In this episode, we will teach you the technique of splashed ink lotus painting. Even if you don't have professional painting tools on hand, you can use watercolor paper and black pigments as substitutes. This content will give you a glimpse into Zhang Daqian's splashed ink technique. Zhang Daqian, a master of modern Chinese ink painting, transformed traditional ink painting from realism to abstraction, becoming a pioneer in modern ink art. His works have even surpassed Picasso's in auction markets, making him an outstanding representative artist.
Let's dive into our lesson now! In terms of tools, we're using semi-ripe Xuan paper from China. If you're a Western viewer, you can also try using watercolor paper to achieve similar effects. Unlike the typical splashed ink method used in landscape painting, when painting lotus flowers, we need to reverse the steps. We'll paint the lotus flowers first and then apply the splashed ink. This round of splashing focuses mainly on embellishing elements. For the foreground, we'll use concentrated ink to express the lotus flowers with bold brushwork, especially for the leaves. The key here is to apply calligraphic strokes to the lotus leaves; in Chinese painting, incorporating calligraphy into brushwork enhances the artistic atmosphere.
For the middle and background lotus leaves, we'll use light ink to create a sense of space in the composition. At this stage, you can add more water to transform expressive brushwork into a semi-splashed ink texture. This method combines the expressive characteristics of brushwork with the ambiance of splashed ink, resulting in a more commanding effect.
Once the first layer of ink has dried, we can use it as the base for splashed ink. We'll decide where to apply colored splashes on the concentrated ink lotus leaves. In this step, we'll start by applying a layer of clear water, followed by a small amount of stone blue and stone green splashes. These colors will interact with the black ink, and flower blue will be used as an intermediate shade.
This painting technique is inspired by Zhang Daqian's mastery of splashed ink. We hope you'll enjoy the unique joy of painting through this process. Wishing you a wonderful creative journey! If you have any questions during your learning, please feel free to leave a comment or contact us via email. We'll be more than happy to address your inquiries. Once again, thank you for your support and participation!
