from the country of Indonesia I'm here, I really like watching your videos very good and inspiring. continued success with cycling besides being healthy it is also fun and calms the mind. you are so cool bro😅❤❤❤❤
When I was riding the 20inch kids bike with three gears (Sachs), maybe I was seven?, my dad an me made my first metric century in the Netherlands. We planned for 50K. Than we had power. And decided to go further, to a campground displayed on the old paper map. We arrived there at a little over 100K and the camp was left open, just like the RV in the video. Maybe less scary more cousy. We stayed and had a good night.
Great video, thanks for the memories of my old stomping grounds. Motels, haha, yep, on the Southern Tier route I spent a $60 night in the Sportsman Motel in Alabama. Nothing like a gas station motel where the curtain was hanging off the wall, no TP, and mold all over the shower. Both rain and nightfall was coming and I had nothing but private land and a highway. I laid my tent flat on top of the bed, put my sleeping bag over that, and slept dry after foraging for dinner in the gas station. Great memories can be made this way🙂Happy trails for 2023!
My brother and I spent many summers in and around Niland from the late 60's to around the late 70's. We had planned to go back a few years back, but my brother passed away unexpectedly.... so thank you for the nice tour in our old stomping grounds. Need to take in Slab City and Salvation Mountain.... along with the Fountain of Youth Spa and Bombay Beach. There are MANY hidden treasures (natural hot springs) all through the valley.... if you know where to look. Thank you for this. It really once was a great place for the entire family.
Hey Ryan! I just finished reading your book titled, "The Long Way Home." What a great read; truly enjoyed it! Very well written and just like your videos, it highlights living life full of love, appreciation, optimism, and inspiration. I'm sharing it with my best buddies at my local bike shop, so others can enjoy it too! 😉 Thank you - so much!
Know I’m a bit late to comment, but cruised back to watch the Burningman Ultra! I’m a burner and have watched your other ultras there. All I can say is, must have been a bit of a brutal year, what with the heat of 22’ and the roads weren’t the best! But glad to have caught it again. Your so positive you can make a 33 mile run in the heat, dust, and desert seem like fun! I’m sure it is for some, the completely nutter insane ones! Keep on keeping on.
I always wear ear plugs when I'm riding exactly because of the noise of passing vehicles and the wind! You can still hear what's going on and your ears are protected from loud noises. That flop-house you stayed in was worth about $25. :D But, like you said: warm and cozy and clean! (Well, you, anyways!) Thanks for these fantastic videos! Even though it's taking me forever to depart on my ride, I know I can get psyched again every time you put out another adventure series! Stay safe! Wishing you a fantastic New Year!
So happy when this popped up. My wife calls you Zacatecas guy by the way lol! We love your channel. She says she loves watching because of your positivity. She was watching another channel with me, I won’t mention what runner I was watching, but she didn’t like how this person didn’t boost the guy that was really struggling. Only giving high 5’s to the strong ones. She said, “Zacatecas guy would never do that!” Happy New Year by the way bud!
I've done much of that same ride. Total flashback. There's also a super fun 50k ultra called the Oriflame that starts up top in the Laguna Mountains and drops down Oriflame Canyon into the desert. Out n back. You'd dig it. Thanks for sharing your journey brother. Yew! 🤙
Dates are actually an excellent anti-bonk cycling food. They are natural, packed with sugar to go right to the blood stream, easily digested, require no packaging, no refrigeration and still taste good after they have been in your pocket for six hours. For the price of one or two gels you can often get a box.
Happy New Year! And this is so cool seeing you cycling around there and staying in the Niland hotel haha! I used to spend my winters in the Slabs when I was out hitchhiking in my 20's. When you were there I believe a couple buddies were staying at East Jesus(Mopar and Marty). Excited to see your next video with you adventure in the Slabs!
Loved the "campground" - CA deserts, nothing quite like them, haha. That aside, it's a new CA law that vehicles must move over a lane (if possible) when passing a person on a bike. It might take a few decades for drivers to realize and actually obey the law, but at least it's a start.
Great tour of Cali's desert underbelly. That Mad Max factory was some sort of food processing plant, yum! Your bike is a wonder machine, but not all bikes can handle all surfaces. The $75 benchmark in US Western Motels can take some interesting turns and just my class of travel. Great production and as always, love your storytelling,.
Congratulations on the book. I tried to take the Bradshaw Trail but the gravel was too much for me, before I even got to the sand. I went along the canal, which was nice. I will be back to try again some day. I went to Yuma from the OC. I stayed in the same hotel in Niland, same room! The guy was so nice there. Burrito place was closed already, so I went to the ancient grocery store.
