Today, january 30th, 2024, Jan de Rooy has died. First garnering attention in Rallycross, then by driving DAF trucks through the African Desert. The Suitcase, The Bull, Two Headed Monster, Turbo Twin 1 and 2 . Thank you for colouring the youth of an eight year old snot nosed boy. Will always remember that hideously fast truck barreling through the Sahara. RIP. Suddenly the music of this video fits unexpectedly well :(
One can only speculate what was going through Vatanen's mind when he looked to his left and saw that daf overtaking him, at 200+ kph. Must've been something like MFG! Best Dakar footage ever!
Best rally truck ever made, untill the 2nd truck made a devasting high speed crash. After that they started to change regulation and rules to reduce power and speed. 80s saw some of the best and fastes cars ever made, remember Prototype C le Mans , Group B rally, F1 turbo era. 80s what a era that was :-)
So this was uploaded in 2006, home digital video editing wasn't really a thing yet if I'm not mistaken. Meaning this whole video was done completely by hand. They were recording individual segments from VCR tapes then adding music in at the end. Finally converting it to digital and uploading it. Bravo, new favorite video on YT.
Do you really think? In the late nineties I already did full digital video editing. Using a Fast AV Master 2000 card to capture analog video from my Panasonic MS1 S-VHS camera and other analog video sources. It was a great capture card. In 1998 this setup was complemented with digital footage from Canon Optura MV1. Superb quality in bright light but low light performance was terrible.
The good old 80's, whether it was world rallying, F1, rally raids... "F*** safety, just make it as light and as powerful as possible, and let's go racing!"
The risk of racing; you might get injured or get killed. All the great things we have now, is because there were men and women brave enough to test them, regardless of their own safety. Think of airplanes and so on... So please continue to push the boundaries!
I can't stop watching this video, man. It's the first time I've ever seen an automotive video on RU-vid with music that actually fit. The clips fit together so well...awesome job.
The driver who died in from the DAF team, was already warned by Jan the Rooy. That driver was ranked on the first place while driving his first rally. And faster then Jan, who is the most experienced driver. Jan said that the truck was gaining momentum (jumping) above a specified speed, because of lots of small but high wobbles in that part of the track. I think he also regrets it that he didn't warn enough.
I was a huge fan of the rally, and living literally a few miles from the Dutch DAF complex, these trucks were ever so often seen. They were beasts since The Bull in 1985 won.
In the accident of the video one member of De Rooy's tripulation was dead an he took the decision of not take part in the Dakar anymore. However he returned to the rally in 2002 with his son and with DAF also.
Wondreful Video i grew up with Offroad driving in Norway and been watching the Dakar since early 2000`s and watching it again this year just brings me back to the insanity of the 1980`s and the Magnificent DAF Trucks. Jan De Rooy is Total legend of Motorsport. RIP Kees Van Loevez Co driver DAF X2 1988
Yes, when one realized that the car itself was a monster specially developed to win the Paris-Dakar, driven by WRC champion Ari Vatanen no less, the truck overtaking it looks out-of-this-world unbelievable. I can only imagine what Vatanen was thinking being overtaken by that truck. Probably "Am I dreaming?" He probably also learned what the the driver of the car in Spielberg's debut movie "Duel" (1971) felt like not being able to lose a truck that goes faster and faster...
Tudo a ver.
1200HP with Alu spaceframe. Speed at that moment aprox 185km/h. Topspeed +/-205-210km/h. Jan wanted to continu the race but The DAF-president stopped them.
@MartinVDB1984 ....just like Brabham's infamous "fanmobile" -BT46B- after winning the 1978 F1 Swedidsh Grand Prix from the outright -it was banned from racing on "safety grounds" as other racers complained of being "showered" by gravel/sand-
It is about driving skills. Thats right that DAF turbo twin was probably the best truck in dakar history, but if De Rooy drove the same Tatra as Loprais, he wouldn´t be as good as he was
Warner shouldn't be whining about 'their' music being used for such a great clip! if it wasn't for the fact that i already bought the two albums from DM that are featured, i would download them just to get even!!!
I'm hoping someone can help me here, when I was a child i used to watch a film of some sort that shown the same type of rally truck in a rave with lots more trucks like it racing around a beach it must of been early 2000s or late 90s
Does anyone know what caused the crash seen near the end??? I know it was someone named van Loevezijn that was killed but there doesnt seem to be much info around on the crash. Jan de Rooy seemed upset at the end though :(
He was disqualiqied before the start of dakar because of a stupid reason. The organisation said that there was somthing wrong with the homologation (don't know if it's correct translated). Simply said, the organisation said that there was a problem with the papers/administration
