EPISODE 50.
…in which we finish the templates for the bow assembly and cut out all the pieces with the chainsaw jig. Meanwhile, I have to deal with a damage to a power-plane, the Shipsaw, a chainsaw, part of my camera, and my wallet! Jack and Joe lose their minds organising all the fastenings in the workshop, and I get to do a bit of amateur furniture-making with a mirror-stand for Cecca. We plane everything in sight, and eat our lunch on a very expensive boutique purpleheart table.

I work for Hyster in Europe and have asked out media team to look you up and follow your channel in support as we’re very impressed to see one of out trusty 50s trucks providing you with some needed heavy lifting! Keep up the amazing work my friend. A truly inspirational project.

I've been watching you for a long time now Leo and I have already told you how much I admire you. There's something that came to me today as I was watching this latest video: I feel that when you finally take her out and there's a concern (I don't hope for any problems, but I suppose there's always something unexpected) I know that you will be able to figure out the problem and zero in on the fix as you have touched every piece of her, every edge, every surface, every board , every bolt and all the engine parts and the masts and the sheets. She is truly your boat and you are forever tied to her in every way and when she cries you will be able to sooth her and comfort her as you know her like no other . You will dip and crawl into her deepest recesses and climb to her tallest points and only you will know what she needs. What a connection, what a relationship. This is a personal journey that I envy. I wish I could have the confidence that you will have knowing about every inch of the boat you built step by step, and then sailing her, feeling her shift and move and glide because you gave her life, and you will keep her alive and show her the world. Novels are groomed on stories like yours.

Too late now, but what you needed was a filter wrench. They need to be sized almost exactly for the diameter, but they are very easy to make. You cut a circle in a piece of sheet material like plywood or hardboard (Masonite™ or the like) that just fits the diameter. It should be cut in one end of a rectangle about 20% wider than the diameter and twice as long. Cut a wedge from the circle to the other end of the rectangle. Slip the circle over the filter and squeeze the sides of the wedge together gently. It gets a great grip without collapsing the fragile frame of the filter. If you can trim the head of the wrench to leave a uniform band around the opening it helps make the pressure even. Reshape the handles for comfort if you plan to use it more than a few times. (Or Amazon sells them; search for [ camera lens filter wrench ].)

Thanks Leo. Little tip with the Alaskan, if you're planning on doing many more long cuts, try mounting a small hand winch to the rear rail, and run it off a pulley. I use a length of chainsaw pull cord for the winch cable. It reduces the effort by about 80%, full gas on the throttle, and control the rate of cut with the winch. And if there's any chance you can keep this project up for the next year or five, you'll make me a very happy man! Thanks again for the video!!!

When I was 13 I got in trouble with the law. My father made me work with him every day for a year without pay as punishment. Sorting through a hundred jumbo coffee cans and organizing all of those fasteners was my first job. It lasted for 3 weeks. I kept that job until I graduated high school then went to work for the Mack and Freightliner dealership as a mechanic. For some reason this video made me think of that. It actually taught me how to identify different size nuts and bolts at a glance. Jesus! That was 30 years ago! Time and all.

Hey Leo, big fan and supporter of your work. I’m only on EP22, but as a woodworker. Myself (long ago) I learnt that many woods are extremely toxic, especially when cutting the wood and breathing in saw dust. The Purple Heart wood for the keel is in that toxic category, and I imagine you take all the precautions necessary but it’s not talked about. Is it worth mentioning to your audience that MOST wood dust (mostly hardwoods) is toxic. Thank you for your work, your patience, and for being a very kind person. And MAN, your hair is amazing! :)

Watching Pancho take it all in, dancing on her stand, you have to wonder how the world there looks to her, what the rhythm of her day is like, who she favors, who she shuns, what her favorite thing to do might be. I'm really looking forward to seeing all the centerline pieces bolted together. Those huge timbers so carefully and precisely joined is a satisfying thing to contemplate.

I think it's important for any wood worker to sometimes do projects outside their usual scope (to be read - submarine scope like view). If you work large, make a small project, and vice versa. I've come to find that working solely in one groove nubs your skills and makes you feel odd working other things whenever you need to. Most of my wood work is in large composite beams, precision, yes, but i can't handle that with my hands. So i do small boxes and joinery exercises. Feels so nice to let loose outside my own work oriented sight.

Bryan Coventry Me too, Brian.I should like to donate but am living below the poverty line. I have been following from the beginning when the Tallyho was trucked in and the workshop took shape. The whole journey reminds me of my grandfather from Kirkbymoorside, N.Yorks. He started off working out of Barnard Castle in the late 1800’s/ early1900s, working as an apprentice in the nearby mines building forms to hold the shafts up, then ,no doubt to get back in the fresh air he sailed to Brazil to build the railroads ( he always had a swordfish sword hanging on the hallway wall in his home in Crown Square) He became a qualified builder/craftsman and furniture making carpenter, building everything from churches, homes and bedroom furniture sets for his four girls and one son. ). I emigrated to Vancouver, Canada and then, moved back to college later, married, we moved from Toronto to Vermont, USA where I self built my house as well as beds, tables, shelving and children’s furniture, all the while raising sheep and goats. Boats have always fascinated me having hung around Portsmouth (Pompey)Dockyard and other harbors in England, hence my interest in Leo and the Tally Ho.

So fun to watch this. I loved how nice you made the mirror stand. I was quite frustrated that you never talked about what you found on the gear shaft of the ship saw though;)

@@stellarluna2637 I imagined that the Key in the Key way had worn out and allowed slop. I think that is right I have had the same issues on machines because they move around eventually. He was also smart to check the trueness roundness of the shaft hole and compare it I suppose to the shaft diameter and roundness. He is very thoughtful and thorough about everything. My wife imagined his family gave him the work ethic of doing things correctly the first time. Wonderful to watch his great example.

@Baron Marseille Yes, bush and ream the hole....weld the shaft up and spin it in a lathe back to size.

Looks like it uses Babbit for the bearing. Shaft is probably not worn.

Smart episode, Leo. Cinema- release quality. Verdict on the ships saw bearing. Deliberately keeping us in suspense for next episode? Clever tactics!