Happy New Year! - looking forward to more awesome rides and scenic views...as always.. You motivated me to get off my couch, Buy a bike and go out and ride > Xioxingwan bay in China, it is so amazing here, so much to see and beautiful South China Sea rides every weekend. Thank-you so much
It has been so much fun to watch you ride through southern California. I have a house in Dessert Hot Springs and have done some riding in that area. You're there at a perfect time, its insanely hog in the summer.
We have a place near Ranchita, you could have camped at our place, except you would have had to hike up a mountain. It's very interesting to see the desert from the point of view of a bicycle, you see a lot more details. Great videos!
Your videos make me happy when I’m in a bummer mood. Thanks! Strange craving for a bean burrito. I think I might link bean burritos to happier moods. That sounds hilariously delicious. 😅
Happy New Years to you and your loved ones. Enjoying your warm, sunny video with a hot cup of coffee AND 2 Principe cookies to dunk! 😋. What are the odds. 😆 2023 will be awesome.
Sorry to tell you this, but the best date shakes are in the Coachella Valley. Where they were grown first, besides the middle east. We have date shekes way before Westmoreland. You need to ride through the Coachella Valley. If you do, DM me. I'll give you a place to recharge.
Happy New Year and as always, awesome video! This video series was especially of interest to us because we're a two person team and half of our team is from the Coachella Valley and other half loves Principe galletas! haha.
What a day. That RV park was so sketchy. Never heard of a date shake. Love dates. Thanks for another great video. We're lucky to live in a country with so many diverse areas to explore. Take care, Al
Great video Ryan. I live in San Diego but lived and worked in Imperial Valley in the late '70s and early 80's. I drove all over the valley during that time and It brings back a lot of good memories. Thanks
I understand what you were saying about the traffic noise, I commute by bike along some busy roads and the noise physically hits me, it was a real shock when I first started. My theory is it drives the popularity of Gravel and MTB.
Nice vid, Ryan - great book if you want the full background on Salton Sea is "Salt Dreams" by William deBuys. One of my favorites - funny that a broken, flooded canal in 1905 RE-created an inland sea. A fascinating area - glad you made it safely there and back and that you shared this area with folks unfamiliar with it. Rock on...
Nice coyote fly by video bomb at @1:04. Your penny find gave me an idea. When I find one, map the location and then put it in a money book with a note. Go back after a couple of decades or hand it down to family would be pretty neat. See all the places you've found money on a ride. Happy New Year Ryan!
What an interesting experience and place/story. I've driven all over that area myself. Gotta listen to your gut like you did, if that camp area didn't look good, ya have to move on. Happy New Year my friend!
G'day Ryan 🦘 Happy new year!!!! Great way to start the year with your video 👍 May 2023 bring love laughter and contentment into your life. Peace ☮️ love 🌈 and gratitude P.T🤠
I got your book today, Ryan. OMG, your comment on the first page about asking your mom permission for any reproduction was priceless. Am I the only nerd that reads this portion of the book?? And the Chipolte Gift card portion also put a smile on my face. Can’t wait to get into the guts of it. ❤❤
Awesome video Ryan, spectacular scenery at times👌I think you made the right choice sticking to tarmac to recover after that brutal 20 miler, looking forward to the next instalment👍
What an inspiration! Episode 4 populated in my feed and I sat and watched it. I live in lake havasu city and am an avid cyclist, streets and trails with a couple of fun groups of people. Bicycle riding in the desert is a big interest of mine. I will have to find the other related episodes and follow up with this adventure. Safe travels to you and the wind at your back.
Feliz Año Nuevo 2023 Ryan!!! I’ve been trying to convince my family to go and see those sculptures in Anza-Borrego, but the drive is almost 3 hrs (6hrs out and back) maybe I should kind of lie to get them there 😆😆😆. Have a great year Ryan, say hello to shadow Ryan also 😆. Abrazos
Hey Ryan, growing up in Colorado, did you learn Spanish in high school, or did you learn it later, as an adult, on your own? I do remember that you spent some time as a high school student in Sweden. So that would make you (at least) trilingual!
It's always a good day when I see you've shared a new video! Thank you for inspiring us with your adventures, as soon as I finish typing this I'm planning my next bike adventure. Happy New Year! :D
Cracking up reading the health benefits of dates behind you at 10:50...healthy bowel movements, so that's a good thing. And the one above that. "When ingested orally..." I can only imagine other ways of getting dates into your body. Do people smoke those things? BTW, your book was waiting for me when I returned from a few days of hiking near Asheville, NC!
HAPPY NEW YEAR Ryan. It's been a great year, and I am looking for this next year to be even better. You never cease to inspire me to do more. So, thank you for that, I am eternally grateful. Thumbs up always.
