The Glock 34 was king of the competition circuit until about 2012 when the Tanfoglio Stock 2 and the CZ SP-01 started building popularity. We take a look at two titans of competition shooting.
Both the Glock 34 and the CZ SP-01 have traded spots at the top of the Nationals equipment survey. The CZ being favored in USPSA / IPSC and the Glock being favored in IDPA. They're both fantastic pistols well suited to competition, we take a closer look on them both. Stick around to the end for 120 FPS slow motion watching the guns in recoil.

Having owned both, and shot both in steel and USPSA,.. the CZ is the way to go. Tune it up with an extended firing pin and lighter hammer spring and it really runs fast and is easy to shoot. Happy runnin & gunnin,.. :)

I actually did the opposite - did CZs for like 3 years - switched to carry optics going back to a Glock. At a certain point - the performance is identical. There is no question the CZs are easier to shoot up until that point.

@@That1_CopDude yea, that's a bit confusing but I'll try to shed some light on this one year later... 😂 I think what he's getting at is that once you reach a certain level of proficiency you aren't squeezing out any extra performance from the gun itself anymore, it's all you. And when the gun isn't helping anymore, it then turns into a preference and it sounds like he prefers the Glock. Maybe 🤏

Great video, couple corrections.. the shadow comes in grey with a black slide as well. Also the cz is used by 2/3 of competition shooters including most of the top guys out there such as angus. I tried running a g34 but hated the trigger. The tab would actually dig into my finger. Also the knuckle as you mentioned. The cz is a huge improvement in my opinion

+younggunner89 until recently the duo tone was imported very very rarely, like the first run in two years showed up at CZC last month. At USPSA production mats last year the CZ brand represented 35% of shooters. The Tanfo is rising in popularity due to its great frame and took some of CZs market share, as 2015 nationals reported 40% CZs used. While a lot of good shooters use CZs, Tanfo has won the last 6 nationals with a few CZs in the top 16, about as many 34s as CZs if we are honest. It's a super popular quality gun but i would jump on a shadow 2 or a Tanfo Stock 2 if I had new gun money today

I've fired my brother's Glock 17 several times, and while I do enjoy shooting it I can imagine the CZ would be more ergonomic. He keeps telling me to get a Glock like him, but I've been telling him that once I finally get my hands on a CZ he'll understand why. The guy at the gunstore has been on the lookout for me for a few weeks now. Also I've been scouring online for a while. I almost wonder if CZ stopped making their steel guns, they're so hard to find. I think they're focusing all attention on the P10C. Whatever. Yeah, I want to increase the chance of shooting myself on the leg someday, that sounds nice.

Have you had any issues with yours? I just bought my first CZ a few days ago.. an SP-01 manual safety. I ran 200rds of Federal Brass 115gr FMJ and had 2 failures to feed. Today I ran 300rds of Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ and had 2 failures to feed again. All four times the rounds were pointing upward at such a sharp angle they did not feed into the chamber, twice with almost a full mag and twice with about the mag half empty. I have heard the factory mag springs are weak but seeng that the FTF's did not occur on the last few rounds I'm not sure if thats the issue. The pistol is stock and I'm using the factory 18rd mags. I assumed the failures were due to it being a new gun and it just needs to be broken-in, so I did not take note if the FTF's were with the same mag. That being said.. I love the way it feels in the hand and I love how it shoots!

I just stumbled across your video...great analysis of the subject matter. Your replies to questions are also very informative and its quite remarkable that you take the time to share your wealth of knowledge. Very much appreciated. I'm having trouble deciding on my next purchase...legion p226 or legion p320 x-five (both with optics). I currently own a sig m11, which is used for car travel, hiking (cougar/black bear suppressant) and potential home defense. I never really liked the feel of the Glocks in the past. Im looking to become more proficient with shooting and was hoping my next purchase could help me achieve the next levels in marksmanship. I like the feel of a metal gun and can see the benefits of a da/sa esp, however with practice! Is the p320 x-five a much easier gun to gain skills in the mastery of shooting compared to the p226? Is it as reliable? What are your recommendations (by your previous comments (and pretaining to my situation as having limited time), I have eliminated the cz shadow2 as it takes to much maintenance, Glocks as it takes too much after market custom jobs, etc)

@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 6 лет назад
I assume you're talking about the AccuShadow BLK? With the australian barrel that is proud of the bushing by a little bit? The action work would be the same as the AccuShadow or Shadow Custom. The extra barrel will get you a tiny bit of velocity on your ammo and maybe a little more accuracy over a regular AccuShadow - but I wouldn't pay the upcharge personally for one. Honestly - I wouldn't buy a Shadow Custom over a Shadow 2 now unless you want to play IDPA. The shadow 2 can be made comparable on trigger with very little outlay on parts - an extended firing pin and reduced power springs will cover it.

