Catch Noah feeding, changing water & bedding, and not so successfully wrangling quail in the spare bedroom.
In order for quail to lay eggs in the winter months, you need heat & sunlight. Therefore, that room stays at a constant 75 degrees, and we keep artificial light on them for 12 hours a day. That's why Noah's sweating!!!

Unfortunately for the birds, your mistake is a common one. You are using the dietary requirements of chickens-but quails are not chickens. They are game birds and therefore need a much higher protein percent in their diet. 30% protein from hatching till first egg is laid. Reduce the protein then to 24%-27% and raise calcium in order to avoid bound egg problems. Your birds are malnourished and not getting the best start on life that they could be. If you don’t want to get the standard Game Bird Starter feed then increase their protein intake with additions. Next, heat is not required for forced egg laying, just light. Fourteen hours is all it takes. A string of Christmas lights is enough; no spotlight. Think soft like sunrise and sunset to start and end days with. There are a lot of good poultry forums out there you should check out before making more videos like this. Your birds will be happier, healthier and so will the birds of others trying to learn from you. Love the HT hutches! Cheers and good luck!

Thank you so much for the advice!! This was filmed months ago, so we’ve made many adjustments for their nourishment and happiness since. We’ve switched to game bird feed, and put them in an open run instead of the hatching time cages. We haven’t done a quail update for a long time since we’ve moved twice and had many many things going on, but an update is coming!! We definitely appreciate your advice and will implement it next hatch!!

How is the odor having them inside?

We no longer have them indoors. To keep any smells down, we did clean them very regularly and it was fine.
