Today I am being blunt and discussing the whole "D&D needs to be more inclusive" claims. I am doing this as a live long Dungeons & Dragons player and fan. And I am doing this from the stand point of being a part of numerous D&D gaming group and also playing various games. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

DnD as a game has always been inclusive, as a community it certainly wasn't, managing a game store in the 90's I saw numerous times women treated poorly by men in game stores, simply for being there. Typically it came in the form of quizzing them about things they liked to try to figure out if they were a "true" gamer or "True" fan.

I've been questioned and quizzed by groups as well. I just figure it was to see if I was worth their time. Either way, I could also talk from what I saw over the years and what I've experienced over a 30 year period beginning in the mid 90's. I'm sure if I began in the 70's or 80's I have a slightly different opinion but it would change much because in my experience over the last 30 years has been D&D has been inclusive. I've sat at tables with gays, blacks, lesbians, Hispanics, rich, poor, men and women, all walks of life. My father was a long standing member of my group and he was an amputee. All I'm getting at is things like D&D and Star Trek was really progressive and ahead of its time and people that are coming in with 0 knowledge of the subject is trying to inject their politics and views with force, can just bug off.

@@MightyBjornconsider your self lucky your area was good, many others have had different experiences. You mentioned Star Trek being progressive, I think that’s a great example of how some people will warp media to fit their beliefs. I’ve seen many people online try to use it to argue for fascistic positions or claim it was ‘not political’

@@MightyBjorn It isn't just groups, it is random people in stores and it is aggressive, while they are just looking at a shadowrun book or something. It really seems like there was a lot of guys in the 90s that got enjoyment out of excluding women from the hobby. I absolutely do not see it in stores today, but I don't work in one anymore either. Every single woman gamer that played in the 80s or 90s, that I have talked to has at least one story about how they were made to feel unwelcome.

@@ryanb5127 The was at least some political aspects about Star Trek but there was many progressive ideologies involved with Star Trek. Interesting to think of when the same clowns I was pointing my finger at, says Star Trek wasn't progressive enough.

@@teraxe30 years of TTRPGs while moving around and living in 24 states with most of my free time spent in hundreds of gaming stores in the early to mid 90's and I have never once seen a woman/girl treated any different than any of the guys until this forced inclusivity began. Now people seem worried to have females at the table because they might offend them.

You really nailed it home here. the forced inclusivity needs to stop, because in truth, it was happening naturally. Let alone, gaming is a hobby, what right does WotC or anyone else have to tell anyone what they can or can not do.

Yeah, I agree with everything here. Always thought it was a crazy lie people spread about D&D, becuase my games have always had all kinds of people of different races and sexualities across the lgbtq with little to no problem. Been following a lot of trending topics about D&D over the past few years, and all of it is just absolutely dumb takes meant to just throw salt at people who enjoy the hobby, which is funny becuase it ends up doing just the opposite. Honestly, I don't make gender, race, or sexuality a big deal in my games, even in settings that have that medieval feel, as long as it's not being used in malicious intent towards other people. Also, the Hadooze controversy was the stupidest shit ever that still tickles my ribcages. It's that damn "orcs are black people" arguement all over again. D&D just wanted their own Planet of The Apes race for players to play as in Spelljammer, but because of one dumb picture and their backstory, weither or not it was made intently to be racist, it turned people racist for making them think monkies look like black people all over again. But if you look at the rest of the art, they're very clearly not. How about the red haired one that looks like a Scottish pirate? You gonna tell me that looks like a black man?

Yeah I get what you mean. I was pretty surprised when I first heard about this inclusive bs too. It wasn't mentioned in my video but one of they guy from my first is trans, and he was trans before it was cool. The GM of my 2nd group which was Dragonlance is gay, and one of the guys from the TMNT group I mentioned is Hispanic. He was a really good wrestler and baseball player too. Well just athletic in general but he did wrestling and basketball after school. Heck, we played basketball everyday in the summer time together. I've sat at tables with gays, blacks, lesbians, Hispanics, rich , poor, men and women, all walks of life. My father was a long standing member of my group and he was an amputee. thats like saying you won a lottery so why doesnt everyone. My game has had the same campaign running since 1994. Why doesnt everyone have games that run with the same players, characters, storylines for so long - what do people mean high level play is hard or unbalanced. ours works great? it must be really easy to manage. Not saying my group has had issues - we havent. But some ppl certainly dont have the same experience. Playing lots of sports as a kid, you see the reaction in the 80s some teams had to the idea of having girls on the teams (if it was an option)

There are a few think about this. The pressure isn’t coming from the ‘rainbow brigade’ it’s coming from executives that think it will help them increase the share price. As far as the growing the community, I wish everyone wanted that. It seems willfully ignorant of gatekeepers who harass and push people out. I have so many issues with WotC and but deciding they aren’t going to keep publishing elements that might raise eyebrows is pretty low on the totem pole. I dislike how they are trying to monitize the soul out of the game
@MightyBjorn
@MightyBjorn 6 месяцев назад
If they keep up with this forced inclusivity people we begin to push back. I already see that some people are in some ways, but all it will do is force people and groups to push people out. I also agree with you about WotC finding ways to monetize the soul out of the game.

