how is a lunch box locker on the road? www.treadwright.com/?afmc=f6 My vlog channel • Video my email ronleggett94@gmail.com add me on snap chat cherokee ronnie my insta cherokee.ronnie m. profile.php?id...
I had a Cherokee Dana 30 one piece axle, with a Spartan locker in my. 91 YJ. It always felt locked. At the gas station, the tires would squeal. I wore my front tires, balder than my head. I went back to the two piece disconnecting axle. Made my own cable disconnect.
I have a jeep ('47 CJ2A) with a Dana 44 with a Detroit locker in the rear and a "Lock Rite" (Lunch box) locker in a Dana 30 in the front.. I disconnect the locking hubs and "No Prob!
dana 30 on 35s. 4.10 gears. I dont do anything remotely near MOAB. Worst id ever do is Danial trail in Uwharrie OHV. considering locking the front. yay or nay?
I would guess that pull is from torque steer, caused by different length axle shafts. Used to be a common problem on front wheel drives. Manufacturers put a lot of effort into eliminating that problem.
I bought my old Landcruiser with a Lokka pre-installed in the rear diff. Only real downside is that the free movement (required by design) between the cam gears and centre pin adds a whole lot of extra backlash to a drivetrain that is already pretty loose, so the rear axle can bang and hop around if you're not gentle at slow speeds. Just gotta learn to adjust your driving style to work around it.
yes for sure i was little worried but now that i have run it its not as loud as the aussie locker don't know why but its built little bigger to feels heavier to
cherokee ronnie That is why I went with the Spartan over the Aussie. I didn't have to mess with thrush washers. the Spartan comes with a better center pin from what I've read. and the springs and pins are in closed in the locker. Aussie lockers pins and springs looked exposed. I'm happy with how heavy built it is too
Hay Ronnie, You got a Great Channel Man. I continue to run into the Discussion with Guys that Know it All and I for One have been working on My Jeeps my self, I also have been a Mechanic all my Life. I Like to roam around on Channels because sometimes you learn something New and or a completely different way to do some things than the way you have been doing them. But Anyway I had a Guy with a Nice 99 Cherokee Sport Just like Mine he had a Locker of some Kind In the Front. As we were Talking about Cherokees he Said he was Going that Next Day and was Going to Put a Lunch Box in the Rear I ask what Brand and he was not sure as of Yet. I mentioned to him that I have the Same Rear end as Him, Both his and Mine are Chrysler Corporate 8.25 rear Axles with the Original Track-Lok. Now the discussion was, What I have Only Read some where, That a Lunch Box Will not Fit in a Corporate 8.25 rear end Housing That supports a Track-Lock BUT a Lunch Box WILL Fit in a Corporate 8.25 IF the Housing is and OPEN rear end. So My Question to you Will a Lunch Box Work in Ether Corporate 8.25 Rear end?. Thanks have a Great Day. God Bless America and God Bless the Disabled Veterans Of America.
I've never had any problems with my locker in the front once in a blue moon when I press hard on the brakes it'll jerk to the left but that's only happened 3 times and I've had my Jeep for a year.
There are definitely different tolerance levels for different people.. and different ages. 10 years ago I daily drove a mustang with a spooled rear end and exhaust loud enough to wake dead people... Now after owning a rubicon (and going back to an XJ), I'm struggling with the lunchbox vs spending money for fancy pants activated lockers...
I have a Detroit locker in the rear of my 85 Toyota with a stock 4 banger and if I give too much throttle in a turn, the back end washes out with 33X12.50s. This is dry pavement during a California summer.
Yep that's what those lockers will do when you get a bit to heavy with the skinny pedal. My 98 Grand Cherokee has the factory trac-lok rear axle, does great in snow/ice just gotta remember its there and not be to hard on the throttle, it'll go sideways on you quite quickly if you aren't paying attention LOL...my Jeep also has the selec-trac 4WD system so I have full time and part time 4WD modes, and in full time 4WD which gives a slight advantage of torque to the rear axle it'll get sideways pretty easily too with a 48/52 torque split front/rear just that little bit of torque difference will get it sideways with too much go pedal, but driving normally it goes great, it was a great feature that the dealer I got it from had no idea what the vehicle was equipped with, they sold it as a Laredo but its the Laredo SE so practically a Limited Edition with a few extra non-visible drive train features they had no idea about LOL.
