When I were a lad, it was a privilege, not a right, to ride to school. It was only permitted AFTER passing the cycling proficiency test. Any bad cycling or misbehaviour would result in this privilege being revoked. It is not the 1950's, so it is about time we now had mandatory training for cyclists, before they are allowed to ride on the public roads.

If have been tempted to ride after the kid and just have a little chat about being more careful with observations. The lorry driver did such a good job that the kid might not realise the severity of the mistake he made.
@hebijirik
@hebijirik Год назад
I can tell you it was pretty chilling. It looked even more scary in person than it does in the video. Maybe because of wide angle camera lens or something, I am not sure. What might have helped the lorry driver to do such a great job is that the long straight he came from has a 50 km/h speed limit and right where the little cyclist was is a sign reducing this to 30 km/h. Also a lorry of this size needs to obey this sign because of the bends of the road. So the driver probably saw the child when their foot was already on the brake pedal and just a quick reaction in pressing it harder was what they needed to do to solve the problem this well. What might have made it worse for the little guy is that the roads do not meet at a right angle but a more sharp one. So the lorry was coming not just from the left but also a bit from behind. The stop sign there rather than just yield sign is very justified. I think he must have had some instruction on how to ride on a road because of the extremely propper signaling with his right hand. Unfortunately he remembered this and not that he needs to look both ways before entering the intersection.

I do appreciate the point Ash makes. However, the bike was crossing at a junction and according to the road priorities would have priority in this case. In principle therefore, the driver of the car should be prepared for someone to be crossing. That's not to say that the bike shouldn't have been a bit more careful. However, I do try to keep in mind the goal behind the rule changes is to make negotiating junctions easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

I'm a secondary teacher and have seen my fair share of accidents outside the gates. (Nothing life-threatening thankfully, just a few bruises and one broken arm). The general rule is that, yes the child may be at fault but ultimately they are a child and you as an adult driver should expect them to make more mistakes and allow yourself more reaction time. Accidents will never go away but driving slowly at school time will mean more bumps and bruises and fewer trips to the hospital.

The clip around 1:00 to 1:20, the direction the cyclist was coming from is a no right turn junction. To go right there, they should have turned at the road before to come out further along. There are extremely few places you could be heading to on the way down that hill where there isn't a more efficient route than turning right there which is why the option is removed to improve flow in other directions for the majority

Just this week I was in a 44t artic, delivering food to a well know shop in Plymouth Arcade. It's private land, not ruled by road markings or signs! It is a pedestrian area and cycles are allowed. The entrance to the service area is narrow, so I have to approach from the right side of the paved area. I have my lights and hazards on, doing maybe 5mph! So, I'm lined up to turn into narrow entrance, I see a cyclist coming directly towards me, travelling at 20+mph!! I'm slowing down, he then starts yelling 'OUT THE WAY, MAKE ROOM!!' He has approximately 10 feet of pavement to his left, with no one else to share the space with! He decides to get as close as possible and runs his hand down the side of my trailer! I stopped at that point! All I could think is that moron is so entitled he has knowingly put himself in the most dangerous area, just so he can call me a shit driver!! It's these very people we have to look after, because they can't look after themselves! I did report it as a near miss at work, just incase he reports me and has 'damming video evidence'! We have cameras on all our vehicles thankfully! My question is this.....why are these personality types even allowed on our roads? They ruin it for everyone else!

Clip 9 - that is almost the scenario I had some 30 odd years ago when picking up my pre-school daughter from nursery - cars had stopped from both directions and we had started to cross with the green man , when an idiot on a bike came speeding down the middle of the road paying no attention to the crossing ; all at once I hauled my daughter back out of the way and instinctively jabbed my brolly forwards , which was in my other hand - more due to luck than anything else , the brolly went through the spokes of his front wheel and sent him over the handlebars , to applause and cheers from all the other parents ( this was right outside the nursery and there were signs warning of the nursery ) . My brolly was completely ruined and his wheel was buckled . I said to the cyclist just try going to the police about that - there are dozens of witnesses . Anyway , when I got home I called the police anyway and described what had happened - they told me not to worry and that if he tried to complain he would be charged . Anyway , they sent an officer round the next day at coming out time and statements were taken from several of the parents , all of whom had young children and therefore sided with me .

