CVT vs Powershift. Is CVT better than Powershift?
For more information on tractor innovations, visit the #TractorLab site: tractorlab.info/
There’s a choice to be made - Powershift or continuously variable transmission?
Just what sort of transmission do you want your powerhouse new monster machine to possess?
CVT vs Powershift.
TECHNOLOGY
POWERSHIFT: The simpler of the two, but becoming more complex. Generally a powershift involves a conventional gearbox with several clutch packs to allow the change between gears. It usually cycles through several different clutch packs to achieve gear ratios. Today, new powershifts rely heavily on computer control to make the operator’s task more comfortable, reliable and easy.
CVT: There are usually only one or two clutch packs with a planetary gear system controlled by a small hydrostatic unit, with a ring gear on the outside, a sun gear in the middle and three or four planet gears that revolve around the sun gear. Working together, this creates a seamless operation. A driver can choose the exact speed for the job, while a powershift driver must operate within speed ranges.
EASE OF USE
POWERSHIFT: Today’s powershift tractors can go through all gears with the push of a button or via automatic settings, so there is now minimal downside. While a powershift might suit three or four applications quite well, it can seem a compromise in others once you know what else is out there.
CVT: Gear ratios are taken care of automatically. Your input as driver is simply telling the tractor you want to go faster or slower. The tractor decides what internal transmission ratio and engine rpm are needed to achieve the required ground speed. It will do this with the least amount of engine rpm it can.
COST
POWERSHIFT: Usually cheaper, but not always. Powershift tractors usually come in two variants - sophisticated and less sophisticated - with appropriate price tags. Likewise, some manufacturers are more price aggressive than others, so it always pays to compare specs and reviews. Users often argue, with some justification, that if you just need a heavy horsepower tractor to pull a plough around all day, you might as well save $5000 and buy a powershift.
CVT: CVTs generally cost way more than powershift models, sometimes because they are sold as part of a premium package. Compared to powershifts, one expert describes today’s flash CVT tractors as being the difference between a tricked up ute with fancy panels and six-speed transmission to a knockabout farm ute with uncomfortable seating. They are worlds apart in looks and comfort but both get the job done.
MAINTENANCE
POWERSHIFT: Comparable in maintenance needs to CVTs. The difference is manufacturers tend to be more lenient in allowing outside technicians to work on them. So service costs are more negotiable. The old days of pulling out a couple of spanners and getting to work on a transmission are long gone, for both.
CVT: Similar maintenance requirements to modern Powershifts, although manufacturers tend to maintain control of servicing/repairs because of the specialised diagnostic tools used. Most agree outside influences and treatment on farm have more to do with tractor lifespan than the transmission itself.
VERSATILITY IN FIELD
POWERSHIFT: Comparable to driving a manual car as against driving an automatic. In a powershift, drivers perceive themselves to be more a part of the whole operation. If a load increases, such as when hitting a stubborn spot when tilling, and revs drop, you might need to change gears to maintain speed.
CVT: This is set-and-forget cruise control ideal for jobs of varying power needs and loads, such as tilling rough and uneven ground. It takes pressure off the driver to keep the tractor at the optimum ratio because engine revs are automatically changed to maintain desired speed.
ECONOMY
POWERSHIFT: Thanks to technical advances, powershifts are continually improving in fuel efficiency, although there are many intangibles such as driver habits and varying loads and terrain that cloud performance figures. Servicing costs can be cheaper, although generally there is not a big difference.
CVT: Generally more fuel efficient (some say 5-10 per cent). In the field, it is continually adjusting itself to achieve a ‘geared up and throttled back’ state, thus generally burning less fuel because it is not using so many revs. Manufacturers suggest rebuilding costs are similar for both systems.

It depends on the application. If you need pulling power, Power shift is the way to go. If you need to have variable speed in order to run an implement or to do many directional changes. CVT is your animal. As you said, both will do the job, but, just as a sword will slice bread, you would not gut a deer with a butter knife.

Yah i agree ive grown to love the john Deere autopowershift/ivt i had a bad wreck years ago that was partly inexperience but also largly the fendt cvt doesn't respond bright away so it started running away getting pushed down the hill right at that crucial point of the load starting to push and the tractor realizing and trying to slow down it failed by the time it realized it was already to far gone even still it didn't feel like it really had much to offer felt more like a hydrostatic so naturally i am leary of the fendt cvt in some situations but they are the king for fine movement or need fine control of wheel speed things like hitching to implements or pulling out stuck trucks i haven't used a fendt enough in say if for cleaning corals or other yard chores its king but i do like the old school power shift with a shuttle shifter super easy compared to the old school before shuttle shift days ill always love the true torque monsters of olden days where you pick your gear and let it grunt through tough spots they would bog down a lot lower than the new tractors before throwing in the towel if you asked it to I would love to one day find a good test to prove it but i feel like the old school hp vs new school hp going head to head the old school would show more torque if you locked them both at the same gear ratio show the diffrence between designs and how the new ones rely less on brute strength and more on technology and keeping conditions optimal for the engine

I have never tried a power shift only vario. And with what i hear i think its better with a power shift if you a driving silage grass from a foarge haverster caouse the foarge havesters speed changes som often. When i have done the and i hat to acelerate it was kinda slobby. I drove a case ih puma 230. it was kinda nooring i would rather drive a tractor when i gave it gas it should shift gears firs. I don't know if you could understand any of what I have written

Fact! -Powershift is fun to drive, but you need to know what you're doing and when. -CVT is easy to drive and you have time to think other things when you are operating.

Ill take the john deere ivt but not the fendt cvt ivt is clear its still actual direct connect from engine to rear end fendt feels and acts more like a hydrostatic and doesn't seem to put as much power to the ground ie loose a lot in the transmission but it does have much nicer control for say you are in a muddy area pulling trucks out all day the fendt wins in my books and its so much smoother at creeping around but as far as field work or roading heavy loads over hills deere all the way holds the weight back better faster response to it getting pushed by the weight in the field it is more like the old school power shift but smooth operation of a cvt though it actually being a autopowershift and you can barely tell it does shifts

Fendt cvt's tend to fail a lot and cost a fortune to repair.
@bartdereu9267
@bartdereu9267 Год назад
That's actually a bullshit story. Fendt was obvioulsy the only one who tested their transmission on effeciency, and they learned that a CVT has it's highest efficiency at 70% hydrostatic and 30% mechanical power. That's why they are build the way they are. Fieldwork 0-25 and road 0-55 . In field modus they have the highest effeciency at around 8 km/h , making it the most effecient tractor on the market. A JD (ZF) transmission is allot more complex, has more gears and clutches (with more drag) and are not even close to the effeciency of a Fendt vario transmission. All of this has been documented in dozens of magazine. But haters always gone hate i guess.

@@bartdereu9267 cool you can read salesman brochures but do you have real seat time ill take the mechanical more complex as you call it transmission of the deere ivt any day of the week over a fendt they all have there place but the fendt has been the cause of a life threatening situation for me cause there was a disconnect between the ground speed and the engine rpm im lucky to be alive if im constantly pulling trucks in mud or something yah i may ask for a fendt as i need that fine control of wheel slip and smooth transition of power or doing pto work with hydraulics that computer setup is handy but if im trying to pull hills or put hp down to the ground ill go deere ive had case magnums with the self protection feature of if you bog the engine beyond a certain point it kicks it into neutral well i can tell you trying to cross a intersection that is dangerous