Is it true you should snap caps when dry firing CZ? I have heard that you can damage firing pin. As opposed to striker fire pistols... you can dry fire them all day. You seem to be the guy to ask! Nice vids!
@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 6 лет назад
The firing pin block models need snap caps or an o- ring. The shadows/ PreB models don’t care much. I recommend using one on all pistols for extensive dryfire. Any gun that uses a roll pin to retain the striker needs a snap cap. Glocks need snap caps because you can shatter the breech face - which is significantly more serious than a 5$ roll pin.
@kittrainbow7
@kittrainbow7 6 лет назад
TheHumbleMarksman My new g34 gen4 self destroyed in less than a year by opening the breech face (dry practise), I have always used snap caps, ordinary frequency. On all my other pistols (dan wesson, tanfoglio and sti) I have never had such a main failure. I had only changed 1 firing pin on my DW 45 and 2 fp on my tanfoglio (1 for better design, to increase ignition reliability ) and they shot way more than the glock. Also my long guns (ar15, ar9) never broke main parts, in such a short time, shooting + dry practise. Sometimes is better to invest in quality.

Great comparison and great conclusion. TL;DR: You're gonna spend a lot of time with which ever one you pick so you should like it. It's almost like the Glock's simplicity eventually works against it over time which leads to people chasing 'something else'. You know I never did enough dryfire with the Glock because I never got Glock knuckle!

I love my simple Glock pistols and I've owned and sold dozens of handguns in an expensive quest trying to find excalibur. There are only 3 pistols I've ever disassembled 100% to their individual parts: Glock, Beretta M9, and 1911 and the Glock was by far the most impressive in its simplicity. That's not everything, but to me its significant and increases my confidence that I can keep my Glocks running in perpetuity and I will never need access to a Gunsmith to do so.

@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 5 лет назад
So with good technique - literally almost anything will do. I assume you want a 9mm. I "downgraded" from the Shadow 2s to the Gen 5 34's because they're more flexible. The M&P m2.0 5" can be bought for a song and is awesome. Sig Sauer X Five they have sorted out now and it's pretty great. Walther Q5 is great. My top 2 choices would be the gen 5 34 (one of the new ones with front serrations) or a Sig Sauer P320 X Five. For carry optics the P320 will be tied into the Romeo 1 optic - which has mixed reviews (and I'm about to mount on my match gun to experiment with). Pretty much any of the guns with Dawson sights are good to go. There's not an obvious " best". I chose the glocks because 1. they're inexpensive and virtually maintenance free. 2. Magazines are stupid cheap. 3. Their CO platform allows backup iron sights. 4. I proved it to myself the guns didn't matter. If the M2.0 was available optics ready I'd have gone that way. The new P10F may be worth considering. in IDPA the 34 is soooo prevalent it's tough to ignore. In USPSA the CZs are super popular - so again a good choice if something were to go wrong - you could borrow someone else's gun and be squared away. Regardless - pick a gun that makes sense in both IDPA and USPSA - you may only shoot one now - but you may expand into the other eventually. Feel free to shoot me an email and I'm happy to discuss it with you. thehumblemarksman at gmail dot com

Are you shooting the CZ in production or Limited? If production, is it true you have to start with DA trigger pull?
@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 7 лет назад
The CZ 9's are generally "Production" guns, which means the manual safety models must be fully decocked. If you get an extended firing pin and reduce the hammer spring weight to 11.5# or 13# the DA is very manageable. With some practice you don't even notice it.
@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 7 лет назад
I have a video on decocking the guns. If you're shooting a CZ in production, having a comp hammer is very advantageous to safely decock despite the large rear target sight it's likely wearing. The ring hammer works OK with the lame sights that come on most of the 75s, but if you get a proper target rear then you'll find your thumb running out of real estate pretty quick.

They both are pretty problem free. The glock has fewer maintenance parts - but the level of refinement is also lower. If you're shooting IPSC then CZ is your huckle berry - just know you're on the hook for a firing pin spring, slide stop, trigger return spring every year. If you're talking USPSA/IDPA then the Glock becomes a real contender. Either one can stand up to many thousands of rounds - CZ will just burn up a few more parts in the process.