That young lad falling over reminded me of something that happened years ago. We were driving down a residential road and about to turn right and there was a cyclist (maybe about 14 years old or so) riding down the pavement on the right. I asked my pupil whether they thought the cyclist might just ride across the junction, in front of us, as we were turning. My pupil asked, "what cyclist?" The cyclist didn't cross the junction and, instead, turned right, however, as we drove down the new road, he did then cycle out, behind a car parked on the pavement, in front of us and tried to make it up a lowered kerb that was partially obscured by a silver Vauxhall on the other side. He didn't make it and literally went head over heels, but, miraculously, spun all the way around and came up with little "ray" (presumably short for "hooray"), both hands in the air, but clearly embarrassed.

The law has failed to deal with speed pedelecs for some time. Some decent investment in fast, legal ebikes would help to bridge the gap between the stupidity of us all driving cars clogging up the roads, and the effort/difficulty involved in cycling on British hills and roads. 250 W ebikes are slow, you basically can't make your own legal speed ped without mountains of paperwork and jumping through hoops, and if you want to buy one with a plate registration and insurance you have to spend the price of a small car. So people decide it's very little risk to mod their own for £400 and now you have the problem of people doing 30 mph through city centres with no ID ignoring traffic laws.

It's fairly common to see dangerously parked parents saying they do it to protect their kids from the "traffic", with a mental block on the inconvenient fact that they themselves comprise that dangerous traffic. On this one it is an advisory cycle lane as we know, so they are allowed to park there subject to anything I have not noticed. I hate advisory cycle lanes because they are taken as a reason for motor vehicles to drive a few cm outside the dashed white line, ignoring the 1.5m rule - to the extent that certain police forces use them as an excuse for not prosecuting dangerous close passes. There is currently a suggestion around to remove them all, as cycling on the carriageway would be much safer. I support that. @4:30 What do people think of the five cars within 100 meters parked over that cycle lane? For me, it neatly demonstrates the derision and contempt so many motorists (and police) have for cyclists. I've often seen police parked over cycle lanes too. In most towns, most of the cycle lanes aren't even official routes, and have no force in law, meaning that after 6pm when parking restrictions disappear, these 'suggested' cycle lanes become parking spaces. Either we have cycle lanes or we don't. The current situation, where motorists ignore them, police ignore motorists blocking them, and cyclists are used to being unable to use them is clearly mad, but until police start fining the *MILLIONS* of motorists happily using them as parking, we'll continue to have pointless deaths along routes we KNOW are dangerous for cyclists, because we have made them even more dangerous. Seriously, how many motorists shout at cyclists to get in the cycle lane, assuming they MUST use it if one is available, but then assume it's OK for them to park over the same cycle lane if they want, because there's no law against it? If they blocked a bus lane like that they'd not only be fined, they'd be towed within the hour. Why are so many motorists OK with treating cyclists so unfairly?

