The Daimler Sovereign was a truly prestigious motor car built using the 4.2 litre six cylinder Jaguar engine, available with either manual overdrive transmission or Borg Warner Model 8 Automatic gearbox, and standard equipment included Varamatic varying ratio power steering, heated rear window, electric clock, Girling servo assisted disc brakes on all wheels and fully independent suspension.

The Daimler is a very underrated classic car compared to its Jaguar cousin’s. Considering that a good example of a Jaguar MK2 in Australia is AUD $60k to $100k, and the equivalent Daimler, with its wonderful 2.5lt V8 is about $25k to $40k. I only subscribe to four car channels, all classic cars, all in the UK, and yours is definitely one of them.

The character of that instrument panel is exquisite. Would it be incorrect to call the Daimler a Jaguar at all? In the US during the 50’s, there was a car known as the Continental Mark II. Commonly referred to as a Lincoln as it was built by Lincoln, but Continental was formally the make. Does this arrangement apply to a Daimler as well.

They were both built by Jaguar cars. The Daimler was a badge-engineered variant of the Jaguar Sovereign V12 with some slight differences - trim, seating style, chrome mouldings, wheels etc.

The Daimler Motor car company was sold off by BSA in 1960, along with Lanchester Cars. Jaguar bought them, as their Browns Lane site was short of build space. One thing William Lyons did was axe the 4.5 litre Edward Turner V8 as used in the Majestic Major, this engine would have been ideal for the Daimler Sovereign, but it would have shamed the 4.3 Jag XK unit as in this puppy. He did however oversee the B and C spec SP250s so we have him to thank for that, he killed off the Dart in 1964 as it competed with the E type (XKE).
