He isn't qualified, exactly. His greatest essential feature in this adaptation -- is that the San Ti think he's a threat because of the "joke" that Ye told him. And because Ye chose him out of everyone on earth to tell it to, when she was the one person living who knew the San Ti best. So even if we don't see his qualifications, Ye did. And she would know even though she couldn't say it right out.

I feel like a lot of viewers missed the significance of the joke and in turn that confuses a lot of the plot to follow. I think they should have made the conversation at the graveyard a bit more direct like the book was so it was clearer to people that Saul had valuable information.

@@BD-rk6hx I think the change was worth the trade-off. Saul's story in S2 is going to be more focused on him solving the mystery of the joke, rather than ten hours of the "Waifu" nonsense. I'd make that trade every time.

You have to remember in the first episode, Saul was holding the physicist version of plausible Nobel prize. He didn’t have passion for it and still won. When they were all at Jacks, the smartest people in the room deferred to Saul. ‘Okay boy genius”, “try thinking about it for more than a second”, “Saullll”. He is not meeting his potential and still the smartest. He way chose to speak with Saul. She said her daughter said he was the smartest. That’s why he was chosen. They’ve peppered clues in throughout the season.

D&D producers did a magnificent job. I'm convinced that Netflix will greenlight the second season, and it will be even better (like the book). The real problem with adapting San ti to the screen is the third book. The technical and artistic team directing the project are awesome, but the ideas that Liu Cixin raised in the last book are so brutal on an imaginative and visual level that I would not like to be in D&D position... The Sophon learned to call humans bugs from that old dude talking to them on the radio. They were too literal to the point they couldn't understand metaphors or the point of fiction. I definitely recommend reading the books. I just finished the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy” last week & I was blown away. I think it’s my favorite Sci-fi book series since the “Southern Reach Trilogy” the series on which Annihilation is based. The Showrunners did a good job laying the groundwork for books 2 & 3 & setting up future plots. I think that’s also why some of the characters felt tacked on this first season . It’s because they moved some things up to prepare for future storylines, like the convenience of 5 young scientists all knowing each other. Amazing stuff to look forward to. I Hope Netflix gives this project all the support it needs to tell this century spanning story.

I have not read the books so I don't know anything beyond episode 8 of this show. But there are a few things that seem very strange to me, and I am going to assume that the "fact" that they can't lie in itself isn't a lie. First off they seemed to be under the impression that humanity welcomed them, and so their entire civilization set off toward earth, but why did a few stay behind? (The sword woman and possibly the little girl seem to be the only San Ti who stayed). Why did they not construct the Sophons and sent them to scout BEFORE leaving with the fleet? If they had they could have stayed quiet or gone somewhere else rather than risking to become a "funeral procession". Honestly there is only one answer that makes sense to me, which is that the San Ti that stayed behind on their planet is the pacifist that sent the warning in the first message and everything that is happening after is actually to HELP humanity prepare for the colonization fleet, the Sophons purpose is to make sure humanity can WIN the war. The San Ti they are in communication with have said that a species that are afraid survives, a species that is not afraid goes extinct, "HUMANITY MUST LEARN TO FEAR" "I WILL TEACH YOU TO BE AFRAID". Now why would she want to teach us to be afraid if the intention is to subjugate or destroy us? This is contradictory, unless the intent is to save us through some "tough love". I also suspect that the San Ti fleet are unaware what is going on, they made two set of Sophons and sent two to earth and kept two on their planet, but do they have any communication with their fleet? Then there is the case with the brain probe breaking and going of course, maybe it sabotaged to keep the fleet from figuring out what was going on?
@davyc412
@davyc412 Месяц назад
It's a spoiler for the books but the San ti send a lot more than 2 Sophons. The entire time the fleet is approaching they are constantly making and sending more. The two thst arrive in the show are just the first two. They also try in the books to explain away the differences between some of the inconsistencies with physics with whst they call the shooter hypothesis and the farmer hypothesis. Basically an incredible marksman is shooting at targets on a range for fun and shoots a hole every 10cm. A 2 dimensional creature lives on the surface of the target walking along the target sees the holes and says that it's a fundamental law thst there is a hole in the universe Evey 10cm. The farmer hypothesis is thst a farmer feeds his turkeys every morning at 10am. The turkeys figure this is a fundamental law of the universe thst food appears every morning at 10am. Until its Thanksgiving and the farmer shows up at 10 and slaughters them all. The message is thst in both cases what the creatures thought of as fundamental laws of their universe were just byproducts of something larger thst they couldn't understand.

