel swords and shields, pikes etc all were totally foreign to the Incans. The Spaniards were literally pissing themselves in fear due to how outnumbered they were before the battle, but they were also veterans of pike and shot warfare in Europe which is incredibly brutal and requires extensive drilling, so in the end it was one of the most one sided battles in history. Edit: Regarding the San-Ti "starting over" unfortunately this is a major area where the rushed series falls down compared to the books. They should have spent at least one more episode expanding on the game and using it to show the audience just how bad it is on their world, and just how far they have to start over sometimes, and a bit of how advanced they get. They could have spent a few minutes more on the syzergy scene to depict that better. They kind of wasted the game and made it almost pointless to the plot. Do you feel convinced to betray your race and join a terrorist cult to help aliens conquer your world, on the basis of what you see in the game in this show? No. The only clue we get is the huge numbers on "civilisation number XXXX".

Either of the two ways, - whether it was the actualy San-ti or an AI they created that he was communicating with - the notion that either of them would be unfamiliar with the concept of deception and lying is rather silly and incredulous. Especailly for a species that has supposedly undergone Evolution several times. Lying (,....and hte cognitive ability to both lie and perceive lies) are a key aspect of the development and thriving of apex species in the evolution of any natural environments biosphere and it's something most higher species (even in our planet here) do routinitely. Maybe not as elaborately as we do as humans, but they still do. It was a big laughable plot-hole in the story for me that they would be so taken aback by the idea of a species lying as if it wouldn't exist in their own history even if we were to believe they had evolved beyond it.

I guess this is the fiction part of sci-fi but the book explains the Sophons in more detail. In case you missed or forgot, they unfolded the protons into 2 dimensions to have a large surface on which to inscribe circuitry. They turned them into sentient AI's with the ability to fold and unfold into lower and higher dimensions at will. The countdown was made by flying back and forth into the retina at high speed to excite the electrons/nerves (I forget the exact explanation) to cause flashes of light. This is similar or perhaps inspired by what astronauts experience on the ISS. The flickering stars were made by unfolding into 2-D to enclose part of the night sky and the stars were made to flicker by adjusting the opacity of the "sheet". The entanglement is simply for real-time communication back to the fleet (even though that's pure fiction). Another thing to mention. In the book Evans is communicating with the San-ti by receiving messages on his retina, similar to the countdown. There's no voice from a speaker. I think it's meant to be taken as he is talking to one of the San-ti, the Sophon is just relaying the message. The "You are bugs" message is also one that appears in the main casts field of vision, not on screens. That was a bit of a misstep in the adaption in my opinion. Hope that adds something for you. I've been enjoying your analytical approach to the show :)

The reason the ship didn't immediately fall apart is because of friction. as long as all the layers are moving in the same direction at the same velocity, friction will hold the layers together. But once the boat ran ashore, the top layers were moving at a faster velocity than the bottom layers, and so they kept moving while the bottom layers stopped. Like when a car crashes into a wall, the passengers inside the car keep moving forward until they hit the wall too.

what he was pointing out is that he originally thought that the fiber wasn't actually cutting the metal, it was welding behind the fiber due to the temperatures involved at the point of cutting, so instead anything non-metal would be cut instead, that's what he thought was happening and got confused when the ship became sliced anyway

My guess as to how the Sophon is 'supposed' to work is that, because they are essentially 11 Dimensional particles with full supercomputer circuitry imprinted deeper into the dimensional strata, whenever the San-Ti's version is "observed," it mimics the particle sent to Earth, thus relaying all the different circuitry which equates to data transfer. The only way it works is assuming that the sub-atomic circuitry acts like spin-up/spin-down and can be altered with every observation. What the show doesn't include but the books do go into is the idea of micro-universes. By unfolding a single proton and expanding it up the dimensions, the Trisolarans discover that there are higher-dimensions species capable of existing within such a small space, effectively making a proton equivalent to a solar system or galaxy (or potentially a full observable universe for them), implying that perhaps our observable universe is the higher dimension of some much grander megaverse. Obviously full on sci-fi, but still enjoyable to think about!
@KerrMalygos
@KerrMalygos 4 месяца назад
But his whole point was that the first observation disentagles the protons. so even if you could get information through to the san-ti like that it would be a one time thing. Not a possibility for back and forth communication

If they are completely identical and entangled, what if the circuits in the higher dimensional folds "light up" in both of them when the one's on Earth detect information? Since they are essentially the same object. And the Sophons on the fleet are able to relay that information without having to be measured? I feel like it hinges on the computer inside the proton, not actually measuring the proton itself. But you're right, it's just a fun concept.