@@wildbill23c I purchased an 89 Laredo with the Selec-Trac 4WD. Debated putting a locker in the Dana 35 rear. Appreciate your comment and experience. I prefer limited slips in my 4WD trucks. Just got to decide which locker to get. Thanks again.
@@DLTJR1959 A selectable locker would be great, but yeah a limited slip is good too. I miss my Jeep in the winter because of the the selec-trac and rear limited slip.
if your on black top your not in four wheel drive ( auto hubs will still turn the differential drivetrain engaging the lunch box ) .......so manual locking hubs would remove that issue ......auto hubs will cause the locker to wanna engage because the front wheels will be resisting each other
davetaf1323 The locker only locks when torque is applied via the driveshaft. Sure the teeth of the locker will line up while in 2wd but they will slip over each other and wont "lock up" like it would in 4wd. It would definitely make a difference on snowy or icy roads but not on pavement.
I have a 1997,ZJ I have a chance to get an Aussie locker for my rear Dana 35, Its brand new, can get it dirt cheap, my Jeep is my daily driver, some days I drive 100 miles for work, any thoughts?
I ordered spartan locker for xj 98 c8.25 29 spline i will receive it tomorrow and i live in california what def oil do you recommend ? I asked in auto zone and the guy said use 80w90 lg5 with trans-X posi track oil what do you think about that? I use 32” tiers with 4.5” lift whet stock gear ratio 3.55 you think is it worth it to re gear to 4.10 ? I appreciate your response
Good to hear that your digging the lockers. Loved that intro, really was cool. Keep up the good work and with the premium videos that you put out. Keep on keeping on bro. OlllllllO
Brett how is it on the highway? I live in the city and like to go out in the bush on The weekends and im looking for my first auto locker. Would be i The rear.
Since he didn't reply, I will. I just installed a Powertrax No Slip, in my 90s k2500, this last Saturday. I'm surprised. I don't hear any clicking or clanking besides what my truck already does. Strangely, I can do burnouts now at 1/4 to 3/8 throttle. With open diff, I could barely spin one tire, at 3/4 throttle. On the highway isn't bad. If you are on the gas hard you can feel the truck want to go in a straight line. A faint shake. But that's if im hard on the gas. other wise it's like driving with an open diff. Highway is fine, backing up is fine. That's with the powertrax no slip in a 90s k2500. Don't know how the others would do. But i'm pleased with it
I have a 2wd ⁴cyl I'm thinking of putting a lunch box in. Mostly for driving on field roads when I'm out trapping. I'm a little concerned about using it in the snow but I drive in snow over 1/2 the year and with the low hp of my 2.3L motor I think it will be ok. If not I'll just remove it in the winter. What's your thoughts.
Hi. I installed a Spartan Locker and a solid Cherokee axle in my 91 YJ. Even in 2 wheel drive. When turning. The tires squeal as if they were locked. It works great off road. But is it normally to squeal the tires. I'm eating tires
In 2WD the front axle locker should ratchet as the outside tire rotates faster than the inside. Only applying torque to the differential should engage the locker. If you are in 2WD and your front tires squeal or slide/scuff, your lunchbox locker is not functioning correctly.
Cora an employee from TorqMaster (company that makes Aussie Lockers) clarified to me that you need either Selectable Transfer case with RWD option, or Unlocking front hubs to run an automatic front locker. You do not need both. Since unlocking the hubs or having vehicle in RWD will not have power put towards the front wheels it will stay disengaged. Currently running front and rear auto lockers on my WJ Grand Cherokee with selec-trac 242hd. No issues daily driven, front axle never locks up until i put it into 4hi or 4lo. Just wanted to clarify for people considering a front auto-locker for their vehicles.