The show is quite a bit better than the book, in my opinion, at least as it goes to character and emotion. The "Oxford Five" aren't really in the book at all, they are bits and pieces of the "main character" of the book (or in Saul's case, the second book). The set up for Will (a different character in the books) and Project Staircase and Jin (also someone else in the books) is set up much earlier and in a much more effective way. The show doesn't exactly make it clear why Saul was chosen as a Wallfacer, but even in the book, that character (Luo Ji) doesn't really know why he's been chosen. Saul is a great replacement, and his relationship with Auggie will be good set up for where his character goes from here. Thanks for watching and commenting! Ecosystems need balance and there is a direction in which they are affected (like top-down or bottom up, so for instance extinct megafauna had major impact in modeling landscape making that a top-down effect in the system). In that sense, insects have a great impact from bottom-up to other animal species. Their role is quite complex, many studies do show an important top-down effect in plant communities, affecting plant dominance and biomass, impacting the balance of the overall ecosystem with an again effect in bottom-up direction 🌱🐛

The simple reason he was chosen as a Wallfacer is because he was the only person directly targeted by the San Ti for assassination. He was chosen as the fourth Wallfacer in the books and the "wildcard". All the other three were chosen on merit. The book version of Saul, Luo Ji was a class mate of Yang Dong (Vera). the souphon just go straight to earth... like literally aim at the direction of earth (the position it will be in 4 years since we have to count for dislocation) and "turn on the light". There is no maneuver because there is no need to, it just need to go straight
@Germgeuse
@Germgeuse 4 месяца назад
it does need to maneuver when it gets to earth though, or else it would just keep going. plus the whole point of sophons is that they can maneuver anywhere on earth at any time to spy on humans. this implies they have some sort of tech inside the sophon that allows it to move, which is what he was questioning.

@Germgeuse
@Germgeuse 4 месяца назад
@@iepvienredstoneHuy007 indeed, but that still isn't the point. It's easy enough to imagine shooting a particle out in one direction at the speed of light, like the series says, even we can do that. what's harder to imagine is how you would contain within that particle an ability change directions, which it inevitably needs to do. It's not just a flyby probe that gathers as much info as it can in the brief time it passes us, it is meant to stick around and make precise near speed of light movements, like a particle sized flying saucer. that's the confusing part, not that it made it to earth in the first place.
@iepvienredstoneHuy007
@iepvienredstoneHuy007 4 месяца назад
@@Germgeuse quantum theory (follows my rough understanding) dictates that there is randomness in the tiny scale, matter manifest and disappear all the time. If couple that theory with the “particles have higher dimensions that can be unfolded” theory of the show, you could theoretically install a stearing mechanism in one of those higher dimensions, the stearing effect would only manifest on our dimension as randomness behaviors which is typical of quantum physics particles
@Germgeuse
@Germgeuse 4 месяца назад
@@iepvienredstoneHuy007 in the realm of sci fi where there are higher dimensions folded inside a proton, it is plausible yes. but I achieved my point in making you understand that it's not the initial journey to earth that was being questioned.