Its worth noting that the Sophons aren't really "pairs" per se. They're the same photon split into two identical parts. They basically found a way to have one photon exist in two places at once, hence the ability for instant communication. In the book it explains that the laws of physics don't apply in higher dimensions, and because the Sophons peer into those dimensions, those laws can SEEM broken in our world, but are in fact not broken at all because they don't exist in the dimension the photon exists in. Its also why the photons appear nonsensical in form, because the way they truly look cannot exist in only 3 dimensions.

First book spoilers follow. . . . Dubious scientific assumptions aside, the idea of a computer working in 10 dimensions (ignoring time) is fascinating to me. Our current electron-based computers are reaching their limits. There is a floor to the size we can make P/N transistors without quantum effects rendering computation non-deterministic. I've always struggled to imagine how computing can overcome this limitation, and the way it's described in the book is fascinating in concept. [Begin spoilers] The leveraging of the strong interaction to create circuits with mesons replacing electrons would exponentially increase the potential computing power. I'm not a physicist (I'm a software engineer), but assuming Liu using mesons suggests they could carry information faster than electrons based on mass (not sure now decay fits in), would exponentially increase computing power to the level of exaflops. Clock speed could also effectively be in the exahertz range. Something in the way that massless particles were not used as the information carriers suggests that doing so breaks determinism, but I'm not qualified to guess why.

Hmm, I don't quite understand the quantum entanglement explanation. Are you saying once one of the entangled particles is observed that the entanglement is severed? What if it's never observed? That is, since the sophons are self aware aren't they self reporting their information to the San-ti? So, the information is acquired (or exchanged) passively rather than actively through observation, thus preserving the entanglement (maybe?) I have no idea if that makes any sense.

Wills story about his cancer, he was not referring to Raj. Wills conversation with his cancer was an allegory. The cancer represented the San-Ti and Will's body represents the Earth. In Will's story, Will (the humans) negotiate a deal with his cancer (the San-Ti) where the cancer (the San-Ti) gets to live in his pancreas (a part of the earth) while Will gets to keep the rest (humans get to keep the rest of the Earth). This conversation immediately followed Raj's fathers war story for a reason. Raj's fathers' story was also an allegory. In that story, Raj's father represents the San-Ti, and the Pakistani soldiers represent humans. In Raj's fathers' story, the only way for Raj's father and his men (the San-Ti) to survive was for him to kill the Pakistani's (the humans) and to steal their supplies (the Earth). These 2 stories where juxtaposed to show the 2 possibilities. Either the San-Ti kill the humans and take the earth for themselves (Raj's fathers' story) or we negotiate a peace with them where they get to live on a portion of the Earth, while humans get to live on the rest (Will's story). I have not read the books, so none of this is spoiler.

In the entanglement part, I can suspend my disbelief. First, because it's only sci-fi. Second, San-ti's technology and understanding of physics is obviously superior than us. I get that based on our understanding of quantum entanglement right now, the details is not sound but maybe San-ti have a better understanding of physics than us. Maybe we overlooked something in our current understanding because we are not yet on the level of the San-ti. Lastly because sci-fi doesn't necessarily have to be accurate to us all the time, as long as the established rules are consistent, I am fine with.

1:18:31 - energies we cannot imagine could refer to amount of energy, or the refinement of energy. What sort of precision would be needed to emit that energy so it all arrives at the same time to a single proton? So it might not be enough energy to control the suns, but the timing and aim of the emitters would be very difficult to achieve. 1:20:24 - the other fun with folding a computer down back from the planet-wrapper size to proton size is signal time. It takes a long longer for a message to go from one side to the other of a 2D computer than it does for a 10-D computer. The Sophon was probably struggling from lag while it was unfolded. 1:38:25 - not all of the San-Ti are on the ships. The nice part is that thanks to dehydration & rehydration, the San-Ti can store a LOT more people on board their ships than humans can store.