I daily lunchbox locker front and rear with a 4.6 stroker ax15 cherokee. It’s not horrible but it’s pretty uncomfortable lol. But hey I’m the only one out in a snow storm lol
Just installed a powertrax no slip in my 90 k2500. I don't know it's there unless I half throttle the gas in a turn. Mine doesn't click or clank at all. I got lucky or maybe Powertrax No slip better. Oh and i can light the back tires up easily now. With open diff it struggled to burn one tire at 3/4 throttle. No i can burn both at 1/4 to 3/8 throttle. Do know how that works
Kristopher mathis Aussie has smaller pins and sets in groves spartan had bigger pins and sets in holes I think spartan is pretty tough and quiet Aussie is kinda loud
only if you are in 4x4 or have full time 4x4. if your T-case is working like it should and you are in 2wd you will never notice that locker other than clicking
ang93NA **Holy sh!t, mine is stock but I have most everything to finish it. I used a calculator and with only 89 octane I get 19.127mpg. 87 oc it's absolutely horrible and on 91 oc it's about 17. That's the only grades we have for fuel at typical pumps here in Oregon.
ang93NA **You're exactly correct, but I always try different grades to see how the vehicle works. I've owned 42 vehicles and they all have acted differently. The Jeep only gets 89 octane and the new Jetta Sport Wagon gets the same fuel. Always run better and the usual 10 cent price difference totally makes up for it. My girlfriend was driving the Jeep and forgot and just said fill it on accident (it's illegal to pump your own gas in Oregon) and when I drove it next I instantly knew. You just have to drive it drive 15 miles after the gas light comes on, or how gutsy you are to get the other fuel out and just try it once. The price difference is just minimal. I drove mine about 40 miles with the light on all 3 times when I checked it, but I'm not recommending you go that far.

Pulling to the right wouldn't be caused by the the locker. Check your joints, alignment, bushings or tires. Or if the swaybar isn't connected that could be it.
motorgarage 21 this one here just has a side pipe for not but my daily I run straight no cat or muffler and it sounds great off road when you hammer on it
And The reason you are feeling it pull to the right is what ther fwd crowd calls torque steer. The shorter axle shaft side (driver side) will always be dominate to the passenger side(long axle shaft side).
I have a jeep cherokee, model 1987, with 2,1 td engine made by Renault, in front Dana 30 with vacuum desconnect and in rear Dana 35. Tell me, please, what locker should i put on my Dana 30 ? Lunch box, aussie, Spartan etc? Does it require any modifications? Because i don't want to spend too much money.
Caden Loza **No I think he's out East. He said before but I don't recall. Where in Oregon are you? Trying to get a XJ group meet together. I'm up in Washington County Oregon.
auto-locker IN the Front axle with a part-time tcase in 2wd drive mode will make absolutely No difference than driving with driving with an open diff. Unless you've installed something terribly wrong, which by the sounds of the "Info" you're putting out could very well be the case.
i wouldn't think so, but what about axles that are always engaged? Not talking transfercase, im talking no unlocking hubs or center axle disconnect that most modern 4x4's have today. In a always engaged axle, i wonder how it acts.
@@DesertRider250r He's not talking about the transfer case he is talking about how you can't unlock front Cherokee hubs so the diff is always spinning where on a lot of more heavy duty trucks you could get out and unlock the front hubs so the front drivetrain isn't doing anything when driving
If you're running auto hubs you'll feel it while you're in 2wd. If you're running manual hubs you won't feel it at all in 2wd because the only thing spinning with manual hubs while in 2wd is the tires. Manual hubs totally disconnect from the axle. Automatic hubs on the other hand spin the axle, ring gear, front drive shaft. I had one of these in the front of my 77 Chevy. I have manual hubs and I didn't feel it at all when It was in 2wd. It didn't Last long it exploded and wrecked my whole front axle. It probably ok in a light vehicle though. I only used it like 3 times it was in there when I bought the truck so idk what brand it was. After that I wouldn't use these things. When it broke I was doing about 25 on the street in the snow & ice. It broke into peices and cracked my front axle housing.
there is no locking, aka pulling, when the 4wd is not engaged, aka, sending power to the front wheels. with an auto locker, it only locks when power is applied to the gear set.
modified jeeps rule. nine's a jku with a spooled d44 in the rear ann a spartan up front.i removed two sway bar links and deactivated the stupid traction control.it's a newer model that drives like the old more comfortable ones did. jeep needs to get their snit together. people are paying way too much for a jeep that won' t even spin a wheel lllllol.