Being a Wallfacer is a stressful and unimaginably important job. It would be completely within the legitimate means of furthering your ability to execute your job, to give yourself the optimal living conditions for your body and mind. A good house, all the amenities you could think of, people around you, distractions and pleasures, etc. It's not like all that stuff isn't common enough amongst celebrities and elites around the world. In fact, in reality, I believe major corporations, celebrities, etc would be falling over absolutely backwards to donate luxuries beyond imagination to one of the Wallfacers, just for the clout and recognition, in the same way people would 'buy stars' for the war effort. The challenge is whether one can keep those things under control? Would one be an Aurelius or a Caligula? And so then the real question is a matter of image and perspective. How people will think years down the road, once (as you say in the video) the buzzwords and ideas have moved on? When Saul has been a wallfacer for 50 years; whether known as a scholar and stoic thinker, or a party animal, hedonist, tyrant: will anyone care? Will people loose faith or detest his existence? Will he be 'The Painter', the Pope, or Puyi? Wade has lots of ideas and can get buy in but what is the longevity of any big idea? The Staircase Project was a good idea that failed 3 steps in. The only real hope he has is, as he said, Only Advance. I interperet that to mean keep throwing ideas forward and move on them. But that doesn't instill confidence that any given idea will have staying power. He could become very "Elon"-like where he has new ideas every few years and scuppers previous work just because he's gotten bored or disillusioned with results. Does he have the perseverance and loyalty to ideas to see them through? Does anyone else? At what point could he burn one bridge too many?

Before I even start the video really, I can tell you that this Netflix adaptation is not super faithful to the books but that's a good thing. It's intentionally designed for a worldwide audience. The tencent version in China is very very close to the book, but the acting is a little rough and the middle of the season is very very slow. The payoff in the end is quite fantastic if you have the patience to get through to it. Anyway, that's all for now

Concerning the "calm" in mission control when the anomaly occured with Will's space capsule. You're right, a well trained, disciplined, group doesn't panic. Take the time to watch this video of NASA's mission control during the launch of the ill-fated Challenger space shuttle. It's destruction occured shortly after the words, "Go at throttle-up". ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JfrWu_UgDaY.html

It's the JOKE that's why he was chosen....how can you not remember that scene? lol . With respect to the "cult", the show simplified it from the book so that's why it makes you feel like the zealots are more cookie cutter. The book actually split the cult into three internal conflicting factions.
@storieswithstyle
@storieswithstyle 4 месяца назад
I don't buy the explanation that it was the joke. Like, I do buy that it was the San-Ti's reason, that is clear, but why do the humans know about it? was already weird that they jumped from "a car was hacked" to "it was San-Ti, definitely!". And the whole UN had to vote on it, so it must have been convincing points that people can get behind and not "a dude was attacked by a car". =) I am actually sad that the cult was not split. That would have been a lot more interesting.. =(

Since the Sophons were watching Ye, whoever she’s trying to impart some wisdom to is a risk to figure out how to deal with them. Humans don’t know. They only know San-Ti and the cult went through a lot of effort to kill him…making him important to humans as well.

It's dumb the way they portrayed nuclear pulse propulsion. A pusher plate and onboard mini nukes makes much more sense and the tech while highly classified was already developed decades ago. Onboard nuke dispenser allows for more precision and the ability to course correct, solar sail would be highly inefficient and more prone to mechanical failure

The idea of the San Ti trying to control and hold back human technological development is similar to what’s happening in the real world. American government and their allies trying to control and hold back Chinas economic and technological development. Both are wrong and just as bad. Ironically in both cases, the other side is only doing that because fear and also their technological development is slower, so trying to control them before it’s too late.

My take on Auggie (all speculation no spoilers). I think she has led a privileged life. I get the impression she’s from a well off family. Obviously had an excellent education, intelligence, and talent. She was highly successful at a young age. All of a sudden she’s involved in extreme violence and death. She’s completely unprepared and even if she accepts the necessity it is too much stress. How did she finance the filters? She could have partnered with a charitable organization to fund a small nonprofit startup. Seems feasible.