Sometimes people can be a little too difficult/disruptive for a gaming group. I've experienced this one or twice over my many years, but yes in general terms my group has always been inclusive to everyone. Its the only way the hobby can grow.

I was going to make some arguments but they’re not too important. But for the arguments I was going to make was 1. Gary was sexist 2. Any modable medium is able to be inclusive depending on the people playing with you 3. I agree with the rest of this 4. You have missed a few things but you really hit the hammer on the head with some problems I noticed with WOTC as well with how cowardice they are to upsetting the people who don’t even buy their stuff. I will both agree with you and give you a like as long as I am permitted to play a femboy lizardfolk or a tomboy orc at your table.
@MightyBjorn
@MightyBjorn 6 месяцев назад
I've seen a lot of claims the Gary Gygax was sexist or racist but when you put those statements under a scope, the don't hold up. Example, Why would he hire Tracy & Laura Hickman to head the content creation for Dragonlance. Tracy & Laura worked on other projects but Dragonlance was their main setting. Dragonlance was also the main promoted setting for D&D for many years. Even though Forgotten Realms, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, Spelljammer, and his Greyhawk existed. He hired other people of other races at TSR as well but I'm not going to deep dive this subject. I also do know there is things he has said over the years that can be taken as racist or sexist out of context, but thats just it. Its out of context. Tomboy Orc? Is there any other kind of female Orc? Femboy Lizardman? So you want to play a Frenchman 🤣 Either way I hope you enjoyed the video. I know some of the things I said were unacceptable but I personally have no lover or respect for people that force their agenda onto others.
@teraxe

@@MightyBjorn You do know Tracy Hickman is a white man, right?
@MightyBjorn

Yes but Laura Hickman is Tracy's wife. The only reason I brought Tracy is because it was both Tracy and Laura worked on Dragonlance as well as other D&D related projects for TSR and during a time period Gary Gygax was the head of TSR.

So they rhink that DND should be the way it has from it's inception and you don't like that they want to be the way it always has been?
@MightyBjorn
@MightyBjorn 6 месяцев назад
There is a huge difference between inclusivity happening naturally and forced inclusivity. They don't want inclusivity, it was already there. They want the game dumbed down and catered to. They want things like Orcs removed because racist or whatever. They want any of the stereotypes removed, they want anything that could be sexist removed, and they want pronouns. All because Gary Gygax, JRR Tolkien, Robert E Howard, and various historical mythos is all sexist, racist, or so on. Basically, they don't want D&D, they want to inject their views and destroy what is D&D in the process.

Honestly I don't think people should have to think of their private games as inclusive. Me and the boys ant gonna have NPC's with pronouns or any gay stuff at our table but on the flip if that's at your table I sure as shit ant gonna give ya flak that's the beauty of DnD to me.

I only really played a couple of campaigns, one in 3.5e and one in Starfinder, but these two were enough to show me the sheer difference between the OG 'unadulterated' experience and the 'modern audience' experience. Of all the things that disappoint and anger the most of the wokeness of WotC/Paizo is the effective dumbing down of the concept. The game is no longer 'inclusive' because everyone is truly inherently different as their independent, distinct, own person. They're ravaging, altering things to be 'inclusive' "because we say what is and what isn't, and if you don't accept our way of thinking as your own then we won't let you play".
@MightyBjorn

I don't want to get into the dumbing down the game. D&D 3.5 was great for creativity but the new 5e.... Oh boy
@blazedragongaming5365
@blazedragongaming5365 6 месяцев назад
The problem is these groups want to be called out and have special acknowledgement. But the fact it is a game...anyone can play any game. There has never been anything in DnD to 'excludes' people. There is no need to call out specific groups because it has no place IN dnd. everyone who is not a jerk is welcome at most tables. I've been playing since the 90s with 2e and no one I ever played with cared anything about your ethnicity, gender, religion/spirituality or who you liked to date. NONE of us cared and we all got along from different backgrounds because of our common love of DnD and anyone who expressed interest we instantly nerded out with and shared it with them and invited them to games, regardless of who it was.
