I'm a Vietnam vet and old school. I didn't know where she was going with the song and she sang it so beautifully , her way. I loved it, and it left me in tears. Thank you Cyndi !
OMG was she was using the echo from the stadium and the reverb from the broadcast delay as her background singers? Excuse me while I get a bong and some headphones....
She did sing it beautifully but I think sometimes 'artists' take a little too much liberty with our anthem. People come to watch the game and players come to play...nobody came to watch someone's version of the anthem. She sang it well, though.
She’s one of the few that I can accept putting her spin on this song. Because it’s respectfully, and beautifully done. She makes it about the song , not how many runs she can put in. Well done!
I'm hijacking this comment. Cyndi Lauper killed this, but many in this thread are unaware that this is a cover. This is not her interpretation of 'the Star Spangled Banner', it's her cover of Marvin Gaye's interpretation of 'the Star Spangled Banner'. She follows the exact same beats, and hits every note he hit and she KILLS IT! Mad props to her for doing it, but let's give ol' Marvin some credit here as well. I think Cyndi Lauper sang this less as a rendition of the National Anthem, and more as a tribute to Marvin Gaye. here's Marvin's version - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QNydcwDriuU.html
@@coreyjudd4676 You're probably right about the tribute. And she did one beautiful job of it. Seemed like she decided not to try and hit the high notes as much as she usually does but I have a feeling she didn't want to take any chance of her voice cracking for this one. I'm just guessing because I know she can hit those high notes with unbelievable ease. And for the person commenting on the spelling of her name, lol. She spells it Cyndi Lauper, yes indeed.
I've adored Cyndi for decades and being a Queens native myself I appreciate her just showing up. I particularly note how the back beat totally deceived my ears into expecting something completely different and then she actually sings very conservatively. A great presentation by a great artist. Thank you Cyndi !
Yeah, I was ready to read her the riot act when it first started but by the end I was just sitting here with my mouth open and tears running down my cheeks.
With the monotonic beat backing like that it is VERY easy to miss a beat or a phrase and she would've been destroyed and shamed for life. That's some talent! I can see why she asked the camera to back off.
dope. i always love it. it starts out and i'm like, "uh oh.", then by the end i'm just feeling her groove. totally artistic, totally unique, and totally awesome. sounds like cyndi lauper to me.
Beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. I usually don't like when people try to change the song up, but she did an amazing job. Thank you Cyndi for doing this so respectfully. God Bless our military, those who put their lives on the line so we can live free.
That's exactly what I thought while watching it. Her rendition is funky, but in a balanced way that's faithful to the song. She puts the Cyndi Lauper touch on it, but doesn't go overboard with too many vocal acrobatics or flourishes the way many singers seem to like to. Pretty moving stuff.
What a fabulous rendition! I’ve watched Linda Ronstadt’s and Whitney Houston’s equally fabulous renditions but this Cyndi Lauper gem is the one that gave me goosebumps.
She is so gracious and beautiful. This is the best version of our national anthem that I have ever heard. I love it and I love her beautiful voice and style 💕
Beautiful vocals and arrangement. Even though the fans were mostly into the baseball game, you could hear from some of their reactions at the end of Cyndi singing that they were moved greatly by this performance.
Best version of the national anthem ever! Cyndi never received the credit she deserved for this performance. So original as with all of her work. Even though she changed up the melody and tempo a bit, she kept the anthem in its original format - with a beautiful sound. Thanks Cyndi.
Mann .... That was Amazing. People of all races stood no matter what and appreciated that. The world needs this right now .. America needs this right now.
I completely agree with you . That was a lot of things , but that angelic loyalty definitely one of the best performer’s . We need to come together and be strong. The best way we can be .
im not American. And i dont most Americans. But this Perfection makes me want to join the Army. Just perfect. The Gaga version which lead me here was super cringy. This was Flawless.
Cyndi Lauper is an eternal idol. We love Cyndi Lauper . No singer has healed my heart as much as Cyndi Lauper . I still vividly remember the overly beautiful Cyndi Lauper I saw at the Budokan in September 1986.
She slams this out of the park...great style. Angelic voice...she is so fucken cute..I love her.i will listen to this over and over again..got me tear she capivtated this crowd
Awesome. I’ve always thought Whitney Houston’s was the best. This is the first time I’ve ever heard this. Just absolutely beautiful. Both versions are the best. And how hard it must’ve been to put it to music and still make it sound like that. Not going to lie it left me eyes moist
so powerful without being overtly powerful in volume! What an angelic voice! And I'm glad they showed that guy at the end looking at Cyndi, he truly got it and enjoyed her honoring our country. Wish I was there to cheer her back then, too.
Of course she did, she's an incredible talent :) It's also gotta be the most unique, beautiful, and understated renditions I've heard. Most singers use the opportunity to have "big" moments and show off their technical capabilities. Cyndi is always about singing from the heart, and interpreting the words in an honest and sincere way.
Ohhhhh,.. that was so very beautiful ! Love this version better than any I've ever heard. Awesome Cyndi !! Your a beautiful lady & you sing incredibly as beautiful 😘
Cyndi....you can take any song and make it your own - including a National Anthem. You are a timeless artist and angel. Thank you for your gift. P E R F E C T I O N!
Here in 2021!!! I just have to say,,,,I'm speechless.... even brought tears to my eyes! Back in 94 I was a young man in my twenties and although I was a Cindy Lauper fan, I had never heard her sing our beloved national anthem. Until now,,,,that was amazing!!!! Don't ask me how I got here... Lol. Stay safe everyone!
It was back on April 11, 1994; life was a little easier then. Anyway Cindi's version of the US national anthem is among the best ever, I remember seeing it live.
Very nice indeed. With Cyndi being known for being "so unusual" this was unexpected. What was also nice was that she didn't decide that some single syllable words should suddenly be 5-6 syllables which consist of different levels of howling.
Her voice is just increadible. People remember when she sang at this game, to this day, in 2020! Her voice was equally powerful when she sang with USA for Africa. Thank you Cindy for being you!😀
This is beautiful - Cyndi Lauper is the real deal. And the slow pace of the delivery allows the words to really sink in. And make you realize how beautiful the words really are. Perfect.
Why does it matter what nationality you are? Does it make your comment have more or less value, because of your country of origin? Just asking...as I would like to know,” lol.