The question I have then is if these two sophons are highly advanced supercomputers that are entangled (and presumably share processing power due to this arrangement), could the act of measurement be avoided by the entity itself providing information? I suspect that this goes into the territory of intention manipulating physics which is ultimately a pop-culture misinterpretation but this could be subtly different. If, for example, processing functions of the sophon exist on both sides of the entangled state, could this active connection maintain itself or would it destroy itself?

I don't understand everyone's problem with auggie. She seems to represent the moral dilemma that humanity is facing. I mean people are getting upset about how she reacts to things, but can you imagine being in her shoes?

I don't get it either. Well, I do actually. I think it's because the actress is too traditionally "pretty".

I don't think the problem is her getting upset, the issue is that she whines constantly in a very annoying way. She is so consumed by her own existential crises that she cannot zoom out to focus on the larger picture of fighting for the future of the human race which makes her seem selfish

@@enadegheeghaghe6369yeah I agree. The problem with her is not that she has moral compass but rather that she’s very childish and prefer not to act but to critique. Jin, Saul and Will share the same values but they do not act this way.

True! Tbh Saul is a bit childish himself but in a different way. He's way too relaxed, unserious and not committed (yet). But it doesn't mean that Auggie don't have to remove a log from her own eye first.

It does make me wonder that, if the Sophons work through entanglement, would it technically be possible for humanity to observe one of them from OUR side of the universe and effectively break the communication briefly? This idea only works if they are the only ones observing the particle(s). If we could measure/observe the other paired protons, it would briefly put us on the other side of the lens. While we wouldn't have the instrumentation to actually make sense of anything, it will cause a blip in their relayed knowledge lol.

Wow, cool idea! I’m impressed with your direction of thought. Tho I think it wouldn’t work even on tech layer as transmitter and receiver is not the same thing and two sophons were not designed to be identical, they were programmed differently (for instance I wouldn’t add spying abilities to sophons that stayed at home, just in case). Not to mention that you need to know how to control sentient computer and make it obey you.

Another perspective on the Panama canal. The fossil fuel pollution saved from shortening the trip for tens of thousands of ships would have killed tens of thousands more by now had the canal never been built so even the cost of lives is not solely a profit loss calculation imho.

I guess the quantum entanglement just serves the goal to give the AI an update all ~10 years

Im assuming its conservation of energy that split the boat apart when it hit the shore and why it held together. And gravity could assist in why the boat itself held together as the upper would rest on the lower material after being cut and made a strong enough seal to stop water

Auggie's invention is a massive advancement in material sciences. those nanofibers would put her name on lists that include Tesla, Edison, and Jobs. Also, if humans defeat the San-Ti, Auggies invention will play a critical role in that. I won't say how though as I assume it will be in the books later. But if you have watched Isaac Arthur's channel, then you know.

You’re exactly on spot! Not to defeat Santi tho, but give humanity an advantage. With such a material people can do a lot of things they were unable to do before. In the books it’s cosmic elevators.

@iamo0 use the spoiler tag. Like this: Spoiler Please use the spoiler tag. But Space Elevator is the correct term in English. And that is exactly what bail was referring to.

I feel like the ship split apart in the end because it ran into the ground, wasn't being steered anymore. So the bottom stops and the upper slices don't get the memo

How come nobody understood the Tequila/To kill her joke? You were saying the pillars across the channel were too obvious, but you missed that they added layers of rust to make it appear they had been there for ages, so nobody would question it, and it would probably work - think about yourself on the boat, even if you saw the pillars would you instantly think "these old rusty pillars are a threat to my ship" - they are just i-beams, nothing could be hidden in them, you wouldn't assume they have invisible super future tech hooked up to slice your ship apart. It would absolutely work, I used to work in a... similar? ... field, and you'd be surprised what people don't notice if everyone is acting natural, it's only when people act "off" that something in us flags something is wrong - people in this situation would probably be fairly relaxed and not actively looking for crazy edge cases.

Regarding the entanglement idea, I think it is possible that when the novels were written, the new hot idea in popular culture was quantum entanglement, and AI was not a huge thing yet. So the idea was probably that the San-ti still needs to receive information and make decisions themselves, not leaving everything to an AI. But I get that quantum entanglement cannot be used to transmit information in the way described here. The other thing that was a bit under-explained was how the sophons can keep moving at near light speed once they started interacting with things (this is supposedly how they are able to monitor all of humanity at once), I would assume they will just steadily lose speed and have no way to gain any back.
