One of the really cool things about woodworking? There are SO many different ways to do the tasks we need to do. Here’s a great example; cutting rabbets on a table saw. You might automatically think that you have to own a dado head to do this, or that you’d have to use a router table or hand-held router for this job. Nope. Cutting rabbets on a table saw can easily be done with a standard saw blade, and a few set up tricks.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The thing that lets us get away with this using a single blade is cutting the rabbet in two passes. Part of the key is consistently setting the height of the blade and the position of the rip fence. Brass setup gauges make short work of the set up. Once the setup is done, it’s important to make the cuts correctly. The same face that is down on the table for the first pass must be against the rip fence for the second cut. The edge against the fence of the first pass must be against the fence on the second pass.

THE DOWNSIDE
Your biggest enemy on this technique, and greatest ally, is time. It’s faster to do the set up required for this than it is to put a dado head in the table saw. But because it requires two passes the cutting process is slower, your rabbets will take longer to produce. It’s a trade off.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE TABLE SAW
If you want to make your rabbets, and dadoes, using a dado head, we can help you with the process of setting up and cutting dadoes and rabbets. There’s so much more that a table saw can do. Want to learn what else your saw is capable of? Check our more videos on table saws.

Excuse my language but f*cking awesome! You don't know how many times I've had to sit through blah blah blah blah for 10 minutes and then the last 30 seconds is actually what I'm looking for or what they're teaching. Straight and to the point and even safety tips....couldn't ask for more. Thank you thank you thank you. lol

There is something mesmerizing and almost hypnotic, when observing a true craftsman at work. The confident and seemingly effortless way the two cuts are made here is a treat to watch. Thank you for the demo.

I've been cutting rabbets all day by making 3 or 4 passes for one rabbet, working on a project with a buddy that has 20 years in woodworking. Also, I'm making 45° cuts to join the wood, but why not just use a rabbet for that also? You just made the project, and seemingly my life, a while lot easier. I can't wait to see his face tomorrow when I go in and show him how to do it with only 2 passes. Thanks for this vid.

Awesome faster than changing blades or setting up a router. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I have been using my table saw to cut rabbets and never could understand why my cuts were always off just a tad and I did a lot of sanding.....this makes it easier. I had been setting my fence wrong. Keep bringing us newbies all the basics of the trade

Why wouldn't you just adjust your fence for the second cut and flip your piece end for end so your waste falls free of the blade? We always run the edge first while it's the most stable, then adjust our fence for the second cut to run the face, with waste falling free. Is it just to save time?

Great set-up demo for the rabbit cut.. and far more importantly the reminder safety tip of the possible "arrow" firing back.

I think a safer and beginner friendly way to do this cut is to not completely finish the cut on the second run. This way the 'arrow' piece is still attached and you can cut it off with a final cross/miter cut.

I can't see this method working for longer pieces. Trying to hold a 63" long x 22" wide piece of 3/4" cabinet stock with the face against the fence means you have the 63" dimension held vertically on edge, i.e. very unstable.

thanks for the tips... I think you should have saved this video [and the Title] for Easter ~~grin kinda like the April Fool video on the Wood Lathe from a few years ago...

Thanks for the video...seems easy enough that I can tackle it to make some frames. Where can I purchase the steel bar stocks that you have? Seemed like a variety of sizes too. Thanks!

Surely you’ve found an answer by now lol but incase not, they’re at pretty much any Home Center or Hardware Store. May be listed as Machine Keys, keystock, key bars..something along those lines! Just about every store ive noticed em in calls em something different lol

Other than making sure you're out of the line of fire, is there any other way to lessen the chance of kickback? Could I, for example, use a skinny pushstick to ensure that the loose wood moves in concert with the board so that it is never stuck?
@Wwgoa
@Wwgoa 4 года назад
- Use anti-kickback pawls- Use a device such as The Grr-ripper to maintain solid control over the wood all the way through the cutting operation- Be sure that your stock is face planed and jointed before ripping, as twisted stock can lead to kickback- Set your blade to an appropriate height so that the gullets of the blade clear the top of your stock. Keeping the blade too low can lead to kickback Paul

Hi there, thank you for this video! Question, is there an ideal sequence of which cut first? My buddy who does woodworking said to try this method before I found this video but advised I do the vertical cut first to make the second cut have more of a face of the board on the table and less likely for error. Any thoughts on this?

why bother to change to a dado blade when this is so fast and easy. i'm new to this of course.
@Wwgoa

It depends on how many rabbets you have to mill. If you just have a few then it's probably quickest to just do with a saw blade. If you have a large production run, then it will probably be worth the effort of installing the dado stack. Paul

Great question. What he said was "40-tooth alternating top bevel". Here is a good example: amzn.to/3dMBZqj Paul

Thanks for the question and reply. I am currently on the never ending pursuit of the perfect, one-stop-shop table saw blade….that doesn’t exist. My hang up was rabbets on the table saw for picture frames. I was bound and determined I needed a FTG rip or box joint blade ($$$) or lose my mind over some small bat ears from a combination blade - But alas, the RU-vid’s proves it can be done! I always appreciate George’s teaching - A good mix of down to earth advice with safety in the forefront of mind. Thank you for taking the time to share with the rest of us!