@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 6 лет назад
I'm actually in the process of building a carry optic gun - I won't spill the beans on what I'm building just yet, BUT it depends how much you want to spend. Inexpensively - you could buy a Canik TP9SFX with a Vortex Venom on it for like $650 and be off to the races. For slightly more you could do a P320 RX (I would advocate for this over the XFive because there are no backup irons on the XFive - just a super shallow dot on the Romeo 1, and the Romeo 1 is somewhat fragile - still probably serviceable for competition.), The Walther Q5 Match, or a Glock 17/34 MOS. I wanted to use the Leupold Deltapoint Pro - so the P320RX was off the table. You can make a Burris Fast Fire 3, Vortex Venom or Viper all work. The DPP has the biggest window and some of the best glass you can get. DPP is not quite as robust as the Trijicon RMR - but it's also about 60% of the price. The DPP will go through batteries quicker too - reports are all over the place - I'll update you guys with what I'm getting after I go through a couple. Glocks have the cheapest magazines and base plates - by a pretty wide margin (this matters for USPSA carry optics). Dawson Precision sells +5/6 baseplates for $32 shipped for the glock. Everyone else will have $40-50 base plates. You want 22+1 in the gun at a minimum. Glocks also have the cheap magpul 21 rounders that are like $20. Canik 21 rounders are maybe $30. Sig sells 21 rounders I think for $40-50. If you want those 2 extra rounds you'll have to buy base plates. The best scenario would be 23+1 - that would be 3 shooting positions in USPSA if you shoot clean (a position can only require 8 shots). For IDPA - it doesn't matter since your'e capped at 10+1. The "best" way would be to mill the slide of a gun to the optic you want. The problem is that adds about $125-150 to the cost of the pistol and you're married to that optic on that gun. I don't think MRDS are quite mature yet and I think the next generation will be appreciably better - so I wanted something that used mounting plates. At NRA this weekend I think Glock is going to drop the G17gen5 MOS and CZ may drop an optics ready gun as well - I think the P10C is already announced as optics ready. Hopefully they do a P09/P10 FULL SIZE that are ready to play.

TheHumbleMarksman my budget for my next gun is around shadow 2 pricing so 1100-1400 range
@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 6 лет назад
You could have pretty much any plastic gun you want for that price. - With a dot, mags, base plates, holster. Pretty much any gun seems to be 12-1300 with a Deltapoint Pro on it. so 100-200 for holsters and mag pouches are doable. I'd get a holster and mag set up that is legal for both games and just go nuts.

narrowed my choice to a g34 or czsp01 (non shadow). if I were to get the sp01, would you recommend safety model or decocker? (for range toy and competition)
@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 7 лет назад
+Johnny Kim the manual safety one is easier to work on and has a slightly better trigger, provided you are OK manually decocking the pistol. It's not hard to do but if it's a concern then the tactical is fine. If you go that route, be sure to buy MecGar magazines.

TheHumbleMarksman if you don't plan to ever carry it, is there ever a reason to manually decock it? I mean I heard you can start c&l for competitions...
@TheHumbleMarksman
@TheHumbleMarksman 7 лет назад
depends on which division you shoot. if you're shooting IDPA ESP or USPSA Limited you can start C&L. If you're shooting SSP or Production you need to start hammer down. If you want to shoot limited on a budget I'd recommend the P09 in 40.

My Glock 34 rubs my knuckle and the web of my hand raw. It has honestly made me consider switching platforms but at this point I’m way too invested in Glock. I’ll just have to man up.

Fernando Flores I totally get it. Switching isn’t easy and depending where you are as a shooter you may backslide... a lot of money and time to be certain

Wear a fingerless glove on your dominant hand when you're shooting. I've done that and it helped immensely.

Since my CZ 75B keeps breaking, I've shot my Glock 19 a LOT more, and I haven't gotten "Glock Knuckle" Maybe it's just me?

+Captain Ciph3r every gun and every hand is different. I am speaking on the level of dryfiring 15-1hr every day and shooting at least once a week.

Yeah, any time i'm at my computer, I'm dry firing my 19, and I get to shoot pretty much every day, at least a couple of magazines every time. No Glock knuckle that I can tell. Very good video though, that part just confused me, it was the first I've heard of it. I get 75B thumb though, the beavertail on my 75B rubs on the web of my thumb and leaves a red U shape, especially if I shoot with my thumb on the safety, which is what I instinctively do, due to a few years of shooting 1911s.

That's interesting, it might be how you're gripping your middle knuckle isn't rubbing. mine certainly did. I shot glocks in competition for about a year before moving on and I got a very pronounced callous on my middle finger, which is still visible to this day (nearly 3 years later). Several other guys I shoot with have that issue and the guy at the gun shop actually introduced me to the term. "Oh yeah Glock Knuckle"... I swear I didn't make it up! If you google it, there's no shortage of photos supporting it being something more than I just made up.
@CaptainCiph3r
@CaptainCiph3r 7 лет назад
Oh I believe you entirely, it's just the first i've heard of it. What I DO get is a callous on the inside of my middle finger joint, from gripping the gun and rubbing on those grip-bumps during draws. I squeeze the thing like I'm gonna break it though.
