Would've love to see a comparison between the power that the OEM D17A2 cam produces compared to the swapped out D16Y8 cam. Can't wait to see what the horsepower ratings are with it on now.
This motor has alot of miles and burns oil I don't think it would be good for a comparison I'm building a foundation for the turbo and plan to put a built motor when this one goes. Plus dynoing the car all the time ads up
Man your videos are great I watched so many of them and your an absolute genius!! It’s amazing how intelligent you are and amazing at explaining stuff!! So detailed in ur videos keep doing what u do! Only videos I enjoy on RU-vid are ones like these
I was gonna juice up my em2 but for the money spent to get an extra 20-30 horse was just about the price of a k swap so thats the route i went with mine. This is interesting as all hell to see done tho. Very well spoken my friend
Just picked up a clean EM2, been outta the scene for a long while now. Definitely gonna hit you up to build my civic bro, I stay in Chula Vista too. Good content man!
you should make a P&P AEM cam kit to be able to install the D16Y8 rocker assembly for the D17A2. you said u had to shave off some material on the AEM D16y8 cam and keyway in order to fit the D17A2 AEM cam.so would be nice to buy them already shaved and ready to install. great video like always.
I figured that same thing happend to my d17 because it started limping but it turns out after checking everything all I had to do was replace the cam/tdc sensor and its been running fine ever since.
Evey time you work on it and you move around the ac compressor lines(the thick black hose) make sure you tighten the hoses that go into the ac compressor because it will become loose and you'll loose freon
Hey red , so all I need for this conversion is y8 cam with y8 valvetrain and I order a adjustable aem cam gear , also do I got to shave off some like you talked about with yours , your a genius man goodstuff.
Could you use a stock cam gear from the Y8 or is there a difference in the way the censor reads it or difference in diameter between the A2 and the Y8 ?
Are u able to fit a stock cam gear on there? And if so, wht needs to be done to get it on? Or will i need the cam gear and kpro? Cuz i was planning on doing the doctronic ecu
Really good video and idea mate! please tell me that now with this mod the poor d17a2 have a decent VTEC..? I'm planning to do it on a d16v1 its the same right?
Can I do this to a AD17A1 or only the V Tech model or can I just put a v tec head on and what does that take to happen do i have to change the ecu as well 🤔
Hey red, what cam gear housing is that you’re using? Did you get an aem for the d17 then just swap out the center to match the d16 cam? If that’s the case then that’s a $200 investment. Just picked up a y8 manifold and d16y8 cam with the rocker assembly but I’m stumped on what to do about the cam gear. Kpro with the cam gear is $875 from Hondata, then I’ll just have to pick up a separate aem d16 cam gear I suppose?
Hello red i enjoyed watching this as i finally got my 1st civic em2 and came across nothing aftermarket for it I decided same as you to continue the journey but to park the car and use the motor for another project which a cam swap like this stage 3 would be super cool but it is the d17a1. Is this something i can do just with a non vtec cam or will i be in for it having to swap the head to a2 for vtec just to do this thanks in advance
Why did you have to Shave .001ths off the back of the D16 cam gear center? Was it to make sure that it would bring the cam gear it's self closer to the engine or ?
I boosted my JDM D15B VTEC in my EJ8 Civic coupe and it was so much fun. Then once I swapped to a B series it lived on boosted in my buddy's EJ2 for years until he sold it and the douchebag that bought it blew it up intentionally.
Will a tune be needed? I know the vtec crossover can be adjusted using a specific module. I was going to do a stage one Crower cam but they are discontinued.
I'm test fitting this in a spare engine now. I have hondata on my car but with oem pullys sizing up im not seeing why shaving the inner y8 portion is nessisary. Perhaps the offset of the 2 aem parts push the t belt into the relucror ring? I dont have a lathe. If the belt is pushing is The ring I could either shim the reluctor ring back some or shim where the outer and inner meet no?.
I'm also curious what d16 cams will fit before smacking the piston into the valves. The valve reliefs are very shallow on d17 as apost to d16 but perhaps that's because the ste stroke move the pistons further away from the same crank position? Thoughts?
Hello pirate. I want to ask you a question. I have a 7 with a d16v1 very similar to your d17. I have a camshaft and 8 to install. Do I have to install a vafc? Thank you
Whats up red. Question i have the. Zex quiktyme comp cam 59300 for a y8 with a skunk2 pro series cam gear. Would it still work and be the same valve lash with the bigger lobs on comp cam ? Also how long did you run the 3 lobe cam in your car .?
Hey red do you need the k pro ecu to do this swap? And do you need the kpro to install the y8 manifold? Im curious due to im looking to do this all but the k pro is expensive... Any place i could get it cheap? And also lmk about needing it to do these swaps thank you
I would say yes- cos the factory ECU is going to switch the cam profiles at totally the wrong RPM and the fuelling / timing will be way less than ideal with an ecu that is programmed to run a Economy / Normal cam profile as opposed to a Normal / Power profile.
Did you use the rocker arm assembly and cam from a y8? You say d16 in the video, and you use the y8 in another video so I am just assuming the rocker assembly and cam are also from the y8. Hope I am correct.
