NYXLs always. They're solid, last a long time, and break in nicely.

I have to agree. I've had them on a bass for a year and they still sound really good.

I've been playing half rounds on my Gibson EB0, I just LOVE the way it sounds and feels. At the beggining they're a little pain in the ass to break in, but once the'yre done, they're good to go and last ages!!

Outstanding bass string demonstration....wow...all those strings sounded great.. I am really interested in the half rounds. You definitely opened up my eyes. Thanks again.

I really liked the sound of the tape wound and half round strings. I use flats on my basses now. Maybe I need to experiment a bit...

You should really try these tapes. They're mellower than flats and your fingers don't stick to them. I'm speaking of these particular tapes, and not tapes in general. The nylon is scuffed up so that they don't feel like plastic. They almost feel like cloth. You can slide all day and have no finger issues.

I ordered my 1982 Carvin LB-50 bass with GHS Boomer Half Rounds and loved those strings, so half rounds have been available for quite some time.

NYXLs are currently my favourite strings. They are the only roundwound I've tried that sound good from new; you don't have to wait a few days for the overbright edge to go, like on most roundwounds.

These tape wounds are my favorite strings. They are mellower than the other brands that I've tried. And, if you read the back of the package, they advertise that they're mellower than their own flat wounds. I'm a sucker for that more upright sound. They don't feel like plastic either. I believe they go through some kind of scuffing process to make them a drier, smooth feel so that your fingers don't stick to them, due to more surface tension. They are also pretty forgiving if you have bad technique, like I do, when missing proper fretting positions. As, they give less of a buzz sound. I highly recommend that you try a set.

I use the D’Addario half rounds on one of my MM, and tape wounds on the other MM. Sound great. I haven’t tried the NYXL yet.

Nyxl sounds especially great on jazz basses and stingrays im my experience. Like a bit less complex timbre on pbasses.

I used custom light Pro Steels for a good decade, but these days I like the nickel wounds more because they last longer and there isn't such a huge tone differential between new and old strings

Been meaning to give the half-rounds a go on my fretless for quite some time. NYXL has been my roundwound set of choice on bass and guitar for the best part of a decade.

I think you guys have been doing a great job with string demos. It must be pretty tough to do because there aren't many good ones out there. Thanks for avoiding playing the same riff over and over again on different sets and just playing to the set's strengths.

I don't know if the NYXLs are different but my last three sets of regular nickel XLs could not be intonated. Notes above the 12th fret were sharp and notes below were flat (!). People had told me about this before but I'd not experienced this myself until recently. I used to like the versatility and warmth of XLs, but I'm sticking to SITs from now on- yes they do stay/play in tune all over the fretboard

I am currently playing those half rounds and I love them. They give that flat wound low end with a little crunchy mid range. Very nice sounding. They seem like they would be the perfect studio strings

Did you notice that first strings sounds much brighter while lower strings sounds dull, like 2 year old ones?

Always hated D'addario. Had to get the NYXL as those were the only extra/super long 6 strings Thomann had available. Now I only use those.

One of my basses gets strung exclusively with these half wounds. The rest get Ernie Ball Cobalts or Black Harbor strings.

Being a poor (and cheap) bass player, I'm always on the lookout for long-lasting strings that are not expensive. I use the Elixir Nanoweb strings which sound punchy, bright and clear and do last a lot longer, but they're not cheap. These Nylon tapewounds seem pretty cool, not as bright as I'd like, but the sound should remain consistent for a decent amount of time.

I found the solution years ago to make strings last a long time. Wash hands before playing and wipe the strings and neck when done.

I used D'Addario Chrome flatwounds forever until I found Ernie Ball Cobalt flats. Flat feel with a roundwound/halfwound sound! I'd love to know what you think of the EBs...

@sonojon0

There’s definitely grounding issues when playing nylon strings (instruments may vary) but an easy adjustment of shielding your instrument can help with that a little 🤙🏾

You don't have a PBass and need that sound to do a specific studio gig that requires that with your JBass = half rounds!!...better definition then a flatwound!!...

Interesting comparisons. The tonal differences over time, of course can, be quite ..errr 'Different'. Short term break-in changes. Longer term ageing changes. Much harder to portray in RU-vid video format. Unless one is very Very patient ... 😉

Half Rounds are the worst of both worlds. Lots of drag and buzz but dead. Pressure wounds are better. Those NYXL have a nice snap to them but I prefer the D'Addario nickels.

I've tried nearly all the different D'Addario strings and I can safely say that I simply do not like them. Ernie Balls are similarly priced, and are better in every way.
