Some movies, books, or works of art get trashed because the social and cultural context they appear into make the work not be seen for what it truly is. It only becomes visible later.
The director went through a very nasty scandal and divorce. Then he put his paramour in the lead role of a movie that she wasn't suited. The general attitude was that they should have both retired from the spotlight for awhile and let things rest. But no, this pretty misfire of a movie happened and much of Hollywood wasn't sorry to watch it crash.
As someone who as a kid watched plenty of Moonlighting on television [ probably over my mother's shoulder ] and for whom Cybill Shepherd didn't make much of an impression I definitely find her to be cute-as-a--button and very endearing.
as an adult i can see it as one of the best films ever, even with Cybill in it miscast. my sister says it is exactly what you imagined when you read the book, she said the best transference from book to movie ever. barry and cybill hated eachother so it a testament to his good acting abilities that he conveyed love for her ih his eyes.
John Rant: I think Cybill Shepherd is beautifully cast in this! I remember we were reading this novella in high school the year this movie was made. I was thinking at the time, "Who'd want to see a movie of this boring piece of crap?" Was I ever pleasantly surprised! Cybill was my first female crush!

Originally the director wanted to play Winterbourne next to his obsession Shepherd. Thankfully he was talked out of that disaster. Too bad, he didn't heed warnings to recast Daisy. It's unfortunate that once Bogdanovich pulled out, they didn't rewrite the Winterbourne role. Barry Brown is an obvious star and outshined Shepherd in every scene. If they had made cut Shepherd's screentime and made her more illusive and added more scenes with Brown, this movie wouldn't have been such a drag.
+Anas Skah The Paramount Vault is a RU-vid channel run by Paramount itself that offers some of its movies for free in what I'm assuming is a rotating schedule. Currently it is up there to watch for free.

This is seriously the worst, most cheaply-made movie i have ever seen. It is really annoying and don't bother watching it if you're just trying to get out of reading the story.
