As an Irish person this was a pleasant surprise to see you cover this band, I wasn't sure if they were well known outside of the uk but hopefully this will spread awareness of them even more
Just read an article from the BBC written in 2020. This sounds horrible and you should be entitled to put whatever you want on your own mother’s tombstone. My condolences go to you all
I got this phrase tattooed on me for my very first tattoo recently. My Grandparents also emigrated from Dublin to Coventry so it resonated with me deeply.
The thing with skinty fia is it feels almost too cool for me to listen to. I feel like an intruder, like I walked into the wrong venue by mistake but stayed because it sounded so good. It's really just so, so good.
As an Irish younger generation, this album hits home Especially "I Love You" resonates so much with the younger generation, who have been forgotten in the path of our aged government, who only want to line their own pockets.
My favourite line in the album is "about the gall of Fine Gael and the fail of Fianna Fáil". Beautiful wordplay. Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are the two leading political parties in the Republic of Ireland. Both are centre-right parties.
What does being centre-right have to do with it? They are the dominate parties for a reason. They were the parties that pioneered the protection of the Irish language and culture. They were both originally apart of the political party Sinn Féin that won Ireland's freedom. And these parties started as socalist parties that were meant to uplift the lower working class, and disempower the rich. In the past 60 years, Fianna Fail has become more and more corporatist, and overzealously catholic. Since the troubles they have fumbled the ball and are causing more problems than they solved. Thats what I think the lyrics are talking about.
@@shuheihisagi6689 Great comment! Yes I didn't mean anything by it, I always just highlight this to people from two-party countries such as the USA because a lot of people don't understand it's not always left v right, didn't mean anything more than that.
Centre-right according to what? They've created a social welfare state run by an oligopoly of property owners reminiscent of the days of English lords. They'd be socialist in the US, where they are on the scale of left vs right is irrelevant, it's their greed that's the issue. Celtic Tiger trash. But yeah, superb wordplay!
I agree although my favourite line is ‘is their mammy Fine Gael and is there daddy Fianna Fáil’ as that’s the situation I grew up in and it caused more problems than you would expect, especially living in the north of Ireland.
Roman Holiday was my most listened to song this past year; It just scratches that itch perfectly in every way. So excited to see them and AM next October :)
Watched this band two times this year, and gotta tell you the feelings and the intensity you felt in the album grows exponentially hearing them live. Grian's performance in the long verse of I Love You gives you increasing goosebumps with each line, and his body language adds up to a heart wrenching experience. Also seeing Kevin relates to the conceptual side of this album bringing up the story about his Irish friend, is exactly what this album is about, the people that needs to leave Ireland for the terrible conditions and feel uncomfortable in another country like the deer on the cover. I love the album, I love the band and also love this channel for creating such unique listening experiences.
@@olbrue you could say that. I think the vocals are elongated and dragged out to show the emotion grian has behind the lyrics. How he gave his all. Such a beautiful song. I think the way it’s delivered is essential to being that.
I'm Mexican but in a way I've always found out similarities between the struggles or the "meaning" of being Mexican and Irish. But in this album I found it very tangible with the trials and tribulations of living in the country that has a lot of responsibility of the situation in your country. Love this album
I love Fontaines D.C, I had the privilege of seeing them in 2019 at a small event for just 50 people and free in Mexico City when they were not yet known and they had released their first album Dogrel, one of the most memorable moments of my life, and that same year they exploded appearing at several big events, definitely great talent and music.
Being from Ireland it’s so cool to hear these stories from your dad and his love for this music and culture. Really really interesting stories love how music can convey such memories and thoughts
This episode was deadly. Loved the chat about the old friends that stayed. It's such an Irish thing to start chatting about a memory that is sparked by music or a line and it's mad to think that Fontaines music does that to people in Canada. Also "There's always fucking rain and it's alway dark" is the hardest line on the album.
As a Northern Irish man who moved to Canada I loved the discussion in between the songs on this. Fontaines might be the best Irish band ever for my money
Being from dublin myself i clicked on this so fast and had such a great time just watching yous experience it glad yous enjoyed probably my favourite episode so far now gerrrup lads
You guys should listen to their album Dogrel from 2019, if you want more spoken word and the Dublin accent you'll get it from there. A brilliant album with some great lyrics. Shout out to the Yard Act album in the background btw, I'd love to hear your reactions to that one too
Y'all gotta go back to Dogrel, my GOD what an album. I saw them open with that album for IDLES' Joy as an Act of Resistance tour. Best concert of my life.
Man I love Fontaines DC, they're amazing live!! Saw them at Electric Picnic with Arctic Monkeys and Tame Impala :) Makes me even more proud to be Irish!!
I'm from Dublin Love this band so much that they were formed in Dublin. Deego and Tom are from Co. Mayo. Curleys from Co Monaghan (coolest looking man in rock) Grian and Carlos are Dubs. Carlos has lived in Spain when younger
Me too. Very convoluted way I got in to them. I was aware of the name but never heard them. My team bought a player from Bohs, so looked at that team. Saw and bought that beauty from a year or so ago with the bands name emblazoned on the front, so delved in and absolutely loved what I heard. Bought rhe back catalogue, caught them on the Glasto coverage and got tickets for one of their Manchester shows earlier this year. Absolutely astonishing band. My favourite new band for a while. Just wish I'd looked them up earlier. In retrospect, their debut album is one of the finest I've heard for ages, really set the tone for what they've rapidly become. A very important band.