I started cycling at a very early age, when I was 15 a day's ride would start cycling down to Pier Head on the ferry and meet up with everyone at Two Mills on the Wirral. 12 hours later I would get home with about 150 miles behind me. Obeying the Highway Code and being courteous kept me safe. I now live in an area I used to cycle through on those Sunday rides. Young and older cyclists do not seem to be aware of how to stay. When I was in Primary School Liverpool City Council sent road safety instructors to teach us how to stay safe, everyone who could ride did the cycling proficiency course. Simple things but life saving, such as always start pedalling with the roadside pedal. That way the force you are exerting will push you onto the pavement if you fall. Rules about how, when and what lighting to use. As well as the highway code. I now live in a rural village which has little to no street lighting, as well as high speed roads. Yet the cyclists fall into two categories, the camouflaged suicidal cyclists or you'll see me if I have to burn out your retinas. The former are dressed in black or very dark colours, their cycles have no lights or reflectors of any sort, they rarely follow the highway code preferring to cycle how they want and where they want after dark. The latter have reflective Scotchlite jackets, leg and armbands, their lights are usually extremely bright two or three to the front usually flashing and an extra bright one on their helmet. To the rear along with reflectors galore will be a high intensity flashing red light. The helmet lights break the law as they usually exceed the permitted maximum height for cycle lights. The former are the real problem, I invariably have three or four near misses with this type every week. They ride on pavements, on the wrong side of the road and in the wrong direction on one way streets and blowing through stop signs (usually on national speed limit roads). I am fortunate, having advanced driver training as well as emergency driving I have been taught to look out for the unexpected. The police do not seem to pay any attention to them until they are on a postmortem slab. I honestly believe that with the police services attitude not even attempting to stop and educate these cyclists, if a cyclist who has no lights or reflectors (they removed them) is hit by a vehicle it must be ruled the cyclists fault. Regarding the cyclists footage at 2:10 onwards, a couple of points I don't agree with. Suggesting the cyclist is making something of nothing, when there is a vehicle hanging over the junction into the main carriageway is poor from the driver. Then, they pass in lane 2 at the EXACT moment the cyclist is having to negotiate another car that's edged out and is cutting access off to the entirety of lane 1. The car driver is behind the cyclist, and clearly cannot give 1.5m of space to pass. Why do you suggest the cyclist should actually slow down and allow the car(s) to pass them? 3:39 I don't think the motorist has blame there. You should distinctively NOT be spending time looking where the cyclist is coming from. You'll be busy enough looking for traffic on the roundabout itself, and for traffic stopping in front of you. Then your mirror to see nobody behind you is going to swipe you. Nobody is normally going to come from your 8 o'clock position (i.e. slightly behind you), especially given that this is also the wrong way on the roundabout. 5:23 not sure if that roundabout needs to be that wide. It would be better to have some buffer between the cycle path and the road. This is not just greenspace, but an essential design element. It would create a less acute angle between exiting traffic and the cycle path. You can then see any cyclists through your side window. Note how on a Dutch roundabout you can correctly give way to cyclists without using the mirrors. Also, did you notice where the stop line is, and how the centre line continues straight over the path? Details like that give show the contempt for pedestrians and cyclists in our road designs.

That's easy when you have brand-new roads and housing developments, but by far the bulk of Britain's urban infrastructure dates from the Victorian or Edwardian periods when building density was much greater. Rules : for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men - origin Royal Air Force during WWII Re the cyclist who crossed the wrong way at the roundabout and rode in front of the car ; two lessons for the cyclist who I would place primarily at fault here : 1) Drivers entering a roundabout are primarily looking right for their gap in the traffic ; their other concern is that the vehicle in front has properly moved off and does not stop unexpectedly . 2) that cyclist is essentially going the wrong way round the roundabout - even if the footway is a shared space he should not be cycling contrary to the flow of traffic , and most properly should be cycling on the road , going around the roundabout in the correct direction . While I seldom cycle on the roads , on rare occasions that I do , I will take to the footways , which by default are shared spaces unless signed otherwise , but one place I do not cycle not the footways , is through roundabouts , where I cycle on the road , because it is actually safer , and that clip shows exactly why . Apart from the little boy in one of the Scandic countries , and even the boys coming out of the school ( showing off to the girls ? ) , pretty much all of those cyclists were endangering themselves , sometimes trying to score points - rights or wrongs aside , they are the ones who are going to get hurt . Agreed with the two clips of the cars turning out of the side roads in Liverpool. Granted, the first one should’ve held back more especially with the vehicle emerging from the parked cars but aren’t the rules the same for everyone that decides to change lanes (which the cyclist did) is not a given and should be done safely? Hold back and all is good. Same with the second one, plenty of time to see the vehicle encroaching the lane so hold back, give them space to see and manoeuvre and you will be on your way. Chances are you would’ve been at the lights as they changed to green and wouldve at the next hold up or destination quicker. I wonder if the rider on the recumbent was the parent but if that had been one of my children , I'd have been calling out that that junction had a STOP sign and a solid line - therefore you HAVE to stop . That is no doubt there because of limited visibility to the left . When I was young , EVERYONE at all primary schools , unless disabled , went through the National Cycling Proficiency test in P7 , before going up to high school - the training was given jointly by the police and fire brigade . I know there is now a bike ability scheme , but this is far from universal . To my mind , no child should be allowed loose on the road without supervision without first having training and passed the course - I'd even go so far as to make bicycles another category on the driving licence , and that young people should get a free licence with 'cycle only' category as soon as they pass the test . As they get older , they just get additional categories added to their licence when the pass the required tests . This wouldn't be such a huge task since most people learn to drive anyway , and the licence would also serve as an ID card for young people . Drivers could be encouraged to take the cycle test also and have the category added to their driving licences ; in fact it would not be amiss to mandate a cycle pass before going on to motorised transport .

