I got laid off early this year and I found most of the jobs that were giving me interviews were for security jobs. I’ve always done security but for part of my career as part of DevOps and Linux engineering. But I decided why not, go back into security, it’s interesting, I’m good at it and companies obviously want to pay me for it. So I got my CISSP and I’m now happily working as a security architect again.

I recently. finished my Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate. I have no knowledge in cybersecurity space prior to taking the course. After finishing Google Cybersecurity, I can say that I have gained tons of information as well as valuable hands-on experience. Currently, I am studying for CC and actively blasting resumes. Tomorrow I will be interviewing for SOC Analyst 1 position at an outsourcing company. Not expecting to get hired but I want to experience the feeling of getting an interview in the field of Cybersecurity.

@@dewdrop198I don't believe one needs coding experience. I just jumped into cybersecurity from the financial world with zero coding knowledge. People who work in the industry that I've talked to say that they don't use any coding, but base level knowledge of how to read code helps a ton I've learnt. If coding is holding you back, as was the case with me, I talked to some people in the space, and they reassured me to not let that get in the way.

Thank you so much Grant for your sentiment on the field. I've been contemplating what would be the best way to get some experience in this industry. I'm currently enrolled in college for said Cyber Security Networking IT, however, I feel that sometimes what's being taught by the professor tends to feel outdated or the professor themselves isn't fully immersed in what they're teaching. Thus leading to me being uninterested and unmotivated. I'm hoping after I try out this course it can change my perspective on things.

Hi Grant! I'm in my senior year of high school and have been seriously considering Cybersecurity for several months, particularly in trying to become a SOC Analyst. I have been studying the Google Cybersecurity certificate on Coursera for two weeks now, just the available material for the "audit" option as I can't afford to pay for the whole program right now. At the moment I'm unsure whether or not it's in my best interest to try and get a degree in cybersecurity. Although I am aware many businesses are degree-hungry, a lot of people also recommend learning through a handful of certifications and personal projects for the hands-on experience instead of spending four years for a bachelors degree. I'm currently eligible for a program that would have my school district pay for my first year in college, so I was possibly thinking of getting an associate's degree and studying for the Security+ or Blue Team Level 1 certificate after I have completed the Google Cybersecurity cert, on top of a few personal projects. Any input would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks.
@AngelRamirez-ot5mo
@AngelRamirez-ot5mo 9 месяцев назад
Do it. Cybersecurity is only growing more and if you don’t want to spend four years at college just get your associate’s and get your security plus. There’s many free resources out there to help you prepare for the security plus. Try to get an internship while you’re in school to build experience. I’m currently a biology major working in a lab and the pay is decent but not enough. Money isn’t the only reason I’m changing my career but I found I have a high interest in cybersecurity. I decided to make the switch to the tech field but still working at my current job. It’s definitely not easy teaching myself but I’m committed to make the switch to tech. Good luck with your studies and continue watching Grant’s videos as well as others out there who provide valuable information about cybersecurity and their own path to cybersecurity.

Guys, cyber security jobs is not something to think about. Since 2018 group of 120 completed a 6 months boot camp, CompTIA certifications, penetration test certifications, GRC and PCI DSS framework, six months internship… none of us has a cyber security job. It’s a waste of time, getting a job in this field it’s about who you know not what you know.

No online certificate is. Use certificates like Coursera to figure out what you want to specialize in, figure out projects, complete those and add them to your resume. The certificate just shows you're willing to keep learning either post-graduation or on your own time. (Unless it's an accredited certification, which I see as different from just online certificates.)