The bastard walks by verse in I Love You is one of the best verses every written in musical history, in my opinion. So well thought out and packed full of punchy, hard to swallow meaningful poetry
I was lucky enough to get to see them live here in the states! They were on tour with the Arctic Monkeys last year when they came to Portland! An absolutely magic night for both!
As someone from Dublin I'm so happy to see fontaines being covered and reviewed by you guys across the way, also a great first introduction to your channel, will definitely be checking more of you guys out you both seem great!
saw fontaines the other week. one of the greatest bands of this generation. i love you is an amazing song. the feeling it gives and the passion is indescribable
GYUPP THE CUZ IRELAND ALL THE WAY 🇮🇪 Always loved a heroes death and dogrel but I haven’t given this a proper listen yet. I love how he sings with his accent. It’s genuinely so cool to see Irish culture being recognised. Especially liked the first track being written in Gaelic
@@seanodonoghue116 are you thick in the skull lad. There are other forms of gaeilge that aren’t Scottish. Irish is almost always referred to as gaeilge. I mean why do you think Irish speaking areas are called gaeltachts?
@@seanodonoghue116 sorry I’m in the field working and tired asf. I’m a bit on edge 😂 I’m studying for my cbas atm and I can’t get “aimsir chaite” and “higher level gaeilge” out of my head 😂.
Do Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago"! Curious how your dad will like the soft acoustic intimate sound as opposed to the more robotic feel of 22, A Million. He mentioned in that video that he found Justin Vernons raw vocals powerful, and that album essentially rests on his vocals and guitar.
Thank you for opening this band to me! Stumbled upon your Radiohead reactions and became a follower. Can't get enough of this album, not a single song to skip, everything is in it's right place 😌
That story after the second song is really touching, having grown up around the same time as Conor it makes me so sad to know that people were segregated so hard by their religion and still are to this day in the North,
I've seen Fontaines DC live 3 times this year in Copenhagen and London (Finsbury Park & Hammersmith Apollo) and will definitely be going again! If you think the album is great, they take it next level live - the atmosphere is completely electric no matter the size of the crowd, if you're in a hall or festival in a park.
So cool that your da has a great understanding of Ireland. His experiences with people from across the world have made him into the coool cultured man he is
So great to see you covering probably Ireland's best band right now. The scene pretty much died over the years, and though there are a few bands around that aren't getting the recognition they deserve, these guys are blowing up. Never thought they'd get on this show though. Appreciate it!
Saw them November at Apollo Hammersmith, unfortunately upstairs 🙁 but from teen to pensioner e v e r y o n e knew the words and sang along you could hear the swell of voices in quieter moments can't get enough of them ❤️🔥
Gotta see these guys live before they undoubtedly end up filling arenas because I prefer smaller, more intimate venues. Excited to catch them next year. Oasis reunion, Fontaines DC, Morrissey, Marr, Chameleons and hopefully more. Thank for the reaction!,
Thank you for your videos! It's really becoming my favorite content on the platform and a great way to discover new albums. Btw, I believe Big Thief would be a nice discovery for Kevin!
very underrated album, glad to see you branching out to more genres too! cool seeing the kurt vile vinyl too been getting into him recently and would love to see you do him at some point
Thanks for doing this Connor and Kev. I’m no where near Dublin City being from rural cork, but Fontaines are pure unreal. First heard about then when I was around ten from boys in the better land being a big hit here. I’m a tad older now and they’re a band I’ll always have a great time listening to. I think ye should listen to the makaveli album next. Class album
Yes, one of the best albums to come out of 2022… if not the last 5 years. Got to see these guys front row in September… talk about some intimidating lads! I’ve never been so excited and scared at the same time. Ian’s staring has no competition lol. I’m drawn to music with attitude- and these guys have IT! Great to see you pick this!!! 👍🏻
You and your dad should React Neutral Milk Hotel next. I know, I'm a filthy hipster virgin. On the other hand I've found a new band thanks to you guys once again. Keep em' coming friends.
Yesss damn so happy you're doing this. One of my favourite new bands along with black country new road. They're so Irish. I love the feeling of their music. The poetry, everything. I don't belong from their previous album is probably my favourite song I discovered last year
Still keep coming back to this video. I see that Yard Act record behind you. Would be cool for you to listen to “Where’s my utopia”. Also think dad would love Idles, specially JOY and Crawler
I think you guys would enjoy reacting to Interpol's debut album "Turn on the Bright Lights" if you haven't heard it already. I feel like Fontaines take some inspiration from them. TOTBL is a timeless classic with an AMAZING rhythm section.
Great reaction to an underrated album. Checking your channel to see if you've reacted to Grian's solo album. If not you totally should. It's brilliant!
I've seen them live and met them a few times and they were hands down the best gigs I've ever been to. After working for their gig the first time it was so good I had to buy tickets to go see them again. Album of the year 2022 for surre
So nice to see this album land on the channel, ‘I love you’ live in the iveagh gardens in Dublin last summer was something else. Continue to dive into there music lads and thank you for your story’s Kevin it’s clear the music struck some memories
