DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is the latest controversial Netflix Mini Series. There have been many questions surrounding who this show was even made for, and or why it was made at all. Anytime we are dealing with content as heartbreaking and vile as this, trust that it wont be for everyone. I do want to say I personally believe the controversy and some of the criticisms are warranted, but purely from an artistic standpoint the show is quite impressive. I don't say this lightly, but maybe this one is worth watching. Or maybe its not. Stick around to her my thoughts on Who should even watch DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

I read a book on Dahmer 25 years ago. The Netflix series didn’t even scratch the surface on what he actually did. This is a fantastic watch, but it’s time to stop giving this monster a spotlight.

I think a lot was left to interpretation in the mini series and maybe that's for the best. The fact they went in as in depth as they did was gruesome enough. And I totally agree. I'd be perfectly fine if we could just forget about this dude now. ✊🏾

I appreciate how much consideration you gave such a heavy and hurtful topic. I have watched numerous documentaries about Dahmer and cannot stomach watching a dramatization of the murders. I am so glad that you addressed a topic that was underpinning these murders, which were targeting of non-white non-heterosexual people by Dahmer. Also I am thankful that you brought to light that the police did not listen to cries for help from communities of people with melanin, nor did they help Dahmer's victims because they were not white or hetero-normative. For me, these are some of the most important aspects of the Dahmer murders, as much as Dahmers actions. Another layer I would like to add is that the genocidal nature of the colonizers of this country committed the exact same acts as Dahmer, starting with Cristobal Colon (aka Christopher Columbus) as early as 1492. I feel it is important to acknowledge that Dahmer's actions and attitudes towards non-white non-hetero-normative people is a continuation of colonial genocide.

It was definitely a tough watch. The idea of acting out these grisly events in such detail is as morbid as it gets. However, I definitely appreciated the filmmakers for touching on the underlying racial discrimination. To your point, this was probably the most important aspect of this series aside from maybe giving voices to the victims. We learn a lot about them and I thought that was a nice touch. I can also talk about the cinematography and acting, but none of that would've mattered if the show wasn't really saying anything else. And the systemic racism and discrimination we ethnic minorities have, and continue to face, is all an extention of what you speak of, genocide at the hands of the colonizers. All of the re-written history, superiority complexities, and violence within this country can be traced back to 1492. And to correlate that to an individual like Dahmer makes total sense. Someone who can literally be as vile as he wants for years with seemingly no repercussions, mainly because of who his victims were. Shit is wild. Thanks brother for the support and words as always. Love your thoughts.✊🏾

I appreciated your nuanced take on this series. You acknowledged the show's merits but didn't brush aside the controversies and criticisms. While I enjoy some true crime content like Mindhunter, I've avoided this series. Mainly cause I wasn't really interested in watching a Dahmer series in the first place but also because of the controversies and reactions from the victims' families that the series invoked. I did wish the series handled this subject matter more sensitively and actually approached the families of the victims. I can definitely see how someone could view the series as exploitation. Still appreciated the more favorable take you had on the series, even if not everyone will agree with it.

Thank you for this. I understand anytime something this vulgar and heartbreaking is based in reality can be a lot to ask a viewer to sit through. Especially something about such a heinous and evil individual. Mentioning the criticism I felt was necessary if I was going to talk about this because most of the critiques are valid and I felt it would be disrespectful to simply cast them aside. The way I had to look at it was like being a fan of horror we are often time subjected to ideas and concepts that in some way, shape or form stem from somebodies reality or trauma. Most of this type of stuff is based from something evil or crazy. For example, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, even stuff like the Exorcist etc are all born from real trauma. Now most of the times these things are heavily fictionalized and altered to where its not as obvious as something like a Mindhunter or in this case, the Dahmer series. Mindhunter hit harder than any slasher or fictionalized horror movie to me despite it being less violent and or graphic simply because I knew these were real people and victims. This could explain why it too, got some backlash when it came out. It was just too real and too harrowing and Its the same thing with this series. While its honestly less violent than half the stuff out there, its still somehow worse, if that makes sense. Anyone who chooses to sit this out, will get no shame from me! ✊🏾

The pilot and a few episodes were directed by Carl Franklin who is a really under appreciated filmmaker. He did devil in a blue dress a fantastic neo noir about a private investigator starring Denzel and Don Cheadle. He always brings craft even to a kinda gross series like this.

I actually didn't know that. I'm familiar with his work and that movie, but didn't know he worked on this as well. Could be why it was so good. Thanks for pointing that out! 🙌🏾

Great, balanced review. I think my Wife and I might see a documentary first before I ever dive into this. Thanks for all the great work!

Yeah I mean this is something you'd only watch for the technical filmaking aspects and acting. The story and history behind it is repugnant obviously and not easy to digest. A documentary could be a great way to go, but that may even feel more real than this show does. 😬 Thanks as always brother for the support. 🙏🏾
