Dahlia tuber clumps are delicate and necks are often broken. Are these tubers viable? Traditionally they are snipped off and discarded. But here we do a test to show once and for all if they are viable.

Good experiment thanks for posting. It will be interesting to see if they do sprout, whether you decide to take cuttings or plant the tuber. I look forward to the conclusion!

Я даже не знала, что такие можно проращивать. Просто выкидывала. Благодарю!

I can't wait to see the outcome, it's such a disappointment when tubers arrive in poor condition, I had some just like that this year from a well known on-line company, I guess they are tricky to transport. Fingers crossed!

Hi Ingrid, I don't think Hall's would send tubers like this out! These were wholesale so we just have to accept it. I'm glad people are interested enough to watch and comment though. I wish you luck this season.

@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers I'm going to try an experiment this year with my pot tubers. Normally after taking the best of the cuttings I discard the pot tuber. However this year, after taking the cuttings I'm I'm going to try planting and nurturing the tuber, not so much for prime blooms, but just to see if the pot tuber will form new tuber growth which can be then harvested and stored over the winter for new plants next year. Pot tubers are so expensive now (nearly £9) and it would be great if I could make the most of them. I wonder if you have tried this and what was the outcome?

Hi Ingrid. I have not tried this, but I wonder if you have thought of making your own pot tubers by just keeping a cutting in a small pot during the growing season. This is how pot tubers are produced! Just be careful to water it enough as it will dry out quickly with little soil in the pot. I will be trying this method myself this year.

@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Maybe I'll try pot tubers, thanks for this advice. Last summer I crossbred several varieties and managed to collected hundreds of seeds, they germinated well and I've stacks of strong seedlings in the greenhouse, I hope that I get one or two 'keepers'. I'll report back later in the year.

Oh well done Ingrid! It's great fun seeing what you get at the end of all the effort, a hobby in itself. You might just get the Next Big Thing. I will be interested to hear how it goes.

I don’t see how those fibres can convey any energy from the tubers to the eyes. However, I would like to be amazed so I will watch with great interest! Bit of a game changer if it works. If it does, will the plant be as strong and healthy as those that have a more easily nourished start? Thanks for conducting the experiment.

Hi Jan, yes my instinct matches yours, and I am making no predictions. But I could find no studies on this. I think the fibres are composed of Xylem and Phloem with their support tissue, and this got me thinking that they may indeed function. I agree the plants are likely to be "behind" their undamaged siblings. We will see! And thanks for your interest and support.
