CZUR ET24 vs Hackerspace Scanner

This past week I finally received the CZUR ET24 scanner that I purchased via their recent Indiegogo campaign. The ET24 is the first of their scanners that I feel meet the minimum requirements for doing good archival scans. Their prior offerings were just too low-resolution to provide a decent result.
In this video, I show how the ET24 works in comparison to my DIY "Hackerspace" book scanner.
The ET24 scan of the magazine can be found here:
annex.retroarchive.org/scans/s...
The Hackerspace Scanner scan of the same magazine can be found here:
archive.org/details/amazing-e...
The Internet Archive will create a number of different formats based on the uploaded source material. If you want to compare the two scanners more directly, you'll want to download the "CBZ" file - it's basically a normal zip file with a different file extension. The "format" is known as Comic Book Zip.

you can try magnets to hold the book to the mat while you flip pages.

As John K says, use the foot pedal. You do not need to hold the magazine flat because the system has curve fixing capabilities.

I was about to order the ET24 until I saw examples and demonstrations showing that they force JPEG rendering with artifacts around the text. And even using their "TIFF" format in fact is just converting the JPEGs back to TIFFs with all the artifacts still present. That seems like a terrible software or hardware design issue that should not had been overlooked. It's like they use a boilerplate camera sensor/SDK that only supports lossy JPEG, which is a bad thought when I'm trying to preserve the cleanest copies of books. Also the 320 vs. 350 DPI seemed undistinguishable from what I've seen, and their tech specs advertise optical as 320 DPI so I wonder if that's a software upscale thing to 350.

Use the foot pedal when you need to use the finger cots. Not all materials need the finger cots. The curve flattening is very good.

Excellent point.

Hi, thanks for this. Is it possible to scan a sheet that is larger than the specs? I understand the dpi value would decrease, but I wonder if the ET24 is able to focus on something that is a bit further than its usual height.

I wish i could, but I simply don't have the time. Sorry!

It has a feature to take two halves of e.g. a large map and glue them together. I don't see why you couldn't extend that to 4. Mine arrives tomorrow so I haven't tested anything myself.

I watched what you were doung, and you did not need to use the finger cots at all. You seem to be going out of your way to frustrate yourself.

It was *literally* the first time I had the thing out of the box.

Not a fan of scanning anything, I have no patience for it. Time for some engineering there, Gene to find a solution to holding the source material properly.

Nah. The Hackerspace Scanner is much more effective for doing scanned books than the ET24 (and similar) is. It's far less stressful on the book - it holds the book open at a 100 degree angle, instead of forcing it to 180 degrees like the ET* does.

seems that you are not cleaver enough to use this scanner. I've seen others do it much easier than you.

Maybe not, but at least I know how to spell "clever". 🤣