Same reason why some motorists think it okay to drive through a red light. Cyclists are not special in that regard, it's done because the road user can and they don't want to stop.

The other thing to watch for is a cyclist, on the pavement probably doing 15MPH or more, sudden;y deciding to cross a zebra crossing.

sometimes it can actually be safer if you can clear a junction before the main surge of traffic - ideally all lights would have a cycle phase a few seconds before the main phase

Graham, Law-abiding cyclists don't understand other cyclists that go through red lights either.

01:22 The viewer either didnt see the cyclist or deliberately did not slow down. The horn use was to rebuke the cyclist , not get them to stop as too late. 07:28 If his parents saw this?

Your clip at around14:00 highlighted an issue that has become very common. Look at the number of cars parked across the marked cycle way as well as obstructing the pavement.

Perfectly legal to park , or drive , if the lane is bordered by a broken line .

For the London Clip with a sidewalk UK & Australia terminology pavement, what the cyclists should have done was actually go up to the light controlled Pelican/Toucan crossing then press the button to cross. Here in the United States, newer ones will say wait then cross the road. The last clip from Czech Republic what should have been done was first use hand signal for stop waiting for the Leyland DAF lorry to go first then right turn hand signal

I did my cycling proficiency at primary school. School children these days have no road sense. I like to think of myself as a considerate cyclist. I wear orange hi-vis and have working lights on my bike. I am amazed at the number of car drivers who cannot overtake a cyclist. All you need is 5 feet. As a pedestrian I hate cyclists riding on the pavement and the ones who think I should give way to them on a shared path. Edinburgh's cyclists are both deaf and blind.

2:08 Yeah, just seems like a normal day cycling on cycle-unfriendly infrastructure. As a cyclist I will say that cars poking out of junctions like that is rather annoying and disconcerting, even if they probably were just trying to see around the ridiculous amount of street furniture. Annoying because it forces me to the right into traffic. Disconcerting because often it is done through impatience, which means I associate the behaviour with cars being unpredictable -- are they going to pull out or wait for a cyclist if they're in that much of a hurry? That said, the Ford pulling out of the space (trying to see around the corner) was much more concerning as their mirror was no longer aligned with the road -- can they see me coming or not? Dropping in behind the overtaking car would have been instinctive, that it was the car from just before wouldn't have mattered, and that they shouldn't have overtaken wouldn't have registered in the moment. 2:55 I agree completely here. The light is red just let them out, good grief! I'd rather be rolling anyway so it'd give me an excuse not to stop for the light.

1:09 - "it's still the job of us motorists to look after them", still the job us the NHS to "fix them up" when somebody doesn't. Ultimately society picks up the pieces. I don't know why people just can't be responsible for their own conduct and take their own personal safety a bit more seriously.

Whilst you suggest we should fix other peoples mistakes( a sound strategy), there are very few mistakes in this video. These cyclists know exactly what they are doing.

My biggest annoyance with cyclists is when they go through red lights. Last time I was driving in Cambridge I nearly hit three different cyclists because they'd gone through red lights into incoming traffic (IE me).

That first clip is my bug bear people cutting T junctions. My road exit is from a side onto a main road and people CONSTANTLY cut it and it's very infuriating. Luckily thanks to these vids and my constant exposure I'm very wary of T Junctions now

I know who you mean. I wouldn't say he is Ashley's opposite because I think he's a good driver; in most of his clips his driving defuses events. His resentment comes out in the live commentary. Both he and Ash anticipate other road users doing stupid things, but he seems to be surprised and demoralised each time it happens. For a professional driver, that must be grim. I wonder what he'd make of Ashley's All Jon videos.

As a motorcyclist, having to go through all the training and passing tests to get on the road, it really annoys me to see these converted electric bicycles or ones purpose built like the Surron on the road with the riders wearing no protection, no reg and likely not having a license.

3:10 he also had a red light in front. And to make a scene had to stop. So didn't achieve anything, if there was no car he would have to slow down anyway, gained nothing but frustration. What's the point :)
